Experimental observations and model calculations of impurity radiation in a plasma gun compact torus experiment

Description: Several types of radiation measurements were performed on the Beta II compact forms experiment. Among these are time integrated spectra ranging in wavelength from the vuv to the uv, time resolved bolometer measurements of radiation from the x-ray to the infrared, and time and wavelength resolved measurements of certain spectral lines. Startup of reversed-field mirror reactors using coaxial plasma guns

Description: Preliminary calculations are given that indicate that a coaxial plasma gun might scale reasonably to reactor-grade operating conditions. Ongoing experiments and numerical simulations should shed some light on the validity of the described scaling laws.

Studies of the Formation of Field Reversed Plasma by a Magnetized Co-Axial Plasma Gun

Description: The gun injects axially into a drift tank followed by a magnetic mirror. For the experiments reported here, only the guide coils outside the vacuum vessel and solenoids on the plasma gun electrodes were used; the mirror coil was not energized. Photon compression in cylinders

Description: It has been shown theoretically that intense microwave radiation is absorbed non-classically by a newly enunciated mechanism when interacting with hydrogen plasma. Compact toroid experiments: spheromaks and field-reversed configurations

Development of a Plasma Streaming System for the Mirror Fusion Test Facility

Description: The Plasma Streaming System (PSS) is an essential portion of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF), scheduled for completion in October 1981. Theory of field-reversed mirrors and field-reversed plasma-gun experiments. Paper IAEA-CN-38/R-2

Description: Experimental and theoretical studies of field reversal in a mirror machine are reported. Plasma-gun experiments demonstrate that reversed-field plasma layers are formed. Model calculations for the explosive generator-driven dense plasma focus

Preliminary Langmuir probe results on the CTX gun experiment

Description: Preliminary results obtained with a double Langmuir probe in the Compact Toroid experiment facility confirm the existence of a gun plasma of n approx. 5 x 10/sup 14/ cm/sup -3/ and T approx. 10 eV lasting for approx. 250 to 400 ..mu..s, which is consistent with interferometry and Thomson scattering data. The probe current characteristics as a function of voltage suggest non-Maxwellian features of the particles distribution functions.

GeV electron beams from a centimeter-scale laser-driven plasmaaccelerator

Description: esults are presented on the generation ofquasi-monoenergeticelectron beams with energy up to 1GeV using a 40TWlaser and a 3.3 cm-long hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide.Electron beams were not observed without a plasma channel, indicatingthat self-focusing alone could not be relied upon for effective guidingofthe laser pulse. Nozzle model of flowing plasma with field reversal

Description: The flowing plasma outflow from a field-reversed plasma gun is modeled by a one-dimensional calculation which is based on the well-known problem of fluid flow through a nozzle. The results suggest that a low plasma mass flow rate is necessary for reconnection to be important. Comparison with 2D MHD calculations and with preliminary data from the BETA-II experiment are consistent with the model at this time.

Prospects for generating 1-10 TPa pressures with a railgun

Description: It has been demonstrated that a plasma arc can be accelerated along two current carrying parallel rails and used to accelerate a projectile. We have performed an extensive analysis and found the task of using a railgun to accelerate an impactor plate to velocities of 10 to 40 km/s to be feasible with contemporary technology. This range of impact velocities would enable shock pressures of 1 to 10 TPa to be generated for EOS research.
