End moldings for cable dielectrics

Description: End moldings for high-voltage cables are described wherein the dielectric insulator of the cable is heated and molded to conform to a desired shape. As a consequence, high quality substantially bubble- free cable connectors suitable for mating to premanufactured fittings are made. Disclosed are a method for making the cable connectors either in the field or in a factory, molds suitable for use with the method, and the molded cable connectors, themselves.

Ringing in the pulse response of long and wideband coaxial transmission lines due to group delay dispersion

Description: In particle accelerators coaxial cables are commonly used to transmit wideband beam signals covering many decades of frequencies over long distances. Those transmission lines often have a corrugated outer and/or inner conductor. This particular construction exhibits a significant amount of frequency dependent group delay variation. A comparison of simulations based on theoretical models, numerical simulations and S{sub 21} network analyzer measurements up to 2.5 GHz is presented. It is shown ho… more

Coaxial wire impedance measurements of BPM buttons for the PEP-II B- factory

Description: The coaxial wire impedance measurement uses a conducting rod placed along the beam axis in the vacuum chamber, forming the center conductor in a coaxial line system. Tapers at either end of this section allow for smooth impedance transformation from the 50{Omega} lines used in common microwave measurement equipment, to the characteristic impedance of the vacuum chamber and center conductor, typically around 200{Omega}. RF and microwave absorptive material placed in the ends of the vacuum chambe… more

The CEBAF Injector RF Distribution and Bunch-Length Measurement System

Description: The CEBAF injector includes 22 RF control modules which require an intermediate frequency (IF) of 70 MHz and a local oscillator (LO) frequency of 1427 MHz. A STAR network distributes the signals over coaxial cables that are of equal length so that all systems see the same phase drifts due to ambient temperature changes. To obtain the signal levels required by the individual RF control modules, amplifiers are used in both the LO and IF distribution. Temperature-dependent phase drifts associated … more

STUDY OF THE RHIC BPM SMA CONNECTOR FAILURE PROBLEM

Description: About 730 BPMs are mounted on the RHIC CQS and Triplet super-conducting magnets. Semi-rigid coaxial cables are used to bring the electrical signal from the BPM feedthroughs to the outside flanges. at the ambient temperature. Every year around 10 cables will lose their signals during the operation. The connection usually failed at the warm end of the cable. The problems were either the solder joint failed or the center conductor retracted out of the SMA connector. Finite element analyses were pe… more

Measurements on a FET based 1 MHz, 10 kV pulse generator

Description: A prototype pulser, which incorporates thirty-two 1 kV Field-Effect Transistor (FET) modules, has been built and tested at TRIUMF. The pulser has been developed for application in a scheme for pulsed extraction from the TRIUMF 500 MeV cyclotron. Deflection of the beam will be provided by an electric field between a set of 1 in long deflector plates. The pulser generates a continuous, unipolar, pulse train at a fundamental frequency of approximately 1 MHz and a magnitude of 10 kV. The pulses hav… more

Designs for a high power superconducting delay line

Description: Potential designs for a high power superconducting delay line of approximately 10 microsecs duration are described. The transmitted signal should have low dispersion and little attenuation to recapture the original signal. Such demands cannot be met using conventional metal conductors. This paper outlines a proposal for a new transmission line design using low temperature superconducting material which meets system specifications. The 25 omega line is designed to carry pulsed signals with an ap… more

The LANL P14 temperature control electronics for the waveshaping filter

Description: The Pulse Waveform Standard is designed to be operated in a laboratory environment in which the temperature is controlled and maintained at 22 C. The temperature controller of the Pulse Waveform Standard must be set to operate at 30 C. This report gives information for calibrating and maintaining the temperature control electronics. Long term stability of the NBS design Debye dielectric coaxial line waveshaping filter

Description: By means of analysis of NBS laboratory notebooks for the period of 1976--1982 in conjunction with recent LANL P14 measurements it is shown that the Model 100-1, S/N 1 Debye Coaxial Line is stable. From the date of its inception in July 1977 to the present, at a temperature of 30 C the transition duration of the filter insertion step response has remained a 125.8 ps while the relative dielectric constant has remained at 2.7. Also, capacitance measurements on the NBS--held Model 100-2, S/N 2 have… more

High-gradient compact linear accelerator

Description: A high-gradient linear accelerator comprises a solid-state stack in a vacuum of five sets of disc-shaped Blumlein modules each having a center hole through which particles are sequentially accelerated. Each Blumlein module is a sandwich of two outer conductive plates that bracket an inner conductive plate positioned between two dielectric plates with different thicknesses and dielectric constants. A third dielectric core in the shape of a hollow cylinder forms a casing down the series of center… more

Argon Test Cell Coaxial Cable Feed Through Connector Testing

Description: Within each cryostat their will exist three Argon Monitoring Boxes. Located at different elevations these boxes are responsible for measuring the relative 'quality' of the Argon as far as it's ability to transfer electrons without recombination. Each box requires three miniature coaxial cables to provide a signal to the outside world. These cables are shielded in groups of three. Each cryostat requires three of these grouped cables which must pass through some form of feedthrough located in the… more

PBFA II-Z: A 20-MA driver for z-pinch experiments

Description: Sandia is modifying the PBFA II accelerator into a dual use facility. While maintaining the present ion-beam capability, we are developing a long-pulse, high-current operating mode for magnetically-driven implosions. This option, called PBFA II-Z, will require new water transmission lines, a new insulator stack, and new magnetically-insulated transmission lines (MITLs). Each of the existing 36, coaxial water pulse-forming sections will couple to a 4.5-{Omega}, bi-plate water-transmission line. … more

Description: Pulsed Arrested Spark Discharge (PASD) is a Sandia National Laboratories Patented, non-destructive wiring system diagnostic that has been developed to detect defects in aging wiring systems in the commercial aircraft fleet. PASD was previously demonstrated on relatively controlled geometry wiring such as coaxial cables and shielded twisted-pair wiring through a contract with the U.S. navy and is discussed in a Sandia National Laboratories report, SAND2001-3225 ''Pulsed Arrested Spark Discharge … more
