A parametric study of smoke propagation using the CFAST computer code

Description: When performing a Fire Hazards Analysis (FHA), fire protection engineers are often. interested in determining the degree and timing of smoke propagation from one room to Another within buildings. Often, the engineer must make judgments based on a limited set of guidelines and available information. In order to provide additional data to assist in these judgments, the Risk and Source Term Technology (R&STT) Group of Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) has conducted a parametric study of s… more

Considerations of torsional effects on the seismic response of nuclear facilities

Description: This paper studies the effects of torsion in models developed for performing soil-structure interaction analyses of nonsymmetric structure such as the process structures in many Department of Energy (DOE) facilities. Because of the unsymmetrical nature of these structures, the introduction of the torsional effects could significantly amplify their structural response to seismic motions. In this study, a typical nuclear process building was employed and seismic analyses were performed with the o… more

A methodology to model local nonlinearities in a slender reinforced concrete member subjected to seismic deformations

Description: A methodology is proposed for modeling local nonlinear behavior of slender reinforced concrete members. The nonlinearity is modeled by two orthogonal assemblages of nonlinear truss elements representing the nonlinear behavior of concrete and steel reinforcement. The trusses represent narrow strips of concrete to closely calculate the section neutral axis. This modeling procedure is computationally very efficient for seismic nonlinear dynamic analysis. Such a model is used to evaluate a critical… more

Airbags to Martian Landers: Analyses at Sandia National Laboratories

Description: A new direction for the national laboratories is to assist US business with research and development, primarily through cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs). Technology transfer to the private sector has been very successful as over 200 CRADAs are in place at Sandia. Because of these cooperative efforts, technology has evolved into some new areas not commonly associated with the former mission of the national laboratories. An example of this is the analysis of fabric structu… more

Dynamic characterization and damage detection in the I-40 bridge over the Rio Grande

Description: In the 1960`s and 1970`s over 2500 bridges were built in the U.S. with a design similar to those on Interstate 40 over the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico. These bridges were built without structural redundancy and typically have only two plate girders carrying the entire dead and live loads. Failure of either girder is assumed to produce catastrophic failure of the bridge, hence these bridges are referred to as fracture-critical bridges. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the … more

Filter efficiency and pressure drop calculations through two and three dimensional fiber arrays

Description: We have used a commercially available fluid dynamics code, NEKTON version 2.85, and the Langevin particle equation of motion to compute the particle capture efficiency and pressure drop through selected two- and three-dimensional fiber arrays. The approach we used was to first compute the air velocity vector field throughout a defined region containing the fiber matrix. The particle capture in the fiber matrix is then computed by superimposing the Langevin particle equation of motion over the f… more

Decontaminating lead bricks and shielding

Description: Lead used for shielding is often surface contaminated with radioisotopes and is therefore a RCRA D008 mixed waste. The technology-based standard for treatment is macroencapsulation. However, decontaminating and recycling the clean lead is a more attractive solution. Los Alamos National Laboratory decontaminates material and equipment contaminated with radioisotopes. Decontaminating lead poses special problems because of the RCRA hazard classification and the size of the inventory, now about 50 … more

Hierarchical analysis of filtration. Progress report

Description: The original proposal for this work suggested two lines Of analysis that could be used to develop an hierarchical analysis of filtration. The first of these was semi-empirical and required the use of an angle-dependent rate coefficient to model the effect of particle inertia, while the second made use of a particle velocity decomposition that separated the velocity into an inertial part and a diffusive part. We have concluded that the semiempirical approach cannot lead to an efficient treatment… more
