Exploding the myths about the fast breeder reactor

Description: This paper discusses the facts and figures about the effects of conservation policies, the benefits of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor demonstration plant, the feasibility of nuclear weapons manufacture from reactor-grade plutonium, diversion of plutonium from nuclear plants, radioactive waste disposal, and the toxicity of plutonium. The paper concludes that the U.S. is not proceeding with a high confidence strategy for breeder development because of a variety of false assumptions.

Performance of trim coils made by a novel method

Description: A precision, automated method of manufacturing trim coils based on printed circuit technology has been developed. Using computer experiments to construct a cheap substitute for an expensive simulation model

Description: There is widespread use of computer models as tools in scientific research. As surrogates for physical or behavioral systems, such models can be subjected to experimentation, the goal being to predict how the corresponding real system would behave under certain conditions. Preliminary evaluation of hermetic JT/LJT/R P connector socket contact design

Description: This report presents a precursory examination of a number of issues pertaining to socket contacts in hermetic connectors. The principal issues addressed are high-contact resistance and contact chatter (circuit discontinuities). Oxide cathode lifetime improvements at RTNS-II

Method for producing nuclear fuel

Description: Nuclear fuel is made by contacting an aqueous solution containing an actinide salt with an aqueous solution containing ammonium hydroxide, ammonium oxalate, or oxalic acid in an amount that will react with a fraction of the actinide salt to form a precipitate consisting of the hydroxide or oxalate of the actinide. A slurry consisting of the precipitate and solution containing the unreacted actinide salt is formed into drops which are gelled, calcined, and pressed to form pellets.

Improved methods to manufacture aluminum

Description: A low-temperature (750{degrees}C) process to produce aluminum, employing dimensionally-stable electrodes, was investigated under this contract. Tests were carried out at a 10-ampere scale to develop a nonconsumable anode and to evaluate certain cell operating parameters.
