Microbial enhanced oil recovery research. Annex 5, Summary annual report, 1991--1992

Description: The surface active lipopeptide produced by Bacillus licheniformis JF-2 was isolated to near apparent homogeneity. NMR experiments revealed that this compound consists of a heptapeptide with an amino acid sequence similar to surfactin and a heterogeneous fatty acid consisting of the normal-, anteiso-, and iso- branched isomers. The surface activity of the B. licheniformis JF-2 surfactant was shown to depend on the presence of fermentation products and is strongly affected by the pH. Under condit… more

Improved Techniques for Fluid Diversion in Oil Recovery. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, October 1, 1993--December 31, 1993

Description: This three-year project has two general objectives. The first objective is to compare the effectiveness of gels in fluid diversion with those of other types of processes. Several different types of fluid-diversion processes will be compared, including those using gels, foams, emulsions, and particulates. The ultimate goals of these comparisons are to (1) establish which of these processes are most effective in a given application, and (2) determine whether aspects of one process can be combined… more

Scale-up of miscible flood processes

Description: The current project is a systematic research effort aimed at quantifying the interactions of physical mechanisms that control the scaling behavior of miscible floods. Displacement performance in a miscible flood is the result of a complex set of competing and interacting mechanisms. Phase behavior is of fundamental importance because the transfer of components from the oil to the injected fluid (as in most CO{sub 2} floods) or from the injected fluid to the oil (as in rich gas floods) can gener… more

Practical hot oiling and hot watering for paraffin control

Description: One of the common oil-field wellbore problems is paraffin deposition. Even though hot oiling or hot watering is usually the first method tried for removing paraffin, few operators appreciate the limitations of ``hot oiling`` and the potential for the fluid to aggravate well problems and cause formation damage. Field tests have shown that the chemical and thermal processes that occur during ``hot oiling`` are very complex and that there are significant variations in practices among operators. Ke… more

Cleanup/stimulation of a horizontal wellbore using propellants. Final report

Description: This report documents the stimulation/cleanup of a horizontal well bore (Wilson 25) using propellants. The Wilson 25 is a Bartlesville Sand well located in the Flatrock Field, Osage County, Oklahoma. The Wilson 25 was drilled to determine if horizontal drilling could be used as a means to economically recover primary oil that had been left in place in a mostly abandoned oil field because of the adverse effects of water coning. Pump testing of the Wilson 25 horizontal well bore before cleanup or… more

A CO{sub 2}-based analysis of a light-oil steamflood at NPR-1, Elk Hills, CA

Description: A steamdrive pilot was run on a light-oil reservoir at the Naval Petroleum Reserve No 1 (NPR1) in the Elk Hills oil field, Kern County, CA. The goal of this work was to establish a correlation between a documented growth in CO{sub 2} concentrations found in producing wells in the pilot area to the light-oil steamflood (LOSF); then to use a thermodynamic analysis of the expended energy to come up with an energy efficiency of the steamdrive.

Observations of broad-band micro-seisms during reservoir stimulation

Description: During hydrocarbon reservoir stimulation such as hydraulic fracturing, the cracking and slippage of the formation results in the emission of seismic energy. The objective of this study was to determine the properties of these induced micro-seisms. A hydraulic fracture experiment was performed in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado to induce and record micro-seismic events. The formation was subjected to four processes; breakdown/ballout, step-rate test, KCL mini-fracture, and linear-gel mini… more

Description: Dispersion of fluids flowing through porous media is an important phenomenon in miscible displacement. Much of the research involving dispersion and dispersivity as a property of reservoir rock has focused on miscible liquid-liquid displacement processes. This study addresses the measurement of dispersion in a gas-gas displacement system. The objectives of this study are: (1) to develop a method and set up an experimental apparatus to measure gas-gas dispersion in consolidated rocks.(2) to stud… more

Visualization experiments on steam injection in Hele-Shaw cells

Description: Flow visualization experiments have been successfully employed in reservoir engineering research for many years. They involve 2-D geometries in transparent Hele-Shaw cells and glass micromodels. Although much work has been done on immiscible flows (drainage or imbibition), visualization of steamfloods, which constitute a major part of current EOR methods, has not been attempted to data. In this paper, we present experimental results on steam injection in a transparent, pyrex glass Hele-Shaw cel… more

The epoxy adhesive formulation is one t… more

Visualization and simulation of bubble growth in pore networks

Description: Bubble nucleation and bubble growth in porous media is an important problem encountered in processes, such as pressure depletion and boiling. To understand its basic aspects, experiments and numerical simulations in micromodel geometries were undertaken. Experiments of bubble growth by pressure depletion were carried out in 2-D etched-glass micromodels and in Hele-Shaw cells. Nucleation of bubbles and the subsequent growth of gas clusters were visualized. Contrary to the bulk or to Hele-Shaw ce… more

Ultrasonic rate measurement of multiphase flow

Description: On of the most important tools in production logging and well testing is the downhole flowmeter. Unfortunately, existing tools are inaccurate outside of an idealized single phase flow, regime. Spinner tools are inaccurate at extremely high or low, flow rates and when the flow rate is variable. Radioactive tracer tools have similar inaccuracies and are extremely sensitive to the flow regime. Both tools completely fail in the presence of multiphase flow, whether gas/ oil, gas/water or fluid/solid… more
