Measurement of energy loss in the region of relativistic rise for particle identification

Description: The following boundary conditions are desirable for particle detectors providing momentum and mass measurement in a magnetic field. A multilayer drift chamber of the socalled ''bicycle'' type with a radius of 1.5 m is considered. The useful track length will be l/sub min/ = 1.3 m for a straight track at 90/sup 0/ to the beam axis. Two examples for possible subdivisions of this volume are chosen: (1) number of layers, n = 200 and thickness/layer, x = 6.5 mm; and (2) n = 56 and x = 23 mm. An anal… more

Performance and development of dE/dx counters

Description: The performance of existing or nearly completed detectors for particle identification by using the relativistic rise of energy loss will be discussed. Detailed analysis of systematic errors leads finally to large detector systems approaching the ultimate resolution as measured in small test devices. New methods for extracting the information from the counter with the potential of better particles separation than standard dE/dx will be presented. It includes very fine sampling, delta-ray clippin… more

D. phi. vertex drift chamber construction and test results

Description: A jet-cell based vertex chamber has been built for the D{O} experiment at Fermilab and operated in a test beam there. Low drift velocity and diffusion properties were achieved using CO{sub 2}(95%)-ethane(5%) at atmospheric pressure. The drift velocity is found to be consistent with (9.74+8.68( E -1.25)) {mu}m/nsec where E is the electric field strength in (kV/cm < E z 1.6 kV/cm.) An intrinsic spatial resolution of 60 {mu}m or better for drift distances greater than 2 mm is measured. The track p… more

Charged particle detector system for ISABELLE spectrometers

Description: A detector system combining the good time resolution and low dead time of PWC's and the good space resolution of drift chambers is proposed for use in ISABELLE spectrometers. Central to this detector is the development of two integrated electronic circuit systems. The detectors are described with special emphasis on the electronic systems. The detector system proposed will be capable of handling particle flux rates typical of conventional PWC's yet providing a spacial resolution of 100 ..mu..m.… more

Sensitive and simple method for measuring wire tensions

Description: Measuring tension of wires in drift chambers and multiwire proportional chambers after construction is an important process because sometimes wires get loose after soldering, crimping or glueing. One needs to sort out wires which have tensions below a required minimum value to prevent electrostatic instabilities. There have been several methods reported on this subject in which the wires were excited either with sinusoidal current under magnetic field or with sinusoidal voltage electrostaticall… more

Personal extrapolation of CDF test beam use to the SSC

Description: The author's personal experience in test beam usage at CDF is used to predict SSC needs at the point of turn-on. It is concluded that the test beam demand will reflect the scale of effort involved in SSC detectors rather than the total number of them. Provision for later expansion is recommended. It is also recommended that the test beam facilities, as well as detector electronics, should reflect the available dynamic range; particularly, a single high energy beam derived from the SSC could be … more

ACE: AMY CDC (Central Drift Chamber) Fast Track Finder

Description: The central drift chamber (CDC) of the AMY detector at the TRISTAN e/sup /+//e/sup /-// collider features its fine granularity and multi-band structure. The tracking software named ACE which makes the most of these features shows an excellent performance for reconstruction of high multiplicity events with highly collimated jets. The obtained reconstruction efficiency is 97% for the particles coming from within 5 cm of the primary vertex with p/sub t/ /approx gt/ 500 MeVc in the simulated hadron… more

Open and hidden charm muoproduction. [209 GeV]

Description: New results are presented on open and hidden charm and bottom production by 209-GeV muons interacting in a magnetized steel calorimeter. The upper limit on the production of T states by muons is sigma(..mu..N ..-->.. ..mu..UPSILONX)B(UPSILON ..-->.. ..mu mu..) < 22 x 10/sup -39/ cm/sup 2/ (90% confidence level). The distributions of elastically produced psi's are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) and disagree with psi dominance. From analysis of dimuon final states the cros… more

Tracking and vertex finding with drift chambers and neural networks

Description: Finding tracks, track vertices and event vertices with neural networks from drift chamber signals is discussed. Simulated feed-forward neural networks have been trained with back-propagation to give track parameters using Monte Carlo simulated tracks in one case and actual experimental data in another. Effects on network performance of limited weight resolution, noise and drift chamber resolution are given. Possible implementations in hardware are discussed. 7 refs., 10 figs.

Mark III results from SPEAR

Description: First results from the MARK III detector at SPEAR are presented based on 2.7 million J/psi decays. The eta/sub c/ is observed in three modes, J/psi ..-->.. ..gamma..eta/sub c/, (eta/sub c/ ..-->.. rho anti rho, eta..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, and phi phi). Using the phi phi mode, the eta/sub c/ spin-parity is determined to be 0/sup -/. Nuclear structure at intermediate energies

Description: The theme that unites the sometimes seemingly disparate experiments undertaken by the Bonner Lab Medium Energy Group is a determination to understand in detail the many facets and manifestations of the strong interaction, that which is now referred to as nonperturbative QCD. Whether we are investigating the question of just what does carry the spin of baryons, or the extent of the validity of the SU(6) wavefunctions for the excited hyperons (as will be measured in their radiative decays in our … more

Front-end data processing the SLD data acquisition system

Description: The data acquisition system for the SLD detector will make extensive use of parallel at the front-end level. Fastbus acquisition modules are being built with powerful processing capabilities for calibration, data reduction and further pre-processing of the large amount of analog data handled by each module. This paper describes the read-out electronics chain and data pre-processing system adapted for most of the detector channels, exemplified by the central drift chamber waveform digitization a… more

Second coordinate readout in drift chambers by charge division

Description: The drift time measurement and the charge division can be performed simultaneously on the same electrode (resistive anode) without affecting the accuracy of either measurement. It is shown that for the shortest measurement time there is an optimum value for the anode wire resistance. The signal requirement for a position uncertainty sigma less than or equal to 0.5% of the anode wire length is only 2.7 x 10/sup 6/ electron charges. The drift chamber can be operated in the linear mode and with ne… more

MPS II drift chamber system

Description: The MPS II detectors are narrow drift space chambers designed for high position resolution in a magnetic field and in a very high particle flux environment. Central to this implementation was the development of 3 multi-channel custom IC's and one multi-channel hybrid. The system is deadtimeless and requires no corrections on an anode-to-anode basis. Operational experience and relevance to ISABELLE detectors is discussed.
