Preliminary partial-wave analysis of the K sup + K sup 0 sub s. pi. sup minus system produced in 8 GeV/c K sup minus p interactions

Description: We have performed a partial-wave analysis of the K{sup +}K{sup 0}{sub s}{pi}{minus} system produced in the reaction K{sup {minus}}p {yields} K{sup +}K{sup 0}{sub s}{pi}{sup {minus}} {Lambda}/{Sigma} at 8 GeV/c. We present results of a preliminary analysis of approximately 2000 events in the K{sup {minus}}K{pi} mass range 1.24--1.64 GeV, with 0.0 < {minus}t < 1.4 GeV{sup 2}. In the 1.28 GeV mass region, we observe a small J{sup PG} = 0{sup {minus plus}} contribution but little indication of a 1{… more

A Search for Flavour Changing Neutral Current Processes in Decays of Charmed Mesons

Description: Neutral current interactions are known from studies of K meson decays to conserve flavor to a high precision. Although flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) are forbidden in the Weinberg-Salam model, many extensions of the Standard Model allow such processes. We present preliminary upper limits on FCNC-mediated decays of charmed particles, namely D/sup 0/ ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, D/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..mu..e and D/sup +/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup +/..mu..e.

Electron identification and implications in SSC detector design

Description: In the context of Heavy Higgs searches in the decay mode H {yields} ZZ {yields} 4e, electron identification issues and their implications on detector design are discussed (though many of the issues are valid for muon modes as well). The backgrounds considered seem manageable (a net rejection of 100 for combined electron ID and isolation cut is needed and seems fairly straightforward). A detector must have wide electron rapidity coverage {eta} < 2.5 to 3 and the ability to identify and measure a… more

Glueballs in the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n

Description: The BNL/CCNY group has observed and performed a partial wave analysis on 1203 (22 GeV) ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n events. The OZI suppression has been found to be almost completely broken down. The phi phi spectrum is found to be composed almost entirely of two new resonances, the g/sub T/(2160) and the g/sub T/(2320) with K/sup G/J/sup PC/ = 0/sup +/2/sup + +/. For g/sub T/ (2160), M = 2.16 +- 0.05 GeV, and GAMMA = 0.31 +- 0.07 GeV. For g/sub T/(2320), M = 2.32 +- 0.04, and GAMMA = 0.22 … more

Angular momentum and the collective modes excited in deep-inelastic processes and in fission. [288 MeV]

Description: The angular momentum effects in deep inelastic processes and fission were studied in the limit of statistical equilibrium. The model consists of two touching liquid drop spheres. Angular momentum fractionation was found to occur along the mass asymmetry coordinate. Thermal excitation of fragment spin is predicted to occur in the degrees of freedom which can bear angular momentum, like wriggling, tilting, bending, and twisting. 17 references.

Quark flavor identification in electron-positron annihilation

Description: The theoretical issues relevant to inclusive muon analysis, the MAC detector and its data flow structure, the identification of muons in hadronic events and the measurement of their momenta, and the selection of events so as to minimize background are described. Experimental results are presented describing the fragmentation of heavy quarks into hadrons, the semimuonic branching fractions of the heavy quarks, the asymmetry in the angular distribution of the heavy quarks, and the invariant mass … more

rho/sup 0/. omega. production in photon photon interactions

Description: The subject of this dissertation is the production of the rho/sup 0/..omega.. final state in photon photon interactions. The production of the rho/sup 0/..omega.. final state has been of interest primarily because of its similarity to the related process ..gamma gamma.. ..-->.. rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/. The cross section for rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ production demonstrates a peaking near threshold, the mechanism of which has been the subject of considerable speculation. The data sample used for the ana… more

Physics requirements for LHC/SSC calorimetry

Description: The goal of the next generation of collider detectors is to study the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking. The mass scale for this study is roughly 1 TeV. No matter what the details of the mechanism, one can be confident that new phenomena will occur, since weak interactions become strong, i.e., violate partial wave unitarity, at that mass scale. The partial wave amplitude for ee{yields} WW scattering is; ao{approximately}4{phi}/{alpha}{sub w}(M{sub w}/M){sup 2}, ao{approximately}1 if M {ap… more

Nucleon-antinucleon interaction

Description: The current status of our understanding of the low energy nucleon-antinucleon (N anti N) interaction is reviewed. We compare several phenomenological models which fit the available N anti N cross section data. The more realistic of these models employ an annihilation potential W(r) which is spin, isospin and energy dependent. The microscopic origins for these dependences are discussed in terms of quark rearrangement and annihilation processes. It is argued that the study of N anti N annihilatio… more

Weak interactions and gauge theories

Description: The status of the electroweak gauge theory, also known as quantum asthenodynamics (QAD), is examined. The major result is that the standard WS-GIM model describes the data well, although one should still look for signs of further complexity and better tests of its gauge theory aspect. A second important result is that the measured values of the three basic coupling constants of present-energy physics, g/sub s/, g, and ..sqrt..(5/3)g' of SU(3)/sub c/ x SU(2)/sub 2/ x U(1), are compatible with th… more

Strangeonium spectroscopy at the J//psi/: A comparison with kaon hadroproduction

Description: An experimental program to study strangeonium mesons produced in the decays of the J//psi/ at a /tau/-charm factory is compared with experiments on similar final states in kaon hadroproduction. The sample sizes and experimental performance required are discussed. The complementarity of different production modes and the importance of a broad programmatic approach to this physics are stressed. 21 refs., 15 figs., 1 tab.

Preliminary chemical analysis and biological testing of materials from the HRI catalytic two-stage liquefaction (CTSL) process. [Aliphatic hydrocarbons]

Description: Coal-derived materials from experimental runs of Hydrocarbon Research Incorporated's (HRI) catalytic two-stage liquefaction (CTSL) process were chemically characterized and screened for microbial mutagenicity. This process differs from two-stage coal liquefaction processes in that catalyst is used in both stages. Samples from both the first and second stages were class-fractionated by alumina adsorption chromatography. The fractions were analyzed by capillary column gas chromatography; gas chro… more

Double prompt photon production at high transverse momentum by /pi//sup /minus// on protons at 280 GeV/c

Description: A search for pairs of high p/sub T/ prompt photons produced in hydrogen by a 280 GeV/c incident /pi//sup /minus// beam has been carried out using a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter and the Omega spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Clear evidence for the existence of such events is found with a six standard deviation signal for p/sub T/ > 3.0 GeV/c. The cross sections are consistent with beyond leading order QCD calculations. Hadronic production of glueballs

Description: Local Gauge Invariance of SU(3)/sub c/ and color confinement would require that the only hadrons in the world be glueballs. However, when we add the quarks and obtain QCD it is experimentally clear that quark built states mask the expected glueballs. Thus discovery of glueballs is essential for the viability of QCD. Papers presented at the 1983 International Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics on the hadronic production of glueballs and searches for glueballs are reviewed. (WHK)
