Bumps and poles in the S-matrix: A systematic study of 0 sup ++ and 2 sup ++ mesons plus a molecule approach to the E(1420) in the K K. pi. system

Description: The goal of Hadron Spectroscopy is to find the spectrum of states formed by color singlet arrangements of quarks and gluons. Ideally these spectral states are associated with poles of the scattering matrix of hadrons which are the decay channels of the states. For example the {rho} meson is the lowest q{bar q} s-wave, spin one color singlet state and decays into {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. Since the {rho}decays in a relative p-wave, one finds the {rho} pole in the I = 1 p-wave {pi}{pi} phase shifts… more

Bose-Einstein correlations in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions

Description: The MARK II detector is used to study the Bose-Einstein correlation between pairs and triplets of charged pions produced in hadronic decays of the J)psi), the ..sqrt..s = 4 to 7 GeV continuum above the J)psi), two photon events at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV, and e/sup )plus/)e/sup )minus/) annihilation events at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV as a function of Q/sup 2/, the four-momentum transfer squared. After corrections for Coulomb effects and pion misidentification, we find a nearly full Bose-Einstein enhanceme… more

T,b, and new particle searches at p p colliders

Description: Experiments at the p{bar p} colliders at CERN and FNAL have an active program of heavy flavor physics. Recently, CDF at FNAL and UA1 at CERN have measured rare decays of the {Beta}{sup 0} {minus} {bar {Beta}}{sup 0} mixing. CDF has signals for {Beta}{sup {plus minus}} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup {plus minus}} and {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *0}. Both CDF and UA1 have set limits on the branching ratio of {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} and have measured {Beta}{sup 0} {minus… more

Strangeonia and kin; new results from kaon hadroproduction with LASS

Description: Recent results from a high statistics study of strangeonium mesons produced in LASS by an 11 GeV/c K{sup -} beam are reviewed and compared with the quark model. New data from a variety of final states (K*{ovr K*}, {phi}{phi}, {phi}{pi}{sup 0}) produced by hypercharge exchange are described, and compared with results from other hadroproduction modes and from J/{psi} decay. 17 refs., 12 figs.

Search for the. Lambda. sub b baryon at CDF

Description: The {Lambda}{sub b} baryon has been observed recently by UA1 through its decay {Lambda}{sub b} {yields} J/{psi}{Lambda}{degrees}. Although CDF finds twice as many J/{psi} and observes {Lambda}{degrees} decays, no evidence for an {Lambda}{sub b} signal is seen. The UA1 data supports a lower than expected production P{sub T} for the {Lambda}{sub b}, and therefore, a lower pion P{sub T}, below the observation threshold of CDF. This result suggests that UA1 and CDF are probably not inconsistent, bu… more

Review of the heavy ion physics sessions

Description: The parallel sessions on Heavy Ion Physics covered several areas of recent progress in characterizing the nuclear equation of state and the search for deconfined quark matter. Studies of systems from 1 to several hundred GeV/nucleon have been made in order to map the behavior of nuclear matter over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. We have also considered results from proton-nucleus reactions in the heavy ion physics discussions. This should help untangle nuclear effects'' due to the … more

Quark Matter '87: Concluding remarks

Description: This year marked the beginning of the experimental program at BNL and CERN to probe the properties of ultra dense hadronic matter and to search for the quark-gluon plasma phase of matter. Possible implications of the preliminary findings are discussed. Problems needing further theoretical and experimental study are pointed out. 50 refs.

D0 papers on B-physics submitted to DPF '96: b-quark inclusive cross sections and b anti-b correlations using dimuons from the D0 experiment; Single muon production in the forward region at [radical]s=1. 8 TEV; Rapidity dependence of the inclusive J[psi] production in the forward region [radical]s=1. 8 TEV; A search for b [r arrow] X[mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] and B[sup 0] [r arrow] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] decays in p anti-p collisions at [radical]s=1. 8 TEV

Description: Paper 1: Using dimuons collected with the D0 detector during the 1993--1995 Tevatron collider run, the authors have measured the b-quark cross section and b[anti b] correlations as given by the difference in azimuthal angle between the two muons. Both measurements agree with the NLO QCD predictions within experimental and theoretical errors. (Three other papers are included in this report.)

Relativistic heavy ions physics

Description: Central nuclear collisions at energies far above 1 GeV/nucleon may provide for conditions, where the transition from highly excited hadronic matter into quark matter or quark-gluon plasma can be probed. We review current ideas about the nature of, and signals for, this transition, and we discuss the (hadronic) string model approach to the nuclear collisions dynamics. At even higher energies in the TeV/nucleon range peripheral nuclear collisions may become a laboratory for electroweak physics at… more

J/. psi. and. Upsilon. production at CDF

Description: Characteristics of J/{psi} and {Upsilon} produced at the Tevatron and detected in the dimuon channel at CDF are reviewed. The masses of the J/{psi} and {Upsilon} are measured to be 3.096 {plus minus} 0.001 GeV/c{sup 2} and 9.469 {plus minus} 0.010 GeV/c{sup 2} respectively. These mass measurements are used to determine the systematic uncertainty on the momentum scale in the central tracking chamber. 2 refs., 14 figs.

Tau Charm Factory physics

Description: Tau Charm Factories proposed for future machines will provide powerful and unique facilities to study a variety of physics topics: the tau lepton, charm mesons, charmonium and the J/{psi} decays. These topics cover the physics of the members of the first and second quark doublets and the third lepton doublet. A workshop held at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center reviewed the physics, the machine and the detector for such a facility. In this paper, highlights of this meeting will be reviewed. We… more

Physics with nuclei at high energies

Description: Physics with nuclei at high energy is not reducible to a superposition of interactions involving individual nucleons; rather, qualitatively new phenomena show up. This is what one concludes from recent data on dilepton production off nuclei and on elastic proton-nucleus scattering. Furthermore, recent analyses of ion collisions at BNL and CERN reveal a number of non-conventional features. The relevant contributions to this Rencontre are summarized here. 37 refs., 16 figs.

Heavy ion interactions

Description: Nuclear Physics has come a long way since its inception 70 years ago. We have learned a great deal about nuclear structure and nuclear interactions -- and we have a lot to learn yet. Our understanding of the substructure of protons and neutrons in terms of their elementary' constituents has also evolved to the present level of QCD and the Standard Model. Early work on nuclear reactions involving light projectiles did a great deal in elucidating the characteristic nuclear symmetries and the dyna… more

Getting maximum information from incomplete data on B yields charmonium-K sub S decays
