Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Atmospheric Signals From Explosions and Their Interpretation

Description: Results are reported from a series of experimental highexplosive shots under inversion conditions at the Nevada Test Site which were made in an attempt to refine blast prediction techniques. Applications of the data in determinations of the amount of energy which remains in the blast wave as it reaches acoustic level and in determinations of the magnitude of the reflection factor when the blast wave strikes the ground are discussed. A Modified Pyroelectric Sodium Fluoride Carrier Distillation Medthod For The Spectrographic Analysis Of Impurities In Plutonium

Description: A modification of the pyroelectric sodium fluoride carrier distillation method for analysis of impurities in plutonium metal is described. The metal is dissolved. Plutonium is precipitated and treated with nitric acid. The slurry obtained is dried and ignited. The resultant low density oxide is mixed with sodium fluoride and pressed into a pellet for arcing. Analysis of Vanadium in Milk Powder by Neutron Activation Analysis Using a Rapid Radiochemical Separation of 3.77-Minute Vanadium-52

Description: A procedure is described for the activation determination of V in powdered milk using 3.77-min V/sup 52/. The quantity of V in the sample is obtained by comparing the V/sup 52/ radioactivity found in the test sample with the V/sup 52/ radioactivity in a V comparator sample that is treated in the same manner as the test sample. The procedure can also be used for the determination of V in a variety of materials. (P.C.H.)

Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Ultrasonic Vibrations on Burnout Heat Flux With Boiling Water. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, January-March 1961

Description: In this investigation, the effect of an ultrasonic field on the maximum nucleate heat flux (burnout) that can be sustained by boiling water in a flow system will be determined. The water will flow in the direction of sound propagation within an annular flow channel bounded on the outside by a glass tube and on the inside by a 0.25-in. OD heating element. Ultrasonic Attenuation in Lead

Description: The absorption of longitudinal ultrasonic waves was studied as a function of transverse magnetic field in pure single crystals of lead at 1.2 deg K. The results were found to be generally consistent with the Fermi surface of lead suggested by Gold.
