Anomalous low mass e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair production in 17 GeV/c. pi. /sup -/p collisions

Description: An experiment was performed at the Multiparticle Spectrometer using 17 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ from the BNL AGS, triggering upon inclusive e/sup +/e/sup -/ production. Electron identification was based on two transition radiator detectors and lead-scintillator shower detectors. Good acceptance for the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair covered the region x/sub F/ > 0.3 for all p/sub T/ and pair masses. Charged particles and photons associated with the e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair are detected over a large solid ang… more

Search for narrow anti pp states in the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. p. pi. /sup -/ anti pp at 16 GeV/c

Description: A sensitive (greater than or equal to 5 events/nb) search for narrow anti pp states was carried out at the BNL Multiparticle Spectrometer. No evidence of narrow anti pp states was found at 2020 and 2200 MeV in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. p..pi../sup -/ anti pp at 16 GeV/c. 2 sigma upper limits of less than or equal to 3 nb are quoted for these states in the data. Informal Technical Progress Report and Budget for Incremental Funding

Description: The principal activities during the last year were related to LAMPF experiments, a newly initiated radiochemical search for Glashow particles, and the writing up of experimental work completed at FERMILAB studying the interaction of 400-MeV protons and 150-MeV pions with complex nuclei. Collaboration is proceeding with Los Alamos on heavy methanes as atmospheric tracers and in proposing a geological search for enhanced solar neutrinos in past geological times.

Measurement of the analyzing power for pion proton elastic scattering between 471 and 687 MeV/c

Description: The analyzing power, A/sub N/, has been measured for ..pi../sup + -/p..--> pi../sup + -/p at 471, 547, 625, and 687 MeV/c in an angular range corresponding to -0.9 less than or equal to cos theta/sub cm/ less than or equal to 0.8. A polarized proton target with polarization axis normal to the scattering plane was used. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence, using a magnetic spectrometer and a wire chamber/scintillator array, except in cases where one of the particles… more

The creation of high energy densities with antimatter beams

Description: The use of antiprotons (and antideuterons) for the study of the behavior of nuclear matter at high energy density is considered. It is shown that high temperatures and high energy densities can be achieved for small volumes. Also investigated is the strangeness production in antimatter annihilation. It is found that the high rate of Lambda production seen in a recent experiment is easily understood. The Lambda and K-short rapidity distributions are also reproduced by the model considered. 11 re… more

Polarized target experiment at Fermilab. [Polarization, 100 GeV]

Description: Preliminary results are given for polarization measurements for ..pi../sup +/p and ..pi../sup -/p elastic scattering at 100 GeV. Results are not yet given for pp scattering also studied. It is noted that strictly speaking it is the asymmetry in the scattering off polarized protons that is measured. One relies on time-reversal invariance when this asymmetry is termed polarization. The values of the polarization are everywhere very small at this energy. These results appear to show no significant… more

Glueballs in the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n at 22 GeV/c

Description: The current favorite candidate theory of strong interactions is Quantum Chromodynamics. In this theory, bound states of two or more gluons, called glueballs, must exist. Experimentally, the detection of glueballs (all of which are massive enough to decay quickly to ordinary q anti q hadrons) is complicated by the lack of any explicit signature. The calculation of the mass of the low-lying glueballs by lattice gauge methods and the MIT bag model at present give only a rough guide to experimental… more

delta. -nucleus interactions. CTP No. 887

Description: The theoretical description of pion-nucleus interactions, specifically in the intermediate-energy region dominated ..delta..-excitation, is discussed. Attention is focused on the interaction with and propagation through the nucleus of pions and ..delta..'s. The approach followed basically consists of viewing the ..delta..-nucleus system, formed by pion excitation of a nucleon, as a doorway for the pion-nucleus reaction. Analysis of the interacting ..delta..-nucleus system then leads to new dyna… more

Opening address (for the International Conference on Hadron Spectroscopy)

Description: Some historical perspective and comments are presented on some aspects of the present state of the field of hadron interactions and its potential future. Included in the discussion are the results of pion-nucleon cross sections measurements of the 1950's, the ''double pole'' of the A2 (which later was found to be wrong), and the local gauge invariant SU(3)/sub color/ and QCD. 9 refs., 9 figs. A perspective on lepton-photon physics

Description: This paper reviews some key experiments of the past in which the same basic physical processes are attacked both through lepton-photon interaction and by using hadron machines as primary tools. Not surprisingly, it is concluded that the basic distinction between lepton-photon physics and elementary particle physics in general is unreal but that the tools and methodology can be very different indeed. A look is then taken into the expected future evolution of particle accelerators. Existing accel… more

Glueballs of QCD and beyond

Description: There are two methods discussed by which glueballs might be found. In the first, an OZI suppressed channel with variable mass is used, such as the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n. The breakdown of the OZI suppression is the glueball signal. The OZI suppression is a filter letting glueballs pass while strongly rejecting conventional hadronic states. The other method is to look in a channel enriched in gluons such as the radiative decay of the J/psi and search for new phenomena, such as… more
