Cryogenic compressive properties of basic epoxy resin systems

Description: The compressive properties of short cylindrical samples of many different epoxy resin systems have been measured at ambient temperature and at 77/sup 0/K. These are pure resin systems of known chemistry, without the inorganic fillers or fibrous reinforcements needed in final cryogenic systems. Of course, chemically incorporated modifiers such as flexibilizing resins have been included. This data should make possible inferences about cryogenic properties from molecular structures and provide speā€¦ more

Studies of the surface structures of molecular crystals and of adsorbed molecular monolayers on the (111) crystal faces of platinum and silver by low-energy electron diffraction

Description: The structures of molecular crystal surfaces were investigated for the first time by the use of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). The experimental results from a variety of molecular crystals were examined and compared as a first step towards understanding the properties of these surfaces on a microscopic level. The method of sample preparation employed, vapor deposition onto metal single-crystal substrates at low temperatures in ultrahigh vacuum, allowed concurrent study of the structureā€¦ more

GC/MS characterization of condensable tars in the output stream of a stirred fixed-bed gasifier

Description: The output stream of the stirred fixed-bed gasifier at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center was sampled for total entrained material. A major portion of the entrained material, in addition to particles, is condensable tar that is subsequently removed from the process gas by wet scrubbing. Characterization of the entrained materials, specifically the tar, is important to establish contaminant levels and to evaluate performance of downstream cleanup units. Samples of tars were collected from tā€¦ more

Pretreatment of Kapton-coated cable for epoxy adhesion

Description: Preliminary testing of a new system for protecting bonded strain gages that will be attached to the MFTF magnets indicated falling electrical resistance to ground, attributed to the infiltration of moisture. The most likely infiltration route seemed to be along the Kapton lead cable, which has an outer surface of FEP fluorocarbon resin. Samples of the cable were pretreated with a fluorocarbon etchant, Tetra-Etch, for periods of 10, 25, and 40 s at room temperature, followed by rinsing with demiā€¦ more

Energies of organic compounds. Technical progress report. [Ketals, orthoesters, norbonyl ketals]

Description: Two automated reaction calorimetry systems were built and tested. The first made use of a quartz thermometer probe as the temperature measuring element. The second was constructed using a thermister which was part of a Wheatstone bridge. The off-balance voltage from the bridge was measured using the 6 1/2 digit digital voltmeter, and transferred to the microprocessor. The one disadvantage of the first system is the relatively large size of the quartz sensor. The calorimeter systems were used toā€¦ more

Prediction of long-term failure in Kevlar 49 composites

Description: Creep rupture data in Kevlar 49 epoxy usually exhibit considerable scatter: the coefficient of variation (CV) about the mean failure time at a given stress exceeds 100%. Quasi-static strength data, in contrast, shows little scatter: <4% CV for pressure vessels and <10% for impregnated strands. In this paper analysis of existing creep rupture data on Kevlar epoxy vessels at four storage pressures has produced an interesting and useful result. It was found that a significant portion of the scatteā€¦ more

Deploymerization of coal by direct solvent attack. Semi-annual report, April 1, 1983-August 31, 1983

Description: The depolymerization of Illinois No. 6 coal by a series of solvents having different basecities (pK/sub a/) and nucleophilicities (Swain-Scott nu values) showed no dependence on either the basicity of nucleophilicity of the solvents. As expected, the conversion decreases as the temperature of the reaction is reduced, but the lower the reaction temperature, the higher the percentage of amine incorporation becomes in the products. 5 tables.
