Economics of geothermal direct-heat applications

Description: Cost and production data from five commercial-scale geothermal direct-heat application projects are reviewed. Unit costs of geothermal energy under a variety of assumptions about production levels, costs, tax treatment, financial structure, and cost of capital are calculated and compared to prices of conventional fuels which would be displaced over the life of a geothermal project. Geothermal energy is found to be less costly than distillate fuel oil for all cases examined and cheaper than natu… more

District heating and cooling systems for communities through power plant retrofit distribution network. Phase 2. Final report, 1 March 1980-31 January 1984

Description: The potential for district heating was examined in terms of a total (regional) system and two subsystems of overlapping scales. The basis of the economic analysis of district heating was that the utility's electric and gas customers would not be economically burdened by the implementation of district heating, and that any incremental costs due to district heating (e.g. district heating capital and operating costs, replacement electric power, abandonment of unamortized gas mains) would be charge… more

Variable pressure supercritical Rankine cycle for integrated natural gas and power production from the geopressured geothermal resource

Description: A small-scale power plant cycle that utilizes both a variable pressure vaporizer (heater) and a floating pressure (and temperature) air-cooled condenser is described. Further, it defends this choice on the basis of classical thermodynamics and minimum capital cost by supporting these conclusions with actual comparative examples. The application suggested is for the geopressured geothermal resource. The arguments cited in this application apply to any process (petrochemical, nuclear, etc.) invol… more

Costs of using crop residues in direct combustion applications

Description: The economic feasibility of burning crop residues for on-farm grain drying, grain drying at a grain elevator, and electricity generation at a utility are examined. Following dramatic price increases for petroleum during 1979, grain drying is the most economically attractive alternative studied. For on-farm applications, a typical 400-acre grain harvest would consume nearly 5,500 gallons of propane to dry 52,000 bushels of corn from 22% moisture content wet basis (MCWB) to 15% MCWB. Fuel savings… more
