Description: The number of emitted photons that can be obtained from a fluorophore increases with the incident light intensity and the duration of illumination. Ultraviolet imaging of hydrogen flames

Description: We have assembled an ultraviolet-sensitive intensified camera for observing hydrogen combustion by imaging the OH, A/sup 2/..sigma.. - X/sup 2//Pi/ bandhead emissions near 309 nm. The camera consists of a quartz and CaF achromat lense-coupled to an ultraviolet image intensifier which is in turn fiber-coupled to a focus projection scan (FPS) vidicon. Application of ultrasonic waves to assess grain structure in cast stainless steel

Description: Although the ASME code requires the inspection of cast stainless steel (CSS) piping in nuclear reactors, it has not been possible to demonstrate unambiguously that current inspection techniques are adequate. Improved methods for computing masses from numerical simulations

Description: An important advance in the computation of hadron and glueball masses has been the introduction of non-local operators. This talk summarizes the critical signal-to-noise ratio of glueball correlation functions in the continuum limit, and discusses the case of (q{bar q} and qqq) hadrons in the chiral limit. A slit aperture for the monitoring x-ray experiment (MOXE)

Description: We have investigated a slit aperture as an alternative to the square pinhole aperture for the MOXE detectors, which are to be put on the Soviet satellite Spectrum X-Gamma. A slit offers advantages for better discrimination of sources in crowded regions, eliminates the need for support structures for the aperture window, and does not compromise the signal-to-noise (S/N) of a point source. Description: The design of diffracting crystals for use in x-ray fluorescence spectrometers is discussed. The initial scientific program at the NSLS infrared beamline

Description: Unique extraction optics (90 {times} 90 mrads) at the NSLS U4IR line offer high brightness beams at up to mm wavelengths with a {approximately}1ns pulse structure. Radiation hardness and annealing tests of a custom VLSI device

Description: Several NMOS custom VLSI ( Microplex'') circuits have been irradiated with a 500 rad/hr {sup 60}Co source. With power off three of four chips tested have survived doses exceeding 1 Mrad. With power on at a 25% duty cycle, all chips tested failed at doses ranging from 10 to 130 krad. Test beam results for silicon microstrip detectors with VLSI read-out

Description: A telescope consisting of three silicon microstrip detectors has been tested in a high energy positron beam at SLAC. Each detector has trips with 25 micron pitch and is read out by two 128-channel NMOS integrated circuits (''Microplex''). Suzaku Observations of Extreme MeV Blazar Swift J0746.3+2548

Description: We report the Suzaku observations of the high luminosity blazar SWIFT J0746.3+2548 (J0746) conducted in November 2005. This object, with z = 2.979, is the highest redshift source observed in the Suzaku Guaranteed Time Observer (GTO) period, is likely to show high gamma-ray flux peaking in the MeV range.
