Summary data for U. S. commercial nuclear power plants in the United States

Description: A compilation of data is presented for all United States commercial nuclear power plants for which a construction permit application was made through the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The data are compiled in four separate tables with cross-referencing indexes: Table 1--General Data; Table 2--Reactor Data; Table 3--Site Data, and Table 4--Circulating-Water System Data. The power plants are listed in numerical order by docket number in all four tables.

Detection and diagnosis of abnormal transients in nuclear power plants

Description: This document describes a simulation-based algorithm that combines fuzzy logic with macroscopic conservation equations to diagnose multiple-failure events subject to uncertainties in transient data. Clusters of single-failure data points of similar characteristics are obtained through a pattern recognition algorithm and the cluster centers are combined in the space of macroscopic inventory derivatives to generate multiple-failure cluster centers. A fuzzy membership function is used to represent… more

Physical protection solutions for security problems at nuclear power plants. [PWR; BWR]

Description: Under Department of Energy sponsorship, Sandia National Laboratories has developed a broad technological base of components and integrated systems to address security concerns at facilities of importance, including nuclear reactors. The primary security concern at a light water reactor is radiological sabotage, a deliberate set of actions at a plant which could expose the public to a significant amount of radiation (on the order of 10 CFR 100 limits). (Also of importance to plant operators are … more

Evaluation of soil damping techniques used in soil structure interaction analysis of a nuclear power plant

Description: A prediction of dynamic soil properties at the site of a nuclear power plant plays a very important role in the seismic analysis of the facility. Conventional modal analysis procedures can accommodate virtually any range of equivalent elastic soil stiffness which is used to characterize the site. However, high radiation damping associated with energy dissipation in the soil half-space is difficult to accommodate in an elastic modal solution to the dynamic problem. Several methods are available … more

Population dose commitments due to radioactive releases from nuclear-power-plant sites in 1978

Description: Population radiation dose commitments have been estimated from reported radionuclide releases from commercial power reactors operating during 1978. Fifty-year dose commitments from a one-year exposure were calculated from both liquid and atmospheric releases for four population groups (infant, child, teen-ager and adult) residing between 2 and 80 km from each site. This report tabulates the results of these calculations, showing the dose commitments for both liquid and airborne pathways for eac… more

Public opinion and nuclear power decision-making

Description: This document discusses public opinion regarding nuclear power which is particularly difficult to tie down because of five important paradoxes that characterize it: it can be based on sound reason, but also on intense emotion; it is both national and local in perspective; at varying times it has seen nuclear power as both clean'' and dirty''; it believes nuclear power is both economic, and uneconomic; and nuclear power is perceived as having a fairly safe record, but being potentially unsafe. System for unattended surveillance of nuclear reactor behavior

Description: A multivariate statistical pattern recognition system for reactor noise analysis is presented. The basis of the system is a transformation for decoupling correlated variables and algorithms for inferring probability density functions. The system is adaptable to a variety of statistical properties of the data, and it has learning, tracking, updating, and dimensionality reduction capabilities. System design emphasizes control of the false-alarm rate. Its abilities to learn normal patterns and to … more

Assessment of nuclear power plant siting methods

Description: Several different methods have been developed for selecting sites for nuclear power plants. This report summarizes the basic assumptions and formal requirements of each method and evaluates conditions under which each is correctly applied to power plant siting problems. It also describes conditions under which different siting methods can produce different results. Included are criteria for evaluating the skill with which site-selection methods have been applied.

Meeting commercial reactor instrumentation needs

Description: Commercial nuclear reactors are instrumented for two reasons: (1) to provide information to the operators, and (2) to support automatic safety systems. The key questions the operators want answered are: Is the core being cooled and what is the temperature. Two instruments currently installed in LOFT are providing these answers. The commercial application of liquid level probes and fuel thermocouples will undoubtably bring argument from some quarters, but properly working instruments of their ty… more

Evaluation of station blackout accidents at nuclear power plants: Technical findings related to unresolved safety issue A-44: Final report

Description: ''Station Blackout,'' which is the complete loss of alternating current (AC) electrical power in a nuclear power plant, has been designated as Unresolved Safety Issue A-44. Because many safety systems required for reactor core decay heat removal and containment heat removal depend on AC power, the consequences of a station blackout could be severe. This report documents the findings of technical studies performed as part of the program to resolve this issue. The important factors analyzed inclu… more

Soil-Structure Interaction Methods, SIM Code. Volume III

Description: The Structure In Media (SIM) Code determines the response of a structure, embedded in soil/rock media, to a specified dynamic disturbance in the media. The structure is modeled as a series of lumped mass, elastic beams which may be interconnected with elastic springs. The disturbance in the free field is specified in terms of an accelerogram, the scale of which may vary with depth. Soil/structure interaction is treated in two parts. The first determines the interaction forces developed at the b… more
