Survey of existing underground openings for in-situ experimental facilities

Description: In an earlier project, a literature search identified 60 underground openings in crystalline rock capable of providing access for an in-situ experimental facility to develop geochemical and hydrological techniques for evaluating sites for radioactive waste isolation. As part of the current project, discussions with state geologists, owners, and operators narrowed the original group to 14. Three additional sites in volcanic rock and one site in granite were also identified. Site visits and appli… more

Coastal-inland solar radiation difference study. Final report

Description: The purpose of this study was to quantify the characteristics of solar insolation in the coastal zone and to determine the effect of the sea breeze circulation on the global insolation. In order to satisfy these objectives, a six station sampling network was established in the coastal plain of southeastern North Carolina, where previous evidence has indicated that the sea breeze circulation is almost a daily occurrence from late May through October. Three sites (Sloop Point, Onslow Beach, and C… more

Preliminary Study of the Uranium Potential of the Triassic Sanford Basin and Colon Cross Structure, North Carolina

Description: A preliminary geologic investigation was conducted to determine if Triassic sedimentary rocks of the Sanford basin and Colon cross structure in North Carolina are favorable hosts for uranium deposits. Rocks of adjacent Carolina slate belt were also examined as a potential source of uranium. On the basis of favorability criteria for sandstone-type uranium deposits, and geologic and geophysical investigations of the study area, the most favorable sites for further investigation are (1) at the con… more

Evaluation and targeting of geothermal energy resources in the southeastern United States. Progress report, April 1, 1977--June 30, 1977

Description: Progress is reported in the detailed study of the Winnsboro complex, South Carolina, as part of a broader project to provide insight into the behavior of uranium and thorium in syn- and post-metamorphic granitic plutons. In the area of the Winnsboro complex, a regional medium-pressure metamorphic event which reached amphibolite facies was followed by deformation and uplift with decrease in regional temperature and pressure. The Winnsboro complex was intruded with a resultant low-pressure contac… more

Continental Shelf Processes Affecting the Oceanography of the South Atlantic Bight. Progress Report, 1 June 1979-31 May 1980

Description: The papers included in this progress report summarize some significant developments in understanding the South Atlantic Bight. Some of the results are summarized as follows: Onslow Bay flushing rates can be determined using a model based on an exponential dilution model; eddy induced nitrate flux accounts for most input of new nitrogen into shelf waters; and tarballs in the Gulf Stream are not transported to the nearshore because of an apparent inner shelf density front.

Wind profile measurements at the Mod-1 site at Boone, North Carolina

Description: Three components of the wind field, temperature and pressure were measured by means of tethered balloon-borne sondes from the surface to 175 m (577 ft) and by means of a nacelle mounted system, from the surface to hub height of 43 m (140 ft). Measurements were taken over a ten day period at the Mod-1 Site in Boone, NC. Composite wind profiles are presented for different flow and stability regimes. The most extreme shears, on the order of .3 s/sup -1/, were found between 10 m (33 ft) and hub hei… more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 5. Southeast region

Description: In the Southeast region, the maximum physical potential for all sites exceeds 48,000 MW with an estimated average annual energy of more than 137,000 GWH. By comparison, these values represent about 9% of both the total potential capacity and hydroelectric energy estimated for the entire US. Of the total capacity estimated for the region, 11,800 MW has been installed. The remainder (36,200 MW) is the maximum which could be developed by upgrading and expanding existing projects (13,000 MW), and b… more

Evaluation of uranium geochemical anomalies in the Greensboro 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ NTMS area near Louisburg, NC

Description: Most uranium stream-sediment anomalies, probably all the major airborne radiometric highs, and areas of very low U/Th ratios calculated from ground scintillometer measurements appear to reflect an alluvial sand veneer rich in heavy minerals (principally monazite and zircon). In the most extensive exposure of the Castalia pluton at a quarry north of site D-15, quartz and quartz-feldspar veins are anomalous in both uranium (+25 ppM) and U/Th (+1.0). The area having most potential occurs in the no… more
