Conceptual Design of Electrical Balance of Plant for Advanced Battery Energy Storage Facility. Annual Report March 1979

Description: Large-scale efforts are in progress to develop advanced batteries for utility energy storage systems. Realization of the full benefits available from those systems requires development, not only of the batteries themselves, but also the ac/dc power converter, the bulk power interconnecting equipment, and the peripheral electric balance of plant equipment that integrate the battery/converter into a properly controlled and protected energy system. This study addresses these overall system aspects… more

Use of the Edmonds-Reilly Model to model energy-related greenhouse gas emissions

Description: The purpose of this paper is to document the results of our application of the Edmonds-Reilly Model (ERM) using several scenarios provided for an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) project comparing global models. Because the output of this exercise is data-rich, most of this exposition is in graphical form, with the narrative serving mainly as a roadmap for moving from one highlight to the next. The first two sections of the paper briefly describe the model and some o… more

Comparative evaluation of effects of ozonated and chlorinated thermal discharges on estuarine and freshwater organisms

Description: Although limited, the results of tests evaluating the comparative effects of chlorinated and ozonated thermal discharges on mummichog and white perch indicate that the biological effects of ozonation are much less severe than those of chlorination. The data also show white perch to be more sensitive than mummichog to the tested biocides. The relative effects of ozonation and chlorination in the behavioral studies were similar to those observed in the toxicity studies. Cough rates were higher in… more

Effects of atmospheric deposition of energy-related pollutants on water quality: a review and assessment

Description: The effects on surface-water quality of atmospheric pollutants that are generated during energy production are reviewed and evaluated. Atmospheric inputs from such sources to the aquatic environment may include trace elements, organic compounds, radionuclides, and acids. Combustion is the largest energy-related source of trace-element emissions to the atmosphere. This report reviews the nature of these emissions from coal-fired power plants and discusses their terrestrial and aquatic effects fo… more

Heliostat manufacturing cost analysis. Volume 1

Description: This study has two primary objectives. The first is to provide a detailed cost evaluation of the second generation of DOE heliostats, from which repowering heliostat designs are likely to be derived. A second objective is to provide an analytical foundation for the evaluation of futue heliostat designs. The approach taken for this study was to produce a cost estimate for the production of the McDonnell Douglas prototype design by generating estimates of the materials, labor, overhead, and facil… more

Assessment of feasibility, economics, and market potential for a molten salt system at 1000/sup 0/F reheat steam: feasibility, economics, and market potential

Description: As a result of the Advanced Central Receiver (ACR) Phase I systems studies, Martin-Marietta Corporation (MMC) developed a conceptual design employing 1050/sup 0/F molten salt and a 950/sup 0/F/950/sup 0/F reheat turbine. This concept appears to have the potential for providing higher steam conditions leading to higher performance and wider market application. This report presents the results of a preliminary investigation of the system to determine the feasibility of providing 1000/sup 0/F/1000… more

Preliminary investigations of the thermal energy grid concept

Description: This study examines, in a preliminary manner, the feasibility of the thermal grid concept. This concept essentially envisions the supply of heat to a long-distance transmission line from a dual-purpose nuclear or coal-fired power plant. The transmission line delivers heat to a subregion distribution network which delivers it to the consumer. District chilled water supply is also considered, using heat from the grid to power steam-turbine-driven water chillers. Candidate technologies for generat… more
