Dielectron production in p+Be and Ca+Ca collisions at the Bevalac

Description: Dielectron production has been measured in p+Be collisions at 1.0, 2.1 and 4.9 GeV, and in Ca+Ca at 1.0 and 2.0 GeV/A. The observation of a structure in the mass cross section at about two times the pion mass suggests that pion annihilation is the dominant production mechanism in p+Be above 2 GeV. Comparison of preliminary results from p+Be and Ca+Ca at 1 GeV/A is presented. 7 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

Continued development of an atmospheric monitoring mass spectrometry system - task 2.2. Topical report, January 1, 1995--December 31, 1995

Description: The objective of this project was the development of a mass spectrometric methodology applicable to the field determination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC`s), such as BTEX components (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes). A combination of chemical ionization, selective ion storage, and tandem mass spectrometry was planned to be employed with an ion trap mass spectrometry system. The Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) interface on the ion trap system was modified to permit … more

Mass spectrometric analytical services and research activities to support coal-liquid characterization research. Quarterly report, June 9, 1976--October 5, 1976. [10 refs]

Description: Low-resolution field ionization and high-resolution 70-eV electron-impact mass spectra data were obtained for 28 GPC fractions acquired from Bartlett, Kansas, heavy petroleum by members of the Separation and Characterization group at the Bartlesville Energy Research Center. This group was supplied with most-probable empirical formulas deduced from the high resolution electron-impact data. Analysis of the qualitative and quantitative analytical data previously obtained for GPC fractions from a S… more

Mass Spectrometric Analytical Services and Research Activities to Support Coal-Liquid Characterization Research. Annual Progress Report and Quarterly Report, March 9, 1977--June 8, 1977

Description: Ion-source temperature markedly affects the sensitivity for field ionization of saturated hydrocarbons relative to the sensitivity for FI of aromatic hydrocarbons. Using relative FI sensitivities determined for a number of organic compounds over a range of temperatures, excellent analytical data were obtained for a test mixture. Based upon these results field-ionization mass spectrometry constitutes an ideal technique for group-type analysis of (1) saturated hydrocarbons and (2) mixtures of sat… more

Searching for extensions to the standard model in rare kaon decays

Description: Small effects that are beyond the current standard models of physics are often signatures for new physics, revealing fields and mass scales far removed from contemporary experimental capabilities. This perspective motivates sensitive searches for rare decays of the kaon. The current status of these searches is reviewed, new results are presented, and progress in the near future is discussed. Opportunities for exciting physics research at a hadron facility are noted. 5 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Heavy Flavor Production and Top Quark Search at Hadron Colliders

Description: We review heavy flavor production at hadron colliders, with an eye towards the physics of the top quark. Motivation for existence of top, and current status of top search are reviewed. The physics of event simulation at hadron colliders is reviewed. We discuss characteristics of top quark events at p{bar p} colliders that may aid in distinguishing the top quark signal from Standard Model backgrounds, and illustrate various cuts which may be useful for top discovery. Top physics at hadron superc… more

Co-firing high sulfur coal with refuse derived fuels. Technical progress report No. 10, January 1997--March 1997

Description: In previous progress reports, we reported our study on the proposed mechanism for the formation of chlorinated organics during combustion, in which molecular chlorine is thought to be the key starting material. The objective of this quarter of study was to quantitatively test the inhibiting effect of SO{sub 2} on the formation of Cl{sub 2} during the combustion of MSW. The experiments were conducted under conditions close to those employed in the AFBC system. The principle analytical technique … more

Co-firing high sulfur coal with refuse derived fuels. Technical progress report No. 8, July 1996--August 1996

Description: The objective of this study was to examine the possible formation of chlorinated organic compounds during the combustion of blends of refuse derived fuels (RDF) and coal under conditions similar to those of an atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) system. A series of experiments were conducted using a TGA interfaced to FTIR. Additional experiments using a tube furnace preheated to AFBC operating temperatures were also conducted. The combustion products were cryogenically trapped and analy… more

pi. /sup -/p. -->. K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/n at 22 Gev/c and a Systematic Study of the 2/sup + +/ and 0/sup + +/ Meson Spectrum

Description: A coupled channel analysis has been carried out using amplitudes of the K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/ system produced in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/n at 22 Gev/c, which contained about 40,000 events in the low-t region (absolute value of t-tmin < 0.1 Gev/sup 2/). Reduction of multielement mass spectra

Description: Even though the spectra obtained by inductively coupled plasma source spectrometry (ICP-MS) are relatively simple, their interpretation can be complicated by the presence of molecular and isobaric interferants. To the extent that isotopic abundances are known and constant, one can treat observed spectra as sums of known components. A linear decomposition approach for determining the concentrations of the components in a spectrum and correctly propagating uncertainties is presented. This techniq… more

Ionization Thresholds of Small Carbon Clusters: Tunable VUVExperiments and Theory

Description: Small carbon clusters (Cn, n = 2-15) are produced in amolecular beam by pulsed laser vaporization and studied with vacuumultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry. The required VUVradiation in the 8-12 eV range is provided by the Advanced Light Source(ALS) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Mass spectra atvarious ionization energies reveal the qualitative relative abundances ofthe neutral carbon clusters produced. By far the most abundant species isC3. Using the tunability … more

The OZI rule: A unique selector of glueballs and hadron spectroscopy

Description: In the first part of this talk I have reviewed the history of the OZI rule. I then have shown how it is a unique selector glueballs and new quarks in hadron spectroscopy. In particular the only glueball candidates which cannot be explained by other hypotheses within QCD are the I{sup G}J{sup PC} = 0{sup +}2{sup ++} g{sub T}(2010), g{sub T},(2300) and g{sub T{double prime}}(2340) observed in the OZI suppressed reaction {pi}{sup {minus}} p {yields} {phi}{phi}n. Exclusive Initial-State-Radiation Production of the DD,D*D, and D*D* Systems

Description: We perform a study of the exclusive production of D{bar D}, D*{bar D}, and D*{bar D}* in initial-state-radiation events, from e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilations at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV, to search for charmonium and possible new resonances. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 384 fb{sup -1} and was recorded by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II storage rings. The D{bar D}, D*{bar D}, and D*{bar D}* mass spectra show clear evidence of several {psi} resonances.… more
