Alternative Cask Maintenance Facility concepts, an update and reassessment

Description: The results of three trade-off studies of alternative concepts for performing cask maintenance for Civilian Radioactive Waste Management System casks are presented. An earlier study resulted in a recommendation that a submerged pool concept for cask internal component removal be used in the design of a Cask Maintenance Facility. The first trade-off study resulted in confirming the previous recommendation that a submerged pool concept be used rather than an isolation cell; the basis for this con… more

Placement of the radiochemical processing plant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory into a safe standby condition

Description: Extensive upgrade, cleanup, and decontamination efforts are being conducted for appropriate areas in the Radiochemical Processing Plant (RPP) with the goal of achieving ''safe standby'' condition by the end of FY 1989. The ventilation system must maintain containment; thus, it is being upgraded via demolition and replacement of marginally adequate ductwork, fans, and control systems. Areas that are being decontaminated and stripped of various services (e.g., piping, ductwork, and process tanks)… more

Foam process for application of decontamination agents

Description: This paper presents the results and observations of a study performed by the authors to parametrically evaluate the performance characteristics of a foam process for application of decontamination agents. The initial tests were established to assess foam quality. Subsequent tests determined the ability of the foam as a carrier of chemical systems, and established system operating parameters. The technique was then applied in an actual decontamination task to verify effectiveness of these establ… more

Systematic approach to remote maintenance in the fuels and materials examination facility

Description: The Fuels and Materials Examination Facility (FMEF) is systematically analyzed from a remote maintenance standpoint using functional analysis methods. From the analysis the remote maintainability of equipment is ascertained, required tooling lists are formed, and maintenance downtimes are established. These techniques identify deficiencies or inefficiencies in the early design stage where changes have a minimum impact on cost. Special tooling and fixture requirements are minimized by standardiz… more

Hot cell for the synthesis of labelled organic compounds

Description: The design of a hot cell for use in labelling organic compounds is described. Versatility has been incorporated so that the cell can be used with a wide variety of organic syntheses as well as a large dynamic range of radioactivity (from ..mu..Ci to Ci levels). This is made possible by having the large work area easily accessible from the front which can be opened or closed and a small sliding lead glass window and master slave manipulator. A variety of syntheses setups which have been modified… more

Hot cell preparation of approved testing materials for the Materials Characterization Center

Description: It is important in nuclear waste repository development that testing be done with materials containing a radionuclide spectrum representative of actual wastes. To meet the need for such materials, the Materials Characterization Center (MCC) has prepared simulated high-level waste (HLW) glasses with radionuclides representative of about 10-, 300-, and 1000-year-old waste. A quantity of well characterized spent fuel also has been acquired for the same purpose. Glasses containing 10- and 300-year-… more

Method for estimating the challenge to an air-cleaning system resulting from an accidental explosive event

Description: A method is presented for determining the challenge to an air cleaning system resulting from an accidental explosion in a process cell of a fuel cycle facility. In many safety analyses, this quantity is estimated by multiplying the volume of the process cell by the maximum concentration of airborne material that is reasonably stable to agglomeration and sedimentation. Particle sizes are inferred from the assumption of concentration stability. The suggested method is based on extrapolation of da… more
