Infrared phonon structure in epitaxial films of Tl sub 2 Ca sub 2 Ba sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 10 at low temperatures

Description: We have used both bolometric and cavity techniques to obtain accurate submillimeter and microwave loss data for epitaxial thin films of Tl{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 10} at low temperatures. These films have {Tc}=121.5 K, are c-axis oriented, contain some volume fraction of the 2:1:2:2 phase, and are characterized by excellent in-plane epitaxy. The absorptivity of these films at 100 cm{sup {minus}1} is a factor of five lower than that obtained by others from a reflectivity measureme… more

Preliminary results of tests of proprietary chemical additives, seeding, and other approaches for the reduction of scale in hypersaline geothermal systems

Description: The LLL field brine-scaling test system and a variety of measurement techniques have been used to test a group of eight proprietary additives from eight different companies, a hydroxyethylcellulose previously found to retard silica precipitation, and geothermal sludge as a seeding agent to reduce scaling. For each additive, scaling rates at both 210 and 125/sup 0/C and on three different materials--mild steel, Teflon, and Hastelloy C-276--were measured using test coupons. Sections of steel pipe… more

Studies of brine chemistry, precipitation of solids, and scale formation at the Salton Sea geothermal field

Description: Factors affecting the precipitation of solids and deposition of scale from the hypersaline brines of the Salton Sea geothermal field - two potential problems in the proposed utilization of these brines for electric power generation - were investigated. The average physical and chemical composition of the fluid from Magmamax No. 1 well was noted and the effects of changes in well flowrate on the chemistry of the brine and the formation of solids were determined. The effects of pH on the process … more

TOF (time-of-flight) measurements of pulsed neutrons for texture analysis of low symmetry materials

Description: The single crystal diffractometer at LANSCE, SCD, provides and ideal capability for the study of preferred orientation in geological samples by time-of flight (TOF) measurement of pulsed neutrons. The 2-d position sensitive neutron detector with the large wave length range allows one to measure the complete distribution of intensities for several poles very quickly. Each histogram covers about {pi}{sup 2}/16 radians of reciprocal space and contains information from all possible poles visible wi… more

Nutrient Budgets of Rock Outcrop Ecosystems and Their Response to Selected Perturbations

Description: The objective was to test the hypothesis that destruction of a biotic compartment of an ecosystem will increase system nutrient loss. Four ecosystems were described and their input-output budgets monitored. The vegetation of one ecosystem was killed with an herbicide. In another, an insecticide eliminated arthropods. The remaining two were controls.

Environmental control implications of generating electric power from coal. 1977 technology status report. Appendix F. Flue gas desulfurization in the United States, 1977. [108 references]

Description: This report details the current status of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) in conventional coal-fired power plants in the U.S. Sepecifications and features are listed for all commercial FGD installations now in operation or being constructed in this country. The FGD operational experience in each plant is summarized and evaluations are made of process, equipment, and operational performance. FGD in other countries, mainly Japan and West Germany, is reviewed for applicability in the U.S. Federal a… more

Volumetric properties of vapor saturated aqueous calcium chloride solutions from 0/sup 0/ to 300/sup 0/C based on a regression of the available literature data

Description: An internally, consistent set of density values is supplied for vapor-saturated, aqueous calcium chloride solutions from 0/sup 0/ to 300/sup 0/C based on currently available experimental data. The tabulated density data were obtained from a computer regression of the P-V-T-X data from 37 references. (MHR)

Loading and Elution Characteristics of Some Natural and Synthetic Zeolites

Description: The cation exchange characteristics of several commercially available zeolites were evaluated, Equilibrium loading characteristics and exchange capacities were determined experimentally in the binary systems cesium-lithium, cesium-- sodium, cesium--potassium, cesium-Tubidium, cesium -- hydrogen, cesium-- ammonium, strontium-- magnesium, strontium-- calcium, strontium-- barium, and strontium-- hydrogen for several zeolites. Exchangeable cation fractions in the equilibrium solutions were varied f… more
