Open-cycle absorption cooling using packed-bed absorbent reconcentration

Description: The technical feasibility of a lithium chloride open-cycle absorption air conditioner using solar-heated air for reconcentration of the absorbent solution is examined. In contrast to a successfully operating Soviet design (in which absorbent reconcentration is accomplished by trickling the solution across a sloping black roof exposed to the sun), this study involves a packed-bed concentrator. Solar-heated air reconcentrates the solution by vaporizing water (the refrigerant) from the solution in… more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 4. Lake Central region

Description: The estimates of existing, incremental and the undeveloped hydropower potential for all states in the various regions of the country are presented. In the Lake Central region, the maximum physical potential for all sites exceeds 26,000 MW with an estimated average annual energy of more than 75,000 GWH. By comparison, these values represent about 5% of both the total potential capacity and hydroelectric energy estimated for the entire US. Of the total capacity estimated for the region, 2600 MW h… more

Multiobjective location planning for primary medical services in rural Iowa

Description: Developing location plans for primary medical services is a multiobjective location problem. In rural regions, plans must consider both the ability of a location to retain needed health care professionals and the accessibility of service center locations to the rural population. Using township level population data and a model of physician attrition, these objectives were incorporated into a location-allocation model and applied to rural Iowa.

Geothermal resources of the eastern United States

Description: Known and potential geothermal resources of the eastern United States are reported. The resources considered are exclusively hydrothermal, and the study was confined to the 35 states east of the Rocky Mountains, excluding the Dakotas. Resource definition in these areas is based entirely on data found in the literature and in the files of a number of state geological offices. The general geology of the eastern United States is outlined. Six relatively homogeneous eastern geologic regions are dis… more
