Fortran for the 1980's

Description: The new standard Fortran 77 has not been available long, but the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) committee X3J3 responsible for Fortran standardization is already working on the next revision. Since the result of this work will be a candidate for an international (ISO) standard, it is important that work being done now become known to all persons interested in Fortran. A new set of problems related to the accommodation of related standards in data base management and real-time proc… more

On-line chemical composition analyzer development

Description: The energy consumed in distillation processes in the United States represents nearly three percent of the total national energy consumption. If effective control of distillation columns can be accomplished, it has been estimated that it would result in a reduction in the national energy consumption of 0.3%. Real-time control based on mixture composition could achieve these savings. However, the major distillation processes represent diverse applications and at present there does not exist a pro… more

Expert system control of a six-legged walking telerobot

Description: The Robotics Technology Group of the Savannah River Laboratory has implemented a three-stage expert system for a six-legged walking telerobot. Remote operation of this machine requires the knowledge of a highly skilled operator. Stability, size, and mode of operation considerations must take place continuously, in general, much more so than with a typical wheeled vehicle. The technology employed provides for quasi-real-time computer control, manual control, and an expert advisor -- all in the s… more

(Intrusion Path Analysis)

Description: The design and implementation of an Intrusion Path Analysis (IPA) function came about as a result of the upgrades to the security systems at the Savannah River Site (SRS), near Aiken, South Carolina. The stated requirements for IPA were broad, leaving opportunity for creative freedom during design and development. The essential elements were that it: be based on alarm and sensor state data; consider insider as well as outsider threats; be flexible and easily enabled or disabled; not be processo… more

LSQFT: a nonlinear least squares data fitting subroutine suitable for minicomputers. [In FORTRAN for Hewlett Packard 1000]

Description: The FORTRAN subroutine LSQFT is described which uses the Gauss method to fit nonlinear functions to data. This particular program is suitable for use on a minicomputer that is utilized for real-time data acquisition and analysis. A sample problem is described that requires a nine-parameter nonlinear fit to 200 data points. This problem serves both to illustrate the use of LSQFT and to compare its results with TJMAR1, a nonlinear parameter estimation program available in the Sandia MATHLIB, for … more

General purpose computers in real time

Description: I see three main trends in the use of general purpose computers in real time. The first is more processing power. The second is the use of higher speed interconnects between computers (allowing more data to be delivered to the processors). The third is the use of larger programs running in the computers. Although there is still work that needs to be done, I believe that all indications are that the online need for general purpose computers should be available for the SCC and LHC machines. 2 fig… more

Microscope and method of use

Description: A method and apparatus for electronically focusing and electronically scanning microscopic specimens are given. In the invention, visual images of even moving, living, opaque specimens can be acoustically obtained and viewed with virtually no time needed for processing (i.e., real time processing is used). And planar samples are not required. The specimens (if planar) need not be moved during scanning, although it will be desirable and possible to move or rotate nonplanar specimens (e.g., laser… more

Cooperative testing of a positive personnel identifier

Description: HEDL has a requirement to ensure the identification of remote computer terminal operators on a real-time nuclear inventory data base. The integrity of this data base depends on input from authorized individuals. Thus, a key to developing such a system is the ability to positively identify people attempting access to the system. Small scale tests of the Identimat 2000T hand geometry unit with an adjusting alogrithm have suggested a promising solution. To prove operational suitability, HEDL, in c… more

Four-wheel-drive powertrain models for real-time simulation

Description: Dynamic vehicle powertrain models have been formulated by many researchers for particular applications, mainly the analysis of powertrain characteristics or vibration. In this paper, we formulate models of four-wheel-drive vehicle powertrains for the purpose of real-time simulation. While not encompassing the complete characteristics of powertrain operation, these models are applicable for use in vehicle simulators, and include both the differential and lock-up modes of four-wheel-drive transfe… more
