Structural analysis of TFTR toroidal field coil conceptual design

Description: The conceptual design evaluation of the V-shaped toroidal field coils on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor has been performed by detailed structural analysis with the finite element method. The innovation provided by this design and verified in this work is the capability to support toroidal field loads while simultaneously performing the function of twist restraint against the device axial torques resulting from the vertical field loads. The evaluations made for the conceptual design provide pre… more

Forbidden coupling and inhibited decay: a study of disconnection

Description: An attempt is made to correlate deviation from ideal mixing mass formula, high energy scattering behavior, and violation of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule. Pole or cut nature of the intermediary is discussed. Timelike and spacelike forbidden communications are compared. Off-shell effects are examined. Some problems for phenomenology are revealed.

Transmissivity iterative calculation routine: theory and numerical implementation

Description: A computer routine, the Transmissivity Iterative Routine (TIR), has been developed for calculating the hydraulic conductivity distribution in highly heterogeneous aquifers where characterization by field measurement methods alone would be prohibitive in cost. The routine yields the two-dimensional distribution of hydraulic conductivity averaged over the aquifer thickness. The agreement between the calculated and actual average conductivity is dependent on the degree to which the groundwater sys… more

Laser irradiation of thin plastic targets with a 10. 6. mu. m CO/sub 2/ laser

Description: Polyethylene foils and parylene disks 5 to 10 ..mu..m thick have been irradiated by CO/sub 2/ laser pulses focused to flux levels in the 10/sup 13/ to 10/sup 14/ W/cm/sup 2/ range. The facility and the results obtained on these experiments are compared to similar targets hit with 1.06 ..mu.. pulses of like intensity. A CO/sub 2/ laser system, ''Valkyrie,'' fabricated from commercially available components was assembled for these experiments.

Pseudoscalar mixing effects on hadronic and photonic decays of the new mesons

Description: The mixing of eta, eta', and eta/sub c/ is calculated in a cylinder dominated model and the results are applied to the hadronic decay psi' ..-->.. psi eta and a number of photonic decays, using vector meson dominance. The results are in excellent agreement with all experimental data.

Numerical studies of nonlinear evolution of kink modes in tokamaks

Description: A set of numerical techniques for investigating the full nonlinear unstable behavior of low-..beta.. kink modes of given helical symmetry in tokamaks is presented. Uniform current density plasmas display complicated deformations including the formation of large vacuum bubbles provided that the safety factor q is sufficiently close to integral. Fairly large m = 1 deformations, but not bubble formation, persist for a plasma with a parabolic current density profile (and hence shear). Deformations … more

Engineering hot channel factors for mixed carbide and nitride fuels in 5000 MWt LMFBRs

Description: This report presents the engineering hot channel factors for the fuel temperature corresponding to the breeding performance and pin diameter optimization studies for mixed carbide and nitride fuels in LMFBRs. A discussion of the methodology employed and the rationale behind the selection of each contributor to the hot channel factors are also included.

Application of composite bearingless rotor concept to wind turbine rotor. Progress report, June 3, 1975--October 31, 1975

Description: The objective of the one year program is to explore the feasibility of the Composite Bearingless Rotor (CBR) for use as a wind turbine and to evaluate several automatic control concepts designed to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness. The program consists of the design of a full-scale wind turbine, the design and fabrication of a dynamically scaled model, wind tunnel experiments, and analytical studies. To date, the design work has been completed, the model wind turbine support tower has … more

Advanced thermionic energy conversion. Progress report, September 1, 1974--August 31, 1975

Description: During this reporting period the characteristics of several types of advanced thermionic energy converters were explored, both analytically and experimentally. Two new converter test vehicles were developed and two test stands and a controlled-atmosphere converter processing station were completed for use in the experimental program. Our previous understanding of pulsed converters was confirmed experimentally, and the work of earlier investigators concerning the inert gas ignited triode was sub… more

Feasibility investigation of the giromill for generation of electrical power

Description: The cyclogiro computer program, obtained from Prof. H. C. Larsen of the United States Air Force Institute of Technology, was modified to incorporate computation of blade loads for the normal operating and gust loading conditions. The program was also changed to allow computation of the effects of smoothing the blade rock angles in the region where they experienced large oscillations due to passing through a vortex shed by the previous blade. Using this program the various effects of rotor geome… more

Magnetic field from arbitrarily shaped flat coils with filamentary, ribbon, and rectangular cross sections

Description: This report describes the derivation of three groups of equations: (1) Field components from an arbitrarily shaped filament lying in a plane. (2) Field components from an arbitrarily shaped ribbon of infinitesimal thickness with center line lying in a plane. (3) Field components from an arbitrarily shaped bar of rectangular cross section with its center line lying in a plane. In all three cases analytical expressions for the field components were found for an infinitesimal element of the cross … more

Experiment DTA report for semiscale transparent vessel countercurrent flow tests

Description: Steady state air-water tests were performed as part of the Semiscale Blowdown and Emergency Core Cooling (ECC) Project to investigate downcomer countercurrent flow and downcomer bypass flow phenomena. These tests were performed in a plexiglass representation of the Semiscale pressure vessel which allowed changes to be madein the geometry of the upper annulus and downcomer for the purpose of investigating the sensitivity of downcomer and bypass flow to changes in system geometry. Tests were also… more

Orthogonal conductivity of a toroidal plasma

Description: The orthogonal conductivity of a toroidal plasma is calculated in the fluid regime. If the damping time for toroidally directed angular momentum is tau/sub N/, the orthogonal conductivity is shown to be sigma/sub perpendicular to/ = (rhoc$sup 2$/ B$sup 2$/sub p/)/tau/sub n/ for large tau/sub N/. Here rho is the mass density, c the speed of light and B/sub p/ the poloidal component of the magnetic field. For large tau/sub N/, the flow induced by the orthogonal electric field is almost purely tor… more
