Proton density modulation of D atoms in PdD/sub 1-x/

Description: Recent resistivity and neutron diffraction measurements have provided evidence for ordering of D(H) atoms on the octahedral interstitial sites of PdD/sub 1-x/. This order--disorder transition is responsible for the 50 K anomaly which has been reported in many of the physical properties. Neutron diffraction measurements on a PdD/sub 0/ /sub 76/ single crystal revealed satellite reflection at (4/5,2/5,0) and equivalent positions. These satellites can be accounted for by a multi-domained tetragona… more

Comparison of hydrogen diffusion in Ti sub 2 PdH sub x to the behavior for Ti sub 2 CuH sub x and Zr sub 2 PdH sub x

Description: Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the proton spin-lattice and rotating-frame relaxation times were made on Ti{sub 2}PdH{sub x} over the temperature range 100K to 580K. Analyses of the NMR data for Ti{sub 2}PdH{sub x} gave hydrogen diffusion parameters that corresponded with the results previously obtained from Ti{sub 2}CuH{sub x} and Zr{sub 2}PdH{sub x} when the hydrogen atoms occupied a single type of tetrahedral interstital site. However, the diffusion activation energy decreases in … more

Metallization of large silicon wafers. Final report

Description: A metallization scheme has been developed which allows selective plating of silicon solar cell surfaces. The system is comprised of three layers. Palladium, through the formation of palladium silicide at 300/sup 0/C in nitrogen, makes ohmic contact to the silicon surface. Nickel, plated on top of the palladium silicide layer, forms a solderable interface. Lead-tin solder on the nickel provides conductivity and allows a convenient means for interconnection of cells. To apply this metallization, … more

A new phase in palladium hydride technology

Description: Two plateaux are observed in both the absorption and desorption isotherms of palladium hydride. For the absorption isotherm, a change in plateau pressure is observed at a hydrogen-to-metal (H/M) ratio of about 0.35 for all temperatures studied. For the desorption isotherm, the change in plateau pressure appears to be a function of temperature, ranging from an H/M ratio of 0.18 at 80{degrees}C to 0.3 at 140{degrees}C. These data are interpreted as being experimentally observed boundaries to an e… more

Electrochemical and neutron diffraction measurements of PdD sub x cathodes

Description: Potentiometric and in-situ neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out on PdD{sub x} cathodes in LiOD-saturated D{sub 2}O solution. Open-circuit potentials of the PdD{sub x} electrode after interruption of high-intensity cathodic currents (300--500 mA/cm{sup 2}) showed a more negative potential ({epsilon} = 1010 mV, measured against a Hg/HgO reference electrode) than that expected from the literature. The anomalous potentials were observed for about 10--20 min after current interrupt… more

Tritium labelled nucleotides: Heterogeneous metal catalyzed exchange labelling of ATP with tritium gas

Description: Adenosine 5{prime} triphosphate (ATP) in aqueous solution has been labeled by exchange with tritium gas in the presence of palladium oxide catalyst. Comparison with our experiments using Pd/BaSO{sub 4} as the catalyst shows that we have obtained product with higher specific activity and improved chemical purity. {sup 3}H NMR spectroscopy of the tritiated ATP shows labelling in both the C-8 and C-2 positions, and the integral ratio of these positions was found to vary from 3:1 to 1:1 under diffe… more

The synthesis and structural characterization of novel transition metal fluorides

Description: High purity KMF[sub 6] and K[sub 2]MF[sub 6] salts (M = Mo,Re, Ru, Os, Ir, Pt) are obtained from reduction hexafluorides. A rhombohedral unit cell is observed for KReF[sub 6]. Fluoride ion capture by Lewis acids from the hexafluorometallate (IV) salts affords high purity tetrafluorides for M = Mo, Re, Ru, Os, and Pd. The structure of RuF[sub 4] is determined from X-ray synchrotron and neutron powder data. Unit cells based on theorthorhombic PdF[sub 4] type cell are derived from X-ray powder dat… more

A study of Pd-Ta on Si(100) using AES, RBS and variable energy positron annihilation

Description: The applicability of Pd/sub x/Ta/sub 1-x/ as a diffusion barrier on Si has been investigated. For this purpose Pd/sub x/Ta/sub 1-x/ films of 200 nm thickness (x ranges from 0 to 1) were deposited on Si(100), and the reaction between over-layer and substrate was studied as a function of temperature. Interaction was found to occur at temperatures increasing with the Ta content. The as-deposited Pd/sub x/Ta/sub 1-x/ films with 0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.6 were found to be … more

Raman studies of hydrogen vibrational modes in palladium

Description: The phonon density of states of substoichiometric polycrystalline Pd-H(D) was investigated by Raman scattering above and below the 50 K anomaly. The Raman spectra for hydrogen and deuterium were found to be asymmetric and peaked at 58.5 MeV and 39.7 MeV, respectively, in near agreement with inelastic neutron scattering data. The scattering mechanism appears to require hydrogen-hydrogen interactions. No major changes in the optical spectra were observed in going through the 50 K anomaly.

Modeling of temporal behavior of isotopic exchange between gaseous hydrogen and palladium hydride power

Description: A parametric rate-equation model is described which depicts the time dependent behavior of the isotopic exchange process occurring between the solid and gas phases in gaseous hydrogen (deuterium) flows through packed-powder palladium deuteride (hydride) beds. The exchange mechanism is assumed to be rate-limited by processes taking place on the surface of the powder. The fundamental kinetic parameter of the model is the isotopic exchange probability, p, which is the probability that an isotopic … more
