Design requirements for uranium ion exchange from acidic solutions in a fluidized system

Description: A fluidized, countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines in support of its objective to help assure an adequate uranium supply for future national needs. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows are continuous, except for short periods when resin increments are withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl sulfate between a simulated acid-leach-uranium solution and a strong-base, i… more

A Small Scale Countercurrent Liquid-Liquid Extractor

Description: Details of design and operation are given for a laboratorysize, 20 - stage, multiple-contact, "unlimited-feed'', countercurrent-flow, liquid-liquid extractor. The apparatus consists mainly of glass parts that are joined by polyethylene tubing and are mounted in a steel cradle that can rotate on its horizontal axis. The reservoirs for feed liquids are an integral part of the assembly, and proper rotation of the assembly causes the flow of liquids to, through and from the extractor. Testing and d… more

Chemical Technology Division, Chemical Development Section C Progress Report for October-December 1961

Description: Recovery of Th (and U) from Granitic Rock. Recovery of Th by acid leaching ten addltlonal granite samples (36 to 82 ppm Th) from the Conway formation in N. H. ranged from about 50 to 85%, and averaged about 70%, Study of the effect of grind size on the recovery of Th from Conway and Plkes Peak granites showed no significant differences in the range minus 20 to minus 200 mesh. The Th concentration in a sized Conway granite sample was found to be much greater in the fine than in the coarse fracti… more

Heat Exchanger Design Options and Tritium Transport Study for the VHTR System

Description: This report presents the results of a study conducted to consider heat exchanger options and tritium transport in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant Project. The heat exchanger options include types, arrangements, channel patterns in printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHE), coolant flow direction, and pipe configuration in shell-and-tube designs. Study considerations include: three types of heat exchanger designs (PCHE, shell-and-tube, and helical… more

Innovative solar thermochemical water splitting.

Description: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is evaluating the potential of an innovative approach for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using two-step thermochemical cycles. Thermochemical cycles are heat engines that utilize high-temperature heat to produce chemical work. Like their mechanical work-producing counterparts, their efficiency depends on operating temperature and on the irreversibility of their internal processes. With this in mind, we have invented innovative design concepts for two… more

Temperature Profile Measurements in a Newly Constructed 30-Stage 5 cm Centrifugal Contactor pilot Plant

Description: An annular centrifugal contactor pilot plant incorporating 30 stages of commercial 5 cm CINC V-02 units has been built and operated at INL during the past year. The pilot plant includes an automated process control and data acquisitioning system. The primary purpose of the pilot plant is to evaluate the performance of a large number of inter-connected centrifugal contactors and obtain temperature profile measurements within a 30-stage cascade. Additional solvent extraction flowsheet testing usi… more

EERC Center for Biomass Utilization 2005

Description: Biomass utilization is one solution to our nation’s addiction to oil and fossil fuels. What is needed now is applied fundamental research that will cause economic technology development for the utilization of the diverse biomass resources in the United States. This Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) applied fundamental research project contributes to the development of economical biomass utilization for energy, transportation fuels, and marketable chemicals using biorefinery methods … more

Numerical simulation of the countercurrent flow in a gas centrifuge

Description: We present a finite difference method for the numerical simulation of the axisymmetric countercurrent flow in a gas centrifuge. A time-marching technique is used to relax an arbitrary initial condition to the desired steady-state solution. All boundary layers can be resolved, and nonlinear effects may be included. Numerical examples are presented. We conclude that this technique is capable of predicting accurately the performance of a wide variety of machines under all operating conditions of i… more

Description: The Office of Waste Processing, within the Office of Technology Innovation and Development, is funding the development of an enhanced solvent - also known as the next generation solvent (NGS) - for deployment at the Savannah River Site to remove cesium from High Level Waste. The technical effort is a collaborative effort between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). As part of the program, the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) has performed … more

Molten salt extraction of americium from molten plutonium metal

Description: The chemical basis for molten salt extraction separation of americium from plutonium is presented. The extraction factor relationship is used to quantify this liquid-liquid extraction (molten salt-molten metal) unit operation. The amount of salt required for an optimum process is an order of magnitude lower than the amount used previously in the production operation of the process.

Interfacial Area Transport and Regime Transition in Combinatorial Channels

Description: . This study investigates the geometric effects of 90-degree vertical elbows and flow configurations in two-phase flow. The study shows that the elbows make a significant effect on the transport characteristics of two-phase flow, which includes the changes in interfacial structures, bubble interaction mechanisms and flow regime transition. The effect of the elbows is characterized for global and local two-phase flow parameters. The global two-phase flow parameters include two-phase pressure, in… more

Lower Hybrid Heating and Current Drive on the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak

Description: On the Alcator C-Mod tokamak, lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) is being used to modify the current profile with the aim of obtaining advanced tokamak (AT) performance in plasmas with parameters similar to those that would be required on ITER. To date, power levels in excess of 1 MW at a frequency of 4.6 GHz have been coupled into a variety of plasmas. Experiments have established that LHCD on C-Mod behaves globally as predicted by theory. Bulk current drive efficiencies, n20IlhR/Plh ~ 0.25, in… more

Multi-component gas transport in CANDU fuel rods during severe accidents.

Description: The multi-component transport of steam, hydrogen and stable fission gas in the fuel-to-clad gap of defective CANDU fuel rods, during severe accident conditions, is investigated. Based on a general Stefan-Maxwell treatment this work considers how incoming steam will diffuse into a breached rod against a counter-current flow of non-condensable fission gases and out-flowing hydrogen that is produced from the internal reaction of steam with the Zircaloy cladding or urania. The ability of the oxidiz… more

Development of a Continuous Counter-Current High Efficiency Gas-Solids Contactor

Description: Experimental conversions of UO/sub 3/ to UO /sub 2/ to UF/sub 4/ in batch fluidized bed pilot-scale contactor have demonstrated that conversion rates approaching those predicted from basic kinetic data are attainable. Further studies with fluidized beds in columns incorporating a very slight taper show that solids mixing with attendant product contamination is reduced by a factor of ten as a direct result of the taper. Experiments with tapered fluidlized beds made the design of continuous (as o… more

Consecutive extraction of U(IV) and Pu(III) or (IV) by 0.1 to 0 3 M primary amine in hydrocarbon-- alcohol diluent appeared promising, and chemical flowsheets were demonstrated in laboratoryscale continuous countercurrent extraction. Extraction of U(VI) with a dialkylphosphoric acid appeared promising when plutonium recovery is not needed. R… more
