Interaction of biological systems with static and ELF electric and magnetic fields

Description: Although background levels of atmospheric electric and geomagnetic field levels are extremely low, over the past several decades, human beings and other life forms on this planet have been subjected to a dramatically changing electromagnetic milieu. An exponential increase in exposure to electromagnetic fields has occurred, largely because of such technological advances as the growth of electrical power generation and transmission systems, the increased use of wireless communications, and the u… more

Study to determine the basic insulation level requirements for a prototype 1200 kV CGIT cable system

Description: The required lightning impulse withstand characteristics of a prototype 1200 kV CGIT System were studied. It was assumed that lightning overvoltages would be introduced into the CGIT System due to lightning strokes which terminate on the overhead transmission system connected to the CGIT system. A detailed analysis of several proposed configurations for 1100 to 1200 kV transmission lines indicated that the most probable form of lightning overvoltage introduced into the CGIT System would be caus… more

Electric utility industry experience with geomagnetic disturbances

Description: A geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) by its nature occurs globally and almost simultaneously. Severe geomagnetic storms cause problems for electric power systems. The vulnerability of electric power systems to such events has apparently increased during the last 10 to 20 years because power system transmission lines have become more interconnected and have increased in length and because power systems are now operated closer to their limits than in the past. In this report, the experience of electri… more

Final environmental assessment: Los Reales 115 kV transmission line alternative routes

Description: The Central Arizona Project (CAP) was authorized as a part of the Colorado River Basin Project Act (Public Law 90-537) on September 30, 1968. The primary purpose of the CAP is to furnish water for agricultural, municipal, and industrial uses in central and southern Arizona, and western New Mexico. Due to its magnitude, the CAP is divided into several major features serving separate but interrelated functions. The Tucson Aqueduct Phase B pumping plants were designed and constructed to operate on… more

Design concepts for a pulse power test facility to simulate EMP surges in overhead power lines. Part I. Fast pulse

Description: Objective of the study was to create conceptual designs of high voltage pulsers capable of simulating two types of electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) caused by a high-altitude nuclear burst; the slow rise time magnetohydrodynamic (MHD-EMP) and the fast rise time high-altitude EMP (HEMP). The pulser design was directed towards facilities capable of performing EMP vulnerability testing of components used in the national electric power system.

Dynamic load model study for overhead transmission lines. Final report, November 1975--September 1976

Description: A study was undertaken to examine by scale models the dynamic longitudinal loadings on flexible transmission structures. In the course of the investigation certain new concepts have also been developed concerning the elements of a transmission line system which contributes to the local flexibility of individual structures. Further, new methods of analysis were devised for the future use by designers in this field. These model test results have demonstrated that it is possible to simulate a numb… more

The Integrity of ACSR Full Tension Single-Stage Splice Connector at Higher Operation Temperature

Description: Due to increases in power demand and limited investment in new infrastructure, existing overhead power transmission lines often need to operate at temperatures higher than those used for the original design criteria. This has led to the accelerated aging and degradation of splice connectors. It is manifested by the formation of hot-spots that have been revealed by infrared imaging during inspection. The implications of connector aging is two-fold: (1) significant increases in resistivity of the… more

Recent progress on system studies for long distance power transmission

Description: Two possible applications of helium-cooled underground cables for power transmission were studied to determine network characteristics and estimated costs. The first involved power transmission at 345 kV from a Long Island nuclear power plant to a substation 43 miles away. The second appication examined the feasibility of a 350 mi-long 550 kV transmission line from Western Pennsylvania to Allentown and Philadelphia. For both systems computer simulations were used to study operating characterist… more

Environmental assessment

Description: The proposed overhead power line construction project (Sand Dunes to Ochoa, in Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico) will supply additional electric power to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and involve construction of a new electric substation at WIPP. This would provide a redundant electrical power source to WIPP. A finding of no significant impact is made.

Sidney-North Yuma 230-kV Transmission Line Project, Colorado and Nebraska

Description: This report describes the need for a 230-kV overhead transmission line to supply power from Sidney, Nebraska to eastern Colorado. The alternative scenario compared to construction of the line is No Action. Rejected alternatives include underground lines and different routing paths, with a possible extension to the Sterling area. Both scenarios are evaluated for environmental effects, cost, and consequences for the eastern Colorado region. The proposed route is determined to be the environmental… more

Reliability of lightning resistant overhead distribution lines

Description: An assessment of the 32 year historical reliability of the 13.8 kV electrical distribution system at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee has yielded several conclusions useful In the planning of Industrial power Systems. The system configuration at ORNL has essentially remained unchanged in the last 32 years which allows a meaningful comparison of reliability trends for the plant`s eight overhead distribution lines, two of which were built in the 1960`s with lightning resistan… more

The corona noise from transmission lines was recorded, reproduced for human listeners in a simulated living room and the human response to the noise was measured in the room. It was found that: despite its low sound level, corona noise is somewhat more adversive to people than might be expected on the basis of physical measurements of the sound; corona noise may … more

Living and Working Safely Around High-Voltage Power Lines.

Description: High-voltage transmission lines can be just as safe as the electrical wiring in the homes--or just as dangerous. The crucial factor is ourselves: they must learn to behave safely around them. This booklet is a basic safety guide for those who live and work around power lines. It deals primarily with nuisance shocks due to induced voltages, and with potential electric shock hazards from contact with high-voltage lines. References on possible long-term biological effects of transmission lines are… more
