Full-wave calculations in flux coordinates for toroidal geometry

Description: A new 2-D full-wave code, HYPERION, employing a poloidal and toroidal mode expansion and including the toroidal terms arising in the wave equation has been developed. It is based on the existing modules developed for the MHD stability codes and uses as input the tokamak equilibria calculated with the RSTEQ code. At present the plasma response is described by the collisionally broadened cold plasma conductivity. However, the code is written in straight field line coordinates, this permits the ac… more

Prediction of temperature increases in a salt repository expected from the storage of spent fuel or high-level waste

Description: Comparisons in temperature increases incurred from hypothetical storage of 133 MW of 10-year-old spent fuel (SF) or high-level waste (HLW) in underground salt formations have been made using the HEATING5 computer code. The comparisons are based on far-field homogenized models that cover areas of 65 and 25 sq miles for SF and HLW, respectively, and near-field unit-cell models covering respective areas of 610 ft/sup 2/ and 400 ft/sup 2/. Preliminary comparisons based on heat loads of 150 kW/acre … more

Investigation of Celotex trademark charring depths in the DT-18 shipping container

Description: Celotex {trademark}, the insulating material used between the outer and inner containers of the DT-18 shipping package, undergoes decomposition, combustion, or both when heated to temperatures exceeding 150{degrees}C. Several DT-18 packages that had previously undergone hypothetical thermal accident testing were opened and Celotex {trademark} charring depths ranging from {1/2} to 1 {1/2} in. were recorded. The majority of char depth data taken was between 3/4 and 1 {1/4} in. One-dimensional HEA… more

Solar Pilot Plant, Phase I. Preliminary design report. Volume II, Book 2. Central receiver optical model users manual. CDRL item 2. [HELIAKI code]

Description: HELIAKI is a FORTRAN computer program which simulates the optical/thermal performance of a central receiver solar thermal power plant for the dynamic conversion of solar-generated heat to electricity. The solar power plant which this program simulates consists of a field of individual sun tracking mirror units, or heliostats, redirecting sunlight into a cavity, called the receiver, mounted atop a tower. Comments on muon trapping. [HALO computer code]

Description: Muons that result from the collisions of protons in the ISABELLE beams with other nucleons introduce important background or signal for experiments. Their ability to pass through the conductors and steel of ISABELLE magnets results in complicated trajectories. Some oscillate about quasistable orbits and are called ''trapped.'' A number of typical trajectories were plotted, and flux estimates were made with a Monte Carlo program, HALO. Trapping tends to reduce shielding requi… more

Description: The production cross sections for the actinide products from /sup 136/Xe bombardments of /sup 249/Cf at energies 1.02, 1.09, and 1.16 times the Coulomb barrier were determined. Fractions of the individual actinide elements were chemically separated from recoil catcher foils. The production cross sections of the actinide products were determined by measuring the radiations emitted from the nuclides within the chemical fractions. The chemical separation techniques used in this work are described … more

Three-dimensional temperature history of a multipass filled weldment. Part 2. [HEATINGS]

Description: Computer simulation of the three-dimensional temperature history in a multipass filled weldment was attempted by modifying a transient heat transfer code, HEATING5. The model includes temperature-dependent physical parameters, radiation and convection heat losses, turbulent and laminar convection in the molten pool, and variable arc velocity, intensity, and weld geometry. The model requires approximately 28 CPU min to simulate one second of welding. 15 figures, 8 tables.

Analytical and experimental studies of heat pipe radiation cooling of hypersonic propulsion systems

Description: Preliminary, research-oriented, analytical and experimental studies were completed to assess the feasibility of using high-temperature heat pipes to cool hypersonic engine components. This new approach involves using heat pipes to transport heat away from the combustor, nozzle, or inlet regions, and to reject it to the environment by thermal radiation from an external heat pipe nacelle. For propulsion systems using heat pipe radiation cooling (HPRC), it is possible to continue to use hydrocarbo… more

System for histogram entry, retrieval, and plotting

Description: This manual describes the systems for producing histograms and dot plots that were designed for use in connection with the Q general-purpose data-acquisition system. These systems allow for the creation of histograms; the entry, retrieval, and plotting of data in the form of histograms; and the dynamic display of scatter plots as data are acquired. Although the systems are designed for use with Q, they can also be used as a part of other applications. 3 figures.

Analysis of depressurized loss-of-forced cooling transients by HERA

Description: The Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (MHTGR) is one of the next generation reactors, which has passive safety features. Among these safety features is the ability to withstand a depressurized, loss-of-forced cooling of the reactor without release of fission products from the primary containment. In order to assess the capability of the MHTGR to withstand this type of accident condition, the thermal behavior of the reactor core must be well understood. To accomplish this, we have empl… more

Comparison between calculation and measurement of energy deposited by 800 MeV protons

Description: The High Energy Transport Code, HETC, was obtained from the Radiation Shielding Information Center (RSIC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and altered as necessary to run on a CDC 7600 using the LTSS software in use at LLNL. HETC was then used to obtain calculated estimates of energy deposited, for comparison with a series of benchmark experiments done by LLNL. These experiments used proton beams of various energies incident on well-defined composite targets in good geometry. In this report, tw… more
