Asymmetry in the angular distribution of inclusive A baryons from e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilations at. sqrt. s = 29 GeV

Description: The forward-backward asymmetry A expected from the ..gamma.. - Z/sup 0/ interference term in the process e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. q anti q is observed in the lab production angular distribution of high momentum A baryons. The data were collected with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP and an integrated luminosity of 256 pb/sup -1/ at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV was used in the analysis. The asymmetry is seen to increase with the fractional energy z = 2E/..sqrt..s of the A due to the decreasing pres… more

A preliminary calculation of the background to t detection with tagged bs

Description: We investigate the utility of using tagged b jets as a probe for the top quark. We present an approximate calculation of the QCD rate at Tevatron energies for the production of six jets where one of the jets is required to contain a b quark, along with the corresponding rate involving an intermediate t{bar t} pair. With a minimal set of cuts, the signal-to-background is expected to be of order one-to-one, in contrast to the case where no jets are tagged, when the signal-to-background is at leas… more

Opening the high-energy frontier

Description: I review the scientific motivation for an experimental assault on the 1-TeV scale, elaborating the idea of technicolor as one interesting possibility for what may be found there. I then summarize some of the discovery possibilities opened by a high-luminosity, multi-TeV proton-proton collider. After a brief resume of the experimental environment anticipated at the SSC, I report on the status of the SSC R D effort and discuss the work to be carried out over the course of the next year. 37 refs.,… more

These measurements span approximately 7 orders of magnitude in cross section and contain jets up to 400 GeV in transverse energy and dijet masses up to 950 GeV. Comparisons have been made to QCD at both orders {alpha}{sub s}{sup 2} and {alpha}{sub s}{sup 3}. 8 refs., 9 figs.

Strangeness production in S + Pb and p + Pb collisions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon

Description: Results from CERN experiment NA36 are reported. Cross sections for the production of singly strange particles in the S+Pb and p+Pb reactions have been measured in the rapidity range 1.25<y<3.5 and for p[sub t]>0.2 GeV. A significant difference in the rapidity distributions of the lambda particles originating from these reactions suggests a fundamental difference in the strangeness production mechanism.

Methods of chemical analysis for organic waste constituents in radioactive materials: A literature review

Description: Most of the waste generated during the production of defense materials at Hanford is presently stored in 177 underground tanks. Because of the many waste treatment processes used at Hanford, the operations conducted to move and consolidate the waste, and the long-term storage conditions at elevated temperatures and radiolytic conditions, little is known about most of the organic constituents in the tanks. Organics are a factor in the production of hydrogen from storage tank 101-SY and represent… more

Top quark and SUSY (supersymmetric) searches at CDF

Description: Searches for the top quark in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV are described. The analyses are based on data with an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab in the 1988--1989 run. An upper limit on the t{bar t} cross section is obtained. The top quark with mass below 89 GeV/c{sup 2} is excluded at the 95% CL. Prospects for searches for the top quark in the future are presented. We also briefly present results on searches for super… more

Test of QED using a laser at the SLAC final focus test beam

Description: Experiment {number sign}144 at SLAC has three parts: the search for low-mass states excited in {gamma}{gamma} collisions and observed in pair decay, the study of nonlinear, nonperturbative QED in {gamma}e and {gamma}{gamma} collisions, and its possible applications to general purpose linear colliders. Such colliders could produce the full range of J{sub q{center dot}{center dot}{bar q}}/{sup PC} states, leptoquarks J{sub l{center dot}{center dot}{bar q}}/{sup PC}, the particles of supersymmetry… more

Charged particle transverse momentum spectra are measured, and p-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisional look rather similar. The hardening of the spectrum at high p/sub t/, previously observe… more
