Summary of S = 0 dibaryon resonances and candidates

Description: Experimental data concerning S = O dibaryon resonances are reviewed, with an emphasis on the nucleon-nucelon system. Structures observed in the ..gamma..d channel, the ..pi..d elastic scattering, pp ..-->.. ..pi..d channel, and other channels are discussed. Experimental data are compared with various theories. The short-range forces can be represented by dibaryon resonances. Further measurements to clarify the understanding of dibaryons are also discussed. 53 refs., 24 figs.

Measurement of the decay UPSILON(2S). -->. pi. /sup 0/. pi. /sup 0/UPSILON(1S)

Description: The hadronic transitions UPSILON(2S) ..-->.. ..pi../sup 0/..pi..UPSILON(1S) ..-->.. ..gamma gamma gamma gamma..l/sup +/l/sup -/ (l = ..mu.. or e) are investigated using the Crystal Ball detector. The analysis is based on 193,000 UPSILON(2S) events produced at the DORIS II e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring from November 1982 to February 1984. We observe 44 events with a muon pair and 46 events with an electron pair in the final state. The signals in both channels are relatively background free. Assu… more

4. pi. physics. [/sup 40/Ar + KCl, 0. 4 to 1. 8 GeV/A]

Description: Exclusive ..pi../sup -/ and charged-particle production in collisions of /sup 40/Ar on KCl are studied at incident energies from 0.4 to 1.8 GeV/A. The correlation between the ..pi../sup -/ and the total charged particle multiplicity confines the reaction along a narrow ridge with no exotic islands of pion production. For high multiplicities the system reaches the total disintegration of target and projectile into singly charged fragments and pions. Every 200 MeV/A datum was taken with a central… more

Glueballs of QCD and beyond

Description: There are two methods discussed by which glueballs might be found. In the first, an OZI suppressed channel with variable mass is used, such as the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n. The breakdown of the OZI suppression is the glueball signal. The OZI suppression is a filter letting glueballs pass while strongly rejecting conventional hadronic states. The other method is to look in a channel enriched in gluons such as the radiative decay of the J/psi and search for new phenomena, such as… more

Search for rare muon and pion decay modes with the crystal box detector

Description: New experiental upper limits for the branching ratios of the lepton-family-number nonconserving decays ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma.. and ..mu../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/..gamma gamma.. are presented. A new determination of ..gamma.., the ratio of pion axial vector to vector form factors, from radiative pion decay is also reported. These results are from data taken with the Crystal Box detector at LAMPF. 11 refs., 7 figs.

Recent results for Mark III

Description: This paper presents recent results from the Mark III detector at SPEAR, in the open charm sector. The first topic discussed is the reanalysis of the direct measurement of the D hadronic branching fractions, where a detailed study has been made of the Cabibbo suppressed and multi-..pi../sup 0/'s D decays backgrounds in the double tag sample. Next, the Dalitz plot analysis of the D decays to K..pi pi.. is presented, leading to the relative fractions of three-body versus pseudoscalarvector decays.… more

Glueball resonance and alternative explanations of the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n*

Description: The observation of three resonances (in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n) which break down the OZI suppression was attributed to the production of these states by 1-3 glueball(s). The final partial wave analysis of approx. = 4000 phi phi n events was presented and agrees with prior publications within errors. Alternative explanations in terms of otherwise explaining the OZI suppression breakdown or finding other kinematic mechanisms to explain the BNL/CCNY data are discussed and fo… more

Emission of complex fragments in compound nucleus decay

Description: The compound nucleus mechanism for complex fragment emission is discussed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The role of the potential energy as a function of mass asymmetry is shown in experimental charge distributions. This process is followed from near the threshold up to bombarding energies of several tens of MeV A. 12 refs., 12 figs.

New Results From the LASS (Large Aperture Superconducting Solenoid) Spectrometer

Description: New results are presented from analyses of several mesonic and baryonic states containing one or more strange quarks. The data are taken from a high statistics (4 events/nb) study of K p interactions at 11 GeV/c carried out in the LASS Spectrometer at SLAC. New information is reported on the underlying K* states and also evidence for selective coupling of K eta to the K*'s; on the strangeonium members of the axial vector nonets in the K anti K channel; and on evidence for an * state.

The Argand amplitudes for the phi phi events from p yields phi phi n at 22 GeV/c

Description: We obtained the Argand plots for the three phi phi I/sup G/J/sup PC/ = 0 2 amplitudes, which completely describe our 6658 events (after a 13% background subtraction) coming from the reaction p phi phi n at 22 GeV/c. The essential part of this determination is the partial wave analysis of the background reaction p phi K K n (1934 events).

Recent results on D meson decays from the MARK III

Description: The MARK III Collaboration recently completed the analysis of a number of decay modes of charged and neutral D mesons produced in electron-positron collisions near the peak of the psi(3770) resonance at SLAC's SPEAR storage ring. The mesons were produced nearly at rest in pairs, either D/sup +/D/sup -/ or D/sup 0/ anti D/sup 0/, at a center-of-mass energy below the threshold for DD production. The unique kinematics of the production allow us to isolate the charmed meson signal clearly and unamb… more

Crystal Ball results on tau decays

Description: This report reviews measurements and upper limit determinations for a number of exclusive 1-prong tau decay modes using the Crystal Ball detector. These results are important input to the apparent discrepancy between the topological and sum-of-exclusive branching fractions in 1-prong tau decays.

Entrance Channel Limitations in the High Energy Fusion of Light-Heavy Systems Leading to /sup 40/Ca and /sup 42/Ca

Description: The question of compound nucleus or entrance channel-type limitation to the fusion cross section has been approached effectively in experiments where the same compound nucleus is populated by different projectile-target combinations. Fusion data are available for several systems leading to the compound nuclei /sup 40/Ca and /sup 42/Ca. In this study we report on measurements of fusion cross sections done on /sup 28/Si + /sup 12/C and /sup 30/Si + /sup 2/C over a wide range of bombarding energie… more

High nuclear temperatures by antimatter-matter annihilation

Description: It is suggested that the quark-gluon phase be created through the use of antiproton or antideuteron beams. The first advantage to this method, using higher energy antiprotons than 1.5 GeV/c, is that the higher momenta antiprotons penetrate more deeply so that mesons produced are more nearly contained within the nucleus. Another advantage is that the annihilation products are very forward-peaked and tend to form a beam of mesons so that the energy density does not disperse very rapidly. Calculat… more

rho/sup 0/. omega. production in photon photon interactions

Description: The subject of this dissertation is the production of the rho/sup 0/..omega.. final state in photon photon interactions. The production of the rho/sup 0/..omega.. final state has been of interest primarily because of its similarity to the related process ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/. The cross section for rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ production demonstrates a peaking near threshold, the mechanism of which has been the subject of considerable speculation.
