Confined vortex scrubber

Description: The program objective is to demonstrate efficient removal of fine particulates to sufficiently low levels to meet proposed small scale coal combustor emission standards. This is to be accomplished using a novel particulate removal device, the Confined Vortex Scrubber (CVS). The CVS consists of a cylindrical vortex chamber with tangential flue gas inlets. The clean gas exit is via tangent slots in a central tube. Liquid is introduced into the chamber and is confined with the vortex chamber by th… more

Rapid sulfur capture studies at high temperatures

Description: Determine conditions that would reproduce optimum sulfur capture ( super-equilibrium'') behavior. No attempt was made to extract kinetic data for calcination or sulfur capture, as might be done in a comprehensive study of sorbent behavior. While some interesting anomalies are present in the calcination data and in the limited surface area data, no attempt was made to pursue those issues. Since little sulfur capture was observed at operating conditions where super-equilibrium'' might be expected… more

Mechanistic and Kinetic Studies of High-Temperature Coal Gas Desulfurization Sorbents

Description: During this quarter work on zinc titanate materials as sorbents for fuel gas desulfurization continued. On the basis of the completed parametric studies of reduction and sulfidation (effects of H{sub 2}, H{sub 2}O, see quarterly reports {number sign}7, 8), ZnO and Zn-Ti-O materials were evaluated in terms of reduction-sulfidation kinetic differences. Comparative Arrhenius plots of the initial reduction and sulfidation rates are shown for the sorbents ZnO, Z2T-a (2Zn:1Ti) and Z2T3-a (2Zn:3Ti). T… more

Destruction of acid gas emissions

Description: A method of destroying NO{sub x} and SO{sub x} in a combustion gas is disclosed. The method includes generating active species by treating stable molecules in a high temperature plasma. Ammonia, methane, steam, hydrogen, nitrogen or a combustion of these gases can be selected as the stable molecules. The gases are subjected to plasma conditions sufficient to create free radicals, ions or excited atoms such as N, NH, NH{sub 2}, OH, CH and/or CH{sub 2}. These active species are injected into a co… more
