Inclusive. eta. production in. tau. decays

Description: We have searched for inclusive eta production in tau decays using a sample of 2553 events of e{sup +}e{sup minus} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup minus} in the one-three topology. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at {radical}s = 29 GeV. Our results are based on an analysis of the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup minus} invariant mass spectrum to find the narrow peak resulting from the decay sequence {tau} {yields} {eta}x and {eta} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup minus}{pi}{degree}. Transverse momentum signatures for heavy Higgs bosons

Description: Heavy Higgs bosons produced by WW fusion at the SSC will have transverse mementum of order M/sub w/. The background due to q anti q ..-->.. ZZ will produce pairs with characteristically less transverse momentum. This provides a useful discriminator. It may be possible to tag the WW fusion events in a manner analogous to that used in two photon physics. 12 refs., 4 figs.

Production of chi mesons in 225 GeV/c. pi. /sup -/Be interactions

Description: Gamma rays associated with psi mesons have been studied in 225 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/Be interactions. The psi-..gamma.. mass spectrum shows an excess of 47 +- 11 events above background centered at 3.531 GeV/c/sup 2/ with an rms width of 22.4 MeV. Attributing this excess of events to the decay chi ..-->.. psi ..gamma.. implies that 38 +- 9 % of all psi mesons are produced by this mechanism. The experimental setup and results are detailed.

Study of exclusive central hadron production at the ISR as a search for gluonium states: the axial field spectrometer collaboration

Description: We present a preliminary report on a study of the exclusive reaction pp ..-->.. pph/sup +/h/sup -/ (h = ..pi..,K,p) at ..sqrt..s = 63 GeV and ..sqrt..s = 45 GeV, with h/sup +/ and h/sup -/ in the central region. This reaction has been suggested as a method of searching for gluonium states. The mass distributions in the ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ system appear to be identical at the two values of ..sqrt..s. They show a rapid order of magnitude decrease in cross-section at 1000 MeV/c/sup 2/ and 1… more

Searching for the Higgs in ep collisions at LEP/LHC

Description: We investigate the possibility to observe an intermediate mass Higgs in ep collisions at LEP/LHC. We find that such a particle can be observed once a reasonable level of flavor identification is available to separate efficiently the b{bar b} decay mode of the Higgs from most of the background. 18 refs., 11 figs., 7 tabs.

Single leptons from heavy quark production

Description: We consider the single lepton decay mode of heavy quarks as a signature of heavy quark pair production at the SSC. We find that events with multijets (n/sub jet/ greater than or equal to 3) and a single high p/sub T/ lepton are a good signal for heavy quark production.

Solar wind heavy ions from energetic coronal events

Description: Ions heavier than those of He can be resolved in the solar wind with electrostatic E/q analyzers when the local thermal temperatures are low. Ordinarily this condition prevails in the low speed solar wind found between high speed streams, i.e. the interstream, IS, solar wind. Various ions of O, Si and Fe are resolved in IS heavy ion spectra. Relative ion peak intensities indicate that the O ionization state is established in the IS coronal source regions at approx. 2.1 x 10/sup 6/K while the st… more

The Soudan 2 honeycomb calorimeter

Description: Soudan 2 is an 1100-ton honeycomb tracking calorimeter which is being constructed to search for nucleon decay. The detector consists of finely segmented iron instrumented with long drift tubes, and records three spatial coordinates and dE/dx for every gas crossing. Excellent event reconstruction capability, particle identification and muon sign and direction determination give superior rejection of the neutrino background to nucleon decay in many modes. The first 620 tons of Soudan 2 are now in… more

Bilocal field theory and a model for meson spectroscopy. Part I. Trident production by high energy charged particles on nuclei. Part II. [Harmonic oscillator quark model, radiative corrections, cross sections covariant perturbation theory, interference]

Description: Bilocal field theory for quark confinement is considered in a combination of bilocal field theory with the covariant harmonic oscillator quark model. The formalism can be viewed as a direct generalization of local Lagrangian field theory. Following the usual local theory, the variational principle is used to find the Euler - Lagrange equation for the bilocal field. For a special class of Lagrangian densities satisfying a boundary condition on the hypersurface of the internal domain which is cal… more

The production of J//psi/ and associated particles in the collision of 530 GeV/c protons and pions with nuclear targets

Description: We have studied the production of the J//psi/ and associated particles using the E672/E706 spectrometer at Fermilab. Preliminary results are presented from the first run in 1987--1988 with 530 GeV/c p//pi//sup +/ and /pi//sup /minus// beams on a variety of nuclear targets. The A-dependance of J//psi/ production with /pi//sup /minus// beam was found to agree with an A/sup /alpha// parametrization with /alpha/ = 0.85 /plus minus/ 0.06 for X/sub F/ > 0.1. We have found that (41 /plus minus/ 22)% o… more

Influence of water vapor and decomposition products on the positive- and negative-ion spectra of SF/sub 6/ corona

Description: We report on the positive- and negative-ion spectra obtained from in-situ mass spectrometric analyses of ions sampled from corona discharges in SF/sub 6/ at P = 6.7 kPa (50 Torr). In positive-ion spectra the presence of water vapor results in the formation of water cluster ions of the form H/sup +/(H/sub 2/O)/sub n/. The distribution of cluster sizes shifts to smaller clusters as the water vapor content decreases. In addition to the SF/sub 6/ fragment ions (SF/sub 5//sup +/, SF/sub 3//sup +/, a… more

H/sup -/ formation process in a multicusp ion source

Description: In recent years, H/sup -/ ions have been found important applications in high energy accelerators and in neutral beam heating of fusion plasmas. There are different techniques for producing the H/sup -/ or D/sup -/ ions. The most attractive scheme is the direct extraction of H/sup -/ ions from a hydrogen discharge. This technique requires no cesium and it utilizes the existing large area positive ion source technology. This paper investigates this techniques. 14 refs.

Production of lepton pairs at the LBL Bevelac

Description: We discuss the physics objectives for the DLS program with some emphasis on the possible use of dileptons as a probe of pion dynamics in nuclear matter. Data on p-Be reactions at 1-5 GeV and Ca-Ca at 1-2 A GeV are presented. The observation of a structure at about twice the pion mass in the e/sup +/e/sup /minus// invariant mass spectra above 2 GeV beam energy and the excitation function for the p-Be reaction suggest that pion annihilation is a significant dielectron source above 2 GeV. The diel… more
