Fractional airborne release of strontium during the combustion of 30 percent normal tributyl phosphate in a kerosine-type diluent

Description: Engineering scale experiments were performed to determine the fractional airborne release of strontium during a fire involving a contaminated, flammable solvent. Earlier laboratory scale experiments using radioactive materials indicated that this release would be one percent or less. Twenty-five grams of strontium as strontium nitrate was added to 150 liters of 30% normal tributyl phosphate in a kerosine diluent, which was then burned in the ARHCO 224-T Fire Test Facility. Temperatures of 1000/… more

Toxic fumes from explosives: ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures

Description: The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and NO/sub 2/ fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau's large closed gallery facility (7.2 x 10/sup 4/ liter expansion chamber) and in the st… more
