Level sensor replacement/sampling of Tank 241-SY-101 at the Hanford Site

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for management and storage of waste accumulated from the processing of defense reactor irradiated fuels for plutonium recovery at the Hanford Site. DOE is proposing to remove three level detectors from Tank 241-SY-101 and analyze the waste that is presently encrusted on the detectors. The proposed sampling is less intrusive than core sampling and will provide data regarding characterization of the crust to support future core sampling. The purpos… more

Geothermal development and environmental protection procedures

Description: The means of implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 in a Federal geothermal development program are discussed. Various geothermal development constraints are discussed, and the role of the Area Geothermal Supervisor (AGS) is outlined. Steps providing for prelease and postlease environmental protection are given. Suggested solutions to various problems arising from implementation of the Geothermal Steam Act and NEPA are summarized. Development of a mixed waste management facility at the Nevada Test Site

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) produces some radioactive low-level wastes (LLW) which contain hazardous components. By definition, the management of those mixed wastes (MW) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) requires compliance with US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state of Nevada regulations for hazardous wastes, and DOE regulations for LLW. Preparations for operation of a separate Mixed Waste Management Unit (MWMU) in the 1990s are underway. The 167-acre MWMU will be a part of the 7… more

The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory Site environmental report for calendar Year 1990

Description: The results of the various monitoring programs for 1990 indicate that most radioactivity from the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) operations could not be distinguished from worldwide fallout and natural radioactivity in the region surrounding the INEL Site. Although some radioactive materials were discharged during Site operations, concentrations and doses to the surrounding population were of no health consequence and were far less than State of Idaho and Federal health protection… more

Strategy for integrated CERCLA/NEPA risk assessments

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) has established a policy whereby, for remedial actions, the procedural and documentational requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) are integrated with those of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), as amended. However, the objectives of risk assessment under NEPA and CERCLA differ somewhat. Until its recent application at contaminated sites, NEPA analysis has typically been applied to impacts fr… more
