State legislatures and energy policy in the Northeast: energy facility siting and legislative action

Description: At the Federal level, a vast array of bureaucratic and legislative institutions are presently immersed in various explorations of energy policy and its national ramifications. Almost each of the 50 states has Energy offices. One element of the institutional/political equation, however, often is missed in studies of energy policy: the state legislature. This institution may well be vitally important to formulation of broad policies, and certainly is critical to successful implementation of certa… more

National hydroelectric power resources study. Preliminary inventory of hydropower resources. Volume 6. Northeast region

Description: In the Northeast region, the physical potential for all sites exceeds 33,000 MW of capacity with an estimated average annual energy of some 153,000 GWH. By comparison, the available data represent about 6% of the total capacity and 11% of the hydroelectric energy potential estimated for the entire US. Of the total capacity estimated for the region, 6100 MW has been installed. The remainder (27,200 MW, excluding the undeveloped capacity in the New England States) is the maximum which could be de… more

Regional Issue Identification and Assessment program (RIIA). Environmental impacts and issues of the EIA MID-MID scenario: Federal Region III (mid-Atlantic)

Description: The EIA MID-MID scenario generally reinforces existing environmental concerns in the mid-Atlantic region. This results in part from the emphasis on existing rather than new energy technologies. The widespread public opposition to nuclear power in the region is likely to impede realization of the nuclear goals of the scenario. About 50% improvement in sulfur oxides air quality is projected for the region (all states), based on emissions reductions both within the region and in neighboring region… more

Description: The trommel screen located at the Baltimore County municipal solid waste processing plant operated by Teledyne National was evaluated for a 1-year period. This trommel is used to remove noncombustibles from refuse derived fuel (RDF) and thereby reduce ash content and increase heating value of the RDF. The trommel is 8 m in length, 3.7 m in diameter, has 32-mm holes, and can be operated at 6 to 12 rpm. Economic operating and maintenance data were collected for the period November 1980 through Oc… more

Measurement and Simulation of Source-Generated Halos in the University of Maryland Electron Ring (Umer)

Description: One of the areas of fundamental beam physics that have served as the rationale for recent research on UMER is the study of the generation and evolution of beam halos. Recent experiments and simulations have identified imperfections in the source geometry, particularly in the region near the emitter edge, as a significant potential source of halo particles. The edge-generated halo particles, both in the experiments and the simulations are found to pass through the center of the beam a short dist… more
