Preparation of oxide superconductors

Description: Preparation of bulk superconductors by cold pressing and sintering of metal oxides has been optimized in this study. A knowledge of phase behavior was used in developing a flux method for growing superconducting single crystals of yttrium and gadolinium based superconductors. Means of achieving single-phase, high-density samples of (Rare Earth)-Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ with optimal electronic properties are reviewed. 2 refs., 2 figs.

Radiation damage studies related to nuclear waste forms

Description: Much of the previously reported work on alpha radiation effects on crystalline phases of importance to nuclear waste forms has been derived from radiation effects studies of composite waste forms. In the present work, two single-phase crystalline materials, Gd/sub 2/Ti/sub 2/O/sub 7/ (pyrochlore) and CaZrTi/sub 2/O/sub 7/ (zirconolite), of relative importance to current waste forms were studied independently by doping with /sup 244/Cm at the 3 wt % level. Changes in the crystalline structure me… more

A 2-D imaging heat-flux gauge

Description: This report describes a new leadless two-dimensional imaging optical heat-flux gauge. The gauge is made by depositing arrays of thermorgraphic-phosphor (TP) spots onto the faces of a polymethylpentene is insulator. In the first section of the report, we describe several gauge configurations and their prototype realizations. A satisfactory configuration is an array of right triangles on each face that overlay to form squares when the gauge is viewed normal to the surface. The next section of the… more

Corrosion of 304L and 316 in gadolinium nitrate neutron poison solutions

Description: Pitting corrosion has occurred on AISI Type 304L stainless steel (304L) conductivity probes used to monitor liquid levels of gadolinium nitrate neutron poison solutions (GPS). An electrochemical and immersion test program has led to a better understanding of the cause of corrosion of 304L probes. Results indicate that the alternating voltage applied to the probes to monitor contact with solution is the primary factor in the corrosion of the probes. A chloride-containing dye and low pH also cont… more

Magnetic interactions in ternary superconductors

Description: Numerous ternary superconductors containing rare-earth atoms have recently been studied in order to investigate the magnetic interactions between the conduction electrons and local magnetic moments. These investigations range from the evaluation of the strength of spin-flip scattering of the conduction electrons off the rare-earth moments to the problem of the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order. Results are presented of studies on (Eu,Sn)Mo/sub 6/S/sub 8/, ErRh/sub 4/B/sub 4/, … more

Crystal Field Interaction and Magnetic Order in GdBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/

Description: We report experimental data on the crystal field interaction of Gd ions with their environment in Gd/sub x/Eu/1-x/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. The ESR spectrum and a Schotiky anomaly in the specific heat of dilute samples indicate the existence of a crystal field splitting of the /sup 8/S/sub 7/2/ ground state of the Gd/sup 3 +/ ions of about 1.5K. Since the single ion energies involved are of the same order of magnitude as the energies associated with the magnetic ordering of the Gd moments in … more

Fabrication of selenide segmented elements

Description: Processes are described for the fabrication of P- and N-type elements with high-efficiency selenide segments. Bonded hot and cold caps were attached to these elements with techniques based on processes developed in successful TRANSIT and Ring converter programs. An iron barrier was introduced in the segmented P-type element between the (Cu,Ag)/sub 2/Se and (Bi,Sb)/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ layers. This was made necessary by the known degradation in thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ con… more

Paraconductivity measurements and comparative studies of fluctuations in BiSrCaCuO, YBaCuO and YBaCuO with Gd substitution

Description: Information concerning the dimensionality of the superconductive fluctuations in the new high temperature superconductors can be derived from the excess conductivity (or paraconductivity) near the transition temperature. Here the lowering'' of the sample resistance in the same temperature regions is used for extraction of dimensionality and generally for comparative studies of the critical behaviour of three different samples such as YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}, Y{sub 0.8}Gd{sub 0.2}Ba{sub 2}Cu… more

Flux pinning and flux creep in neutron irradiated (Y,Gd)Ba sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub x

Description: Powder samples of Y{sub 0.9}Gd{sub 0.1}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} were irradiated with mixed spectrum ({approximately}50% E<0.5eV, 50% E>0.5eV) neutrons with most interactions expected to occur at the Gd site. As a function of fluence the samples showed increased ({approximately}X3-X8) magnetically measured critical current densities J{sub c} at low fluences, falling off at the highest values. An analysis of magnetic relaxation data, which allows for a nonlinear pinning potential U vs J relatio… more

Correlation of waterside corrosion and cladding microstructure in high-burnup fuel and gadolinia rods

Description: Waterside corrosion of the Zircaloy cladding has been examined in high-burnup fuel rods from several BWRs and PWRs, as well as in 3 wt % gadolinia burnable poison rods obtained from a BWR. The corrosion behavior of the high-burnup rods was then correlated with results from a microstructural characterization of the cladding by optical, scanning-electron, and transmission-electron microscopy (OM, SEM, and TEM). OM and SEM examination of the BWR fuel cladding showed both uniform and nodular oxide … more

Thermoelectric generator testing and RTG degradation mechanisms evaluation. Progress report No. 35

Description: The n-type selenide legs after 14,000 hours continue to show reasonable agreement with the 3M Co. published data. In the ingradient testing after 14,700 hours the n-legs show serious degradation in power to load. Weight loss measurements on the first samples of material produced by G.E. match the results previously obtained on R.C.A. material from the MHW program. The remaining MHW generator on test Q1-A has accumulated 22,519 hours and performance remains stable. The 18 couple modules S/N-1 an… more

Description: Thermal conductivity measurements of the p-type and n-type selenide alloys after 19,800 hours and 6,500 hours, respectively, continue to show good agreement with the 3M Co. published data. Ingradient testing of n-legs after 8900 hours show comparable performance to the reported 3M data. Ingradient testing of p-legs at accelerated test conditions has completed 5432 hours and performance shows reasonable correlation with accelerated temperature and current gradients. Chemical aspects of gadolinium nitrate as soluble nuclear poison in Savannah River Plant reactors

Description: The aqueous solution chemistry of gadolinium nitrate was studied to identify conditions that interfere with successful cleanup of gadolinium in Savannah River Plant reactor systems. Injecting a gadolinium nitrate solution into the D/sub 2/O coolant-moderator constitutes a supplementary mode of reactor shutdown. The resulting approximately 0.001M gadolinium nitrate solution is then deionized by recirculation through mixed-bed ion exchange resins before reactor operation is resumed.
