(Photoexcited Charge Pair Escape and Recombination)

Description: Progress in four research areas on this project are summarized under the following topics: (1) Geminate charge pair recombination in hexane; (2) Fast current measurements resulting from excitation of charge transfer (CT) states; (3) Measurement of the dipole moment of excited states by DC conductivity; and (4) Charge separation at macroscopic interfaces between electron donor and acceptor solids. In a final section, personnel who have contributed to the project during the past budget period are… more

Chemistry of detonation soot: Diamonds, graphite, and volatiles

Description: Detonation of a number of pure and composite explosives in tanks filled with Ar gas have yielded solid carbonaceous products (soots) with a rich chemistry. Although there are similarities, the soot from each explosive has some uniqueness. The soot are composed of very small solid particles of graphite and often diamond, having characteristic dimensions of about 20 atomic diameters. This small size and the presence of a 25 wt % heat-labile component implies an important surface chemistry for the… more

Catalysis and co-catalysis of bond cleavages in coal and coal analogs

Description: The catalytic efficiency of 2-pyridone and 4-pyridone (tautomers of 2-hydroxy and 4-hydroxypyridine) for transfer hydrogenolysis of dinaphthyl ether in tetralin at 450 C was investigated. The effectiveness of 2-pyridone dropped when the reaction time was increased, suggesting that the catalyst is destroyed. Reaction of a compound with bromine in CCl[sub 4] yielded a rearrangement product with a minor amount of the cyclization product; in acetonitrile, only the rearrangement product is obtained.

Tris(Bis(Trimethylsilyl)Amido)Uranium: Compounds with Tri-, Tetra-, and Penta-Valent Uranium

Description: This trivalent uranium compound, serves as a precursor to new tri-, tetra-, and penta-valent uranium species. The geometry about the U atom is pyramidal. Lewis-base coordination compounds of U(N(SiMe/sub 3/)/sub 2/)/sub 3/ with a one-to-one- ratio of Lewis base to uranium were isolated with pyridine, 4-dimethylamino-pyridine, 2,6-Me/sub 2/-C/sub 6/H/sub 3/NC, and TPO. Two-to-one coordination compounds were obtained with t-butylnitrile and t-butylisocyanide. Compounds with more sterically demand… more
