Spin dynamics on percolating networks

Description: We have used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the order parameter relaxation rate GAMMA in the dilute, two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet Rb/sub 2/CoMg/sub 1-c/F/sub 4/ with c very close to the magnetic percolation threshold. Where kappa is the inverse magnetic correlation length, GAMMA approx. kappa/sup z/ with z = 2.4/sub -0.1//sup +0.2/. Our results are discussed in terms of current ideas about spin relaxation on fractals. 13 refs., 1 fig.

Multi-pion production

Description: Preliminary analysis of pion production in 1.2 GeV/nucleon Kr-RbBr collisions is presented. The negative pion multiplicity is consistent with a convolution of Poisson distributions and a freeze-out density between 1/3 and 1/2 normal nuclear density is extracted. Global negative pion kinematic variables are used to search for possible structure in the multi-pion emission. No evidence for structured emission or conservation constraints is found. Pion interferometry analysis gives a source radius … more

Laser materials: July 1, 1977-July 31, 1978

Description: Fluoride materials display specific properties applicable for use as active and passive optical elements for advanced laser programs. Generally, these materials exhibit low values of n/sub 2/ and high ultraviolet transmission. Nd:YLF is a very promising laser fusion oscillator element operating in conjunction with phosphate and fluoroberyllate systems. New materials possessing high concentrations of terbium and cerium - KTb/sub 3/F/sub 10/, RbTb/sub 3/F/sub 10/ and potassium cerium compounds, d… more

Ionic alkali halide XUV laser feasibility study

Description: The objective of this work is to assess the feasibility of a select set of ionic alkali halide XUV laser concepts by obtaining the relevant kinetic and spectroscopic parameters required for a proof-of-principle and conceptual design. The proposed lasers operate in the 80--200 nm spectral region and do not require input from outside radiation sources for their operation. Frequency up-conversion and frequency mixing techniques and therefore not considered in the work to be described. An experimen… more

Low-density, salt-loaded foams. [RbF]

Description: An experiment was conducted at LLL that required low-density, fine-celled foams uniformly loaded with rubidium. Foams meeting these requirements were produced by impregnating foams made from polyacrylonitrile with rubidium fluoride. Foams with densities from 0.025 to 0.4 g/cm/sup 3/ were prepared and loaded with 0.002 to 0.20 g/cm/sup 3/ of rubidium fluoride.

Dynamics of random spin systems

Description: We present inelastic neutron scattering experiments on three prototypical random magnets. For the dilute, insulating antiferromagnet Rb/sub 2/Co/sub c/Mg/sub 1-c/F/sub 4/, the randomness has purely geometrical consequences, and the anomalous dynamical behavior which we observe for c close to the magnetic percolation threshold is due to the fractal nature of percolating networks. Comparison of inelastic and quasielastic scattering data demonstrate the dynamical nature of the spin glass transitio… more

Development of rubidium and niobium containing plastic foams. Final report

Description: Rubidium fluoride and niobium metal-containing foam samples (rods and sheets) were prepared using two foam sytems: (1) hydrophilic polyurethanes prepared from W.R. Grace Co.'s Hypol prepolymers and (2) polyimides prepared from Monsanto Company's Skybond polyimide resin. The first system was used only for preparation of rubidium fluoride-containing foams while the second was used for both rubidium fluoride and niobium-containing foams. The niobium metal could readily be incorporated into the pol… more

Light scattering studies of solids and atomic vapors

Description: The general technique of light scattering and luminescence was used to study the properties of a number of material systems. First, multi-phonon resonant Raman scattering up to four phonons in GaSe and one- and two-phonon resonant Raman scattering in the mixed GaS/sub x/Se/sub 1-x/ crystals with x < or = 0.23 were investigated. Second, the observation of one-phonon resonant Raman scattering in HfS/sub 2/ is reported. The result is used to determine the position of the direct gap of HfS/sub 2/. … more

Neutron scattering studies of low dimensional magnetic systems

Description: Within the last few years, neutron scattering studies have been carried out on several new prototypes of low dimensional (2D or 1D) magnetic systems. Discussions of a 2D Ising antiferromagnet K/sub 2/CoF/sub 4/ (Ikeda and Hirakawa) are presented along with neutron scattering results on K/sub 2/NiF/sub 4/, Rb/sub 2/Mn/sub 0/./sub 5/Ni/sub 0/./sub 5/F/sub 4/, and Rb/sub 2/Mn/sub 0/./sub 5/Mg/sub 0/./sub 5/F/sub 4/. Also reported are new results of high resolution of (CD/sub 3/)/sub 4/N MnCl/sub 3… more

Neutron study of fracton excitations in percolating antiferromagnets

Description: The authors report the results of an inelastic neutron scattering experiment on nearly-percolating Heisenberg antiferromagnets (RbMn{sub c}Mg{sub 1{minus}o}F{sub 3}), in which the Mn concentrations (C = 0.31, 0.34 and 0.39) are very close to the percolation threshold (c{sub p} = 0.312). A broad peak superimposed on Ising-cluster excitations was observed throughout the Brillouin zone. The intensity of a broad peak increased on approaching the percolation threshold. The origin of this broad peak … more

Experimental studies of critical behavior in systems with quenched disorder. Progress report 1995--1996

Description: During the past year the author finished a variety of projects and started new projects with a major focus on randomness and frustration in magnetic systems. A major achievement has been to do critical behavior measurements on a random-field system Fe{sub 0.91}Zn{sub 0.09}F{sub 2}. Experimental collaborations are ongoing with the Marinelli group from Rome. Earlier measurements of the dynamics near phase transitions to a Heisenberg system RbMnF{sub 3} were extended. The author is collaborating w… more
