A sendmail. cf scheme for a large network

Description: Like most large networked sites our users depend heavily on the electronic mail system for both internal and off-site communications. Unfortunately the sendmail.cf file, which is used to control the behavior of the sendmail program, is somewhat cryptic and difficult to decipher for the neophyte. So, on one hand you have a highly visible, frequently used utility, and on the other hand a not-so-easily acquired system administration forte. Here is the sendmail topology of our site, what premises w… more

PHYSLIB: A C++ tensor class library

Description: C++ is the first object-oriented programming language which produces sufficiently efficient code for consideration in computation-intensive physics and engineering applications. In addition, the increasing availability of massively parallel architectures requires novel programming techniques which may prove to be relatively easy to implement in C++. For these reasons, Division 1541 at Sandia National Laboratories is devoting considerable resources to the development of C++ libraries. This docum… more

Secure resource management: Specifying and testing secure operating systems

Description: Much work has been devoted to methods for reasoning about the specifications of operating system specifications, the goal being to develop specifications for an operating system that are verified to be secure. Before the verification should be attempted, the specifications should be tested. This paper presents tools that can assist in the security testing of specifications. The first tool is based on the final Algebra Specification and Execution (FASE) system, and would be used to test specific… more

First Priority, an expert system for prioritizing

Description: Prioritizing lists of diverse entities such as projects, tasks, documents, recommendations or physical locations is a necessary part of business at DOE facilities. A key issue is whether or not this necessary and problematic activity of prioritizing is performed in a methodical, defensible and traceable manner, especially when the goals are hard to compare and measure. Sound methods of prioritizing are often not employed because of their complexity or difficulty in implementation. To overcome t… more

Parallel programming with PCN

Description: PCN is a system for developing and executing parallel programs. It comprises a high-level programming language, tools for developing and debugging programs in this language, and interfaces to Fortran and C that allow the reuse of existing code in multilingual parallel programs. Programs developed using PCN are portable across many different workstations, networks, and parallel computers. This document provides all the information required to develop parallel programs with the PCN programming sy… more

PHIGS PLUS for scientific graphics

Description: This paper gives a brief overview of the use of computer graphics standards in the scientific community. It particularly details how how PHIGS PLUS meets the needs of users at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Although standards for computer graphics have improved substantially over the past decade, their acceptance in the scientific community has been slow. As the use and diversity of computers has increased, the scientific graphics libraries have not been able to keep pace with the … more

ALECS: assembly language extensions and control structures

Description: ALECS is an assembly language preprocessor allowing the use of structured programming techniques in MACRO-11 code. Programs are written using standard control structures with normal MACRO-11 code embedded as needed. The ALECS task is used to translate the source to pure MACRO-11 source file which is then submitted to the assembler. ALECS also produces a structured source listing showing the true logical flow of code. ALECS has been used for short subroutines as well as RSX-11M I/0 drivers and a… more

UNIX code management and distribution

Description: We describe a code management and distribution system based on tools freely available for the UNIX systems. At the master site, version control is managed with CVS, which is a layer on top of RCS, and distribution is done via NFS mounted file systems. At remote sites, small modifications to CVS provide for interactive transactions with the CVS system at the master site such that remote developers are true peers in the code development process.

Computing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a general matrix by reduction to general tridiagonal form

Description: This paper describes programs to reduce a nonsymmetric matrix to tridiagonal form, compute the eigenvalues of the tridiagonal matrix, improve the accuracy of an eigenvalue, and compute the corresponding eigenvector. 8 refs., 3 tabs.

Graph Structure Model

Description: The Graph Structure (GRPHSTRUC) Model is a software system tool specifically developed to be used by a computer security analyst to study the security and analyze the design of computer networks. However, any system that can be characterized and represented by a graph structure could employ GRPHSTRUC with some minor system modifications. The GRPHSTRUC model is a knowledge-based expert system using icons and object-oriented programming methodologies. GRPHSTRUC has been designed and developed to … more

Bulletin: An authoring and change control tool

Description: The Computer Documentation Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory plays an important role in the monthly change control process by documenting network component changes in a publication called the ICN Change Bulletin. BULLETIN is a menu-driven utility used by programmers and computer documentation writers to create articles for the ICN Change Bulletin, which is published in both hardcopy (printed) and softcopy (electronic) forms. BULLETIN also provides information used by other change control … more

A new PICL trace file format

Description: A trace file format is described that will be used in future releases of the Portable Instrumented Communication Library (PICL) and ParaGraph. The new format provides improved support for tracing and profiling PICL communication primitives and user-defined events. The new format is also easily extended and may be useful in other instrumentation packages and performance visualization tools.

Continuous stratified sampling of in-process inventory

Description: A stratified sampling plan has been developed to replace a yearly physical inventory of several thousand products with wide variation in dollar value. The results of a recent physical inventory were reviewed and used to stratify the total population and arrive at starting values for a sampling process. Improvements in sampling efficiency led to the use of Neyman sampling theory. Formulas were developed sequentially for application to a computerized system. Various sampling rates were tested by … more

QTA (Questionnaire-Task-Analysis): An electronic tool for job/task analysis

Description: When a computer-based training (CBT) package is part of a performance-based training system, a job/task analysis (JTA) to identify and document training requirements is the first step. To identify and document training requirements, performance-based training mandates that a job/task analysis be completed. To simplify the task of performing the job/task analysis for the control room operators at the plutonium facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory, we wrote the MODULA-2 program QUESTIONNAIR… more

Basic OSF/Motif programming and applications

Description: When users refer to Motif, they are usually talking about mwm, the window manager. However, when programmers mention Motif they are usually discussing the programming toolkit. This toolkit is used to develop new or modify existing applications. In this presentation, the term Motif will refer to the toolkit. Motif comes with a number of features that help users effectively use the applications built with it. The term look and feel may be overused; nonetheless, a consistent and well designed look… more

LAVA/CIS Version 2. 0: A software system for vulnerability and risk assessment

Description: LAVA (the Los Alamos Vulnerability/Risk Assessment system) is an original systematic approach to risk assessment developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is an alternative to existing quantitative methods, providing an approach that is both objective and subjective, and producing results that are both quantitative and qualitative. LAVA was developed as a tool to help satisfy federal requirements for periodic vulnerability and risk assessments of a variety of systems and to satisfy th… more
