Description: The combination or integration of appliances for the economical recovery of energy which is normally wasted during the operation of heating systems, air conditioners, water heaters, stoves, clothes washers and driers, and refrigerators in homes and commercial buildings was studied. Impacts of the national energy programme on solar economics

Description: The National Energy Plan (NEP) sets as a goal the use of solar energy in two and a half million homes in 1985. A key provision of the NEP (as well as congressional alternatives) provides for the subsidization of solar equipment. Studies of evaporative and conventional cooling of an energy conserving California house

Description: For cooling a Sacramento, California home, (1) higher thermostat settings, (2) insulation (3) ''solar control'' window shades, and (4) the use of an evaporative cooler in the place of a vapor compression cycle air conditioner are studied. A computer program TWOZONE is used to evaluate the effect on energy consumption and peak power. It is calculated that the peak cooling load can be reduced by a factor of 5 or more and the total energy by a factor of 20 or more.

Low-cost site-assembled solar collector designs for use with heat pumps

Description: Four low cost solar collector designs have been produced for use in solar assisted heat pump systems. Three principles guided the design: the use of air as the heat transfer medium, the use of on-site easy-to-install construction rather than modularized prefabricated construction, and the collection of solar energy at reduced temperatures.

Monitoring of the performance of a solar heated and cooled apartment building. Final report

Effect of reduced boiler water temperature on cycle efficiency

Description: Tests were performed on a ''typical'' residential hot water boiler to evaluate the energy saving potential of reduced boiler water temperature. A significant reduction of annual fuel consumption was determined based on detailed efficiency measurements combined with the BNL Seasonal Performance Evaluation Computational Program. The energy saving has been attributed to reduced off-cycle heat losses resulting from the lower boiler operating temperature.

Open-cycle absorption cooling using packed-bed absorbent reconcentration

Description: The technical feasibility of a lithium chloride open-cycle absorption air conditioner using solar-heated air for reconcentration of the absorbent solution is examined. Unitary solar heating/cooling system package development. Progress report, June 1, 1977--January 31, 1978

Description: During this period, a 3 ton residential system hardware package has been developed and is operating in an Arkla owned solar house in Evansville. The Arkla tower-cooled WF36 chiller has been substituted for the evaporatively cooled chiller under development in the package. The residential software and manufacturing programs are underway. Only preliminary thinking has been done on the commercial 25 ton program which will soon be getting major attention.
