Heavy-quark physics in quantum chromodynamics

Description: Heavy quarks can expose new symmetries and novel phenomena in QCD not apparent in ordinary hadronic systems. In these lectures I discuss the use of effective-Lagrangian and light-cone Fock methods to analyze exclusive heavy hadron decays such as {Upsilon} {yields} p{bar p} and B {yields} {pi}{pi}, and also to derive effective Schroedinger and Dirac equations for heavy quark systems. Two contributions to the heavy quark structure functions of the proton and other light hadrons are identified: an… more

Dynamical models of B yields. psi. /J K sub + *

Description: An issue of some interest in the general theory of CP violation on B meson decay is the relative admixture of even and odd final CP eigenstates in B {yields} {psi}/JK*{sub +}. For example, dominance of one sign of CP in this decay would increase the available modes for measuring the CP violation in the respective B meson decays in a beauty factory by a factor {approximately}2.5 and, hence, would decrease the luminosity requirements for such a factory from the CP violation perspective. Here, we … more

Top quark and SUSY (supersymmetric) searches at CDF

Description: Searches for the top quark in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV are described. The analyses are based on data with an integrated luminosity of 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab in the 1988--1989 run. An upper limit on the t{bar t} cross section is obtained. The top quark with mass below 89 GeV/c{sup 2} is excluded at the 95% CL. Prospects for searches for the top quark in the future are presented. We also briefly present results on searches for super… more

Hadronic production of J/[psi] at large [chi][sub F] in 800 GeV p+Cu and p+Be collisions

Description: The differential cross-section d[sigma]/dx[sub F] for J/[psi] production in 800 GeV proton-nucleus collisions has been measured in the kinematic range 0.30 [le] x[sub F] [le] 0.95 and x[sub F] [lt] p[perpendicular] [lt] 5 GeV through the decay mode J/[psi] [yields] [mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]]. The nuclear dependence of J/[psi] production over this range was measured using copper and beryllium targets. The differential cross sections are in good agreement with the predictions of the symbolical … more

Collision Dynamics and Particle Production in Relativistic Nucleus- Nucleus Collisions at CERN

Description: The possibility of forming a quark-gluon plasma is the primary motivation for studying nucleus-nucleus collisions at very high energies. Various signatures'' for the existence of a quark-gluon plasma in these collisions have been proposed. These include an enhancement in the production of strange particles, suppression of J/{Psi} production, observation of direct photons from the plasma, event-by-event fluctuations in the rapidity distributions of produced particles, and various other observabl… more

Recent heavy ion results from CERN and Brookhaven

Description: Results of the first round of ultrarelativistic heavy ion experiments at CERN and BROOKHAVEN are reviewed. The experiments measure global variables such as transverse energy and multiplicity to characterize the impact parameter of the collisions and compare with geometrical models of heavy ion collisions. Charged particle transverse momentum spectra are measured, and p-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisional look rather similar. The hardening of the spectrum at high p/sub t/, previously observe… more

Nuclear effects in J//psi/ and lepton-pair production

Description: High-energy processes in nuclear media provide important tests of quantum chromodynamics, since in principle one can use the nuclear environment to perturb and study the mechanisms involved in confinement and hadronization. In this talk several examples of nuclear effects in QCD will be discussed that affect the propagation and hadronization of quarks and gluons in nuclear matter. The issues include: possible signatures for quark-gluon plasma formation in heavy ion collisions, particularly J//p… more

A review of experimental progress in gluonia

Description: There has been considerable progress in gluonia investigations and their analysis. As requested by the Convenor, Rich Galik, I will cover the highlights of various conference papers and related work in an integrated manner which incorporates a review of the present state of glueballs (gluonia) to the extent space limitations allow. There are four general methods of searching for glueballs: J//psi/ radiative decay (iota, theta, xi(2.2)); OZI violating (g/sub T/, g/sub T/', g/sub T//double prime/… more

Topics in nuclear chromodynamics: Color transparency and hadronization in the nucleus

Description: The nucleus plays two complimentary roles in quantum chromodynamics: (1) A nuclear target can be used as a control medium or background field to modify or probe quark and gluon subprocesses. Some novel examples are color transparency, the predicted transparency of the nucleus to hadrons participating in high momentum transfer exclusive reactions, and formation zone phenomena, the absence of hard, collinear, target-induced radiation by a quark or gluon interacting in a high momentum transfer inc… more

Exotic mesons in /bar N/N annihilation

Description: We investigate the utility of the antinucleon-nucleon (/bar N/N) annihilation process as a means of producing exotic (non /bar Q/Q) mesons. Several examples are considered of J/sup ..pi..//sup C/ exotic formation in the /bar p/p ..-->.. ..pi..X reaction. We emphasize the usefulness of quantum number filtration, achieved by preparing the initial /bar p/p atom in tagged L = 0,1 states and focusing on selected exclusive final states. 36 refs., 4 tabs.

J/. psi. and. psi. prime production with 800 GeV protons

Description: The yields of J/{psi} and {psi}{prime} vector meson states have been measured for 800 GeV protons incident on deuterium, carbon, calcium, iron and tungsten targets. A depletion of the yield per nucleon from heavy nuclei is observed for both J/{psi} and {psi}{prime} production. This depletion exhibits a strong dependence on x{sub F} and p{sub t}. 24 refs., 3 figs.

Status Report on Fermilab Experiment E-760: A Study of Charmonium Produced by Proton-Antiproton Annihilation

Description: This was a status report on Fermilab experiment E-760 -- an experiment to study charmonium states by resonant formation in proton-antiproton annihilation. The experiment uses antiprotons circulating in the Fermilab antiproton-accumulator as the beam and an internal hydrogen gas-jet as the target. Data taking with the full complement of apparatus started in early July 1990.
