Oxygen reduction at a YSZ interface with cathode materials La{sub 1-x}(Ca or Sr){sub x}MnO{sub 3} or Y{sub 1-x}CaMnO{sub 3}

Description: Impedance spectroscopy combined with an unbonded interface cell (UIC) design, was used to assess oxygen reduction at an yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte interface with several substituted yttrium and lanthanum manganite cathode compositions. By analyzing impedance spectra taken using the UIC, effective length of reaction zone at the solid-gas triple phase boundary can be estimated and used to normalize the oxygen reduction reaction rate for each cell, thus effectively removing effect of i… more

DUSEL Facility Cooling Water Scaling Issues

Description: Precipitation (crystal growth) in supersaturated solutions is governed by both kenetic and thermodynamic processes. This is an important and evolving field of research, especially for the petroleum industry. There are several types of precipitates including sulfate compounds (ie. barium sulfate) and calcium compounds (ie. calcium carbonate). The chemical makeup of the mine water has relatively large concentrations of sulfate as compared to calcium, so we may expect that sulfate type reactions. … more

Irradiation-induced amorphization of Ca[sub 2]La[sub 8](SiO[sub 4])[sub 6]O[sub 2] single crystals

Description: Single crystals of Ca[sub 2]La[sub 8](SiO[sub 4])[sub 6]O[sub 2] were irradiated with 1.5 MeV Xe[sup +], 1.5 MeV Kr[sup +], 1.0 MeV Ar[sup +], and 0.8 MeV Ne[sup +] ions to investigate the effects of recoil-energy spectrum, temperature, and crystallographic orientation on irradiation-induced amorphization. The irradiations were carried out using the HVEM-Tandem Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The structural changes and the ion fluence for complete amorphization in the electron transpar… more

Gasification combined cycle: Carbon dioxide recovery, transport, and disposal

Description: The objective of the project is to develop engineering evaluations of technologies for the capture, use, and disposal of carbon dioxide (CO{sub 2}). This project emphasizes CO{sub 2}-capture technologies combined with integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power systems. Complementary evaluations address CO{sub 2} transportation, CO{sub 2} use, and options for the long-term sequestering of unused CO{sub 2}. Commercially available CO{sub 2}-capture technology is providing a performance an… more

Heterogeneous nucleation of calcium oxalate on native oxide surfaces

Description: The aqueous deposition of calcium oxalate onto colloidal oxides has been studied as a model system for understanding heterogeneous nucleation processes of importance in biomimetic synthesis of ceramic thin films. Calcium oxalate nucleation has been monitored by measuring induction times for nucleation using Constant Composition techniques and by measuring nucleation densities on extended oxide surfaces using an atomic force microscope. Results show that the dependence of calcium oxalate nucleat… more

Stabilization of spent calcium-based sorbent

Description: The overall objective of this project is to obtain experimental data on the reactions of calcium-based sorbents applicable to both air-blown coal gasification systems and second generation fluid bed coal combustion systems (partial gasification). The project is a 40-month effort. A key technical issue for the utilization of calcium sorbents in advanced coal technologies is the subsequent stabilization of the solid wastes (calcium sulfide/ash) produced by such systems.

Enhancing the use of coals by gas reburning-sorbent injection. Quarterly report No. 24, July 1--September 30, 1993

Description: The objective of this project is to evaluate and demonstrate a cost effective emission control technology for acid rain precursors, oxides of nitrogen (NO{sub x}) and sulfur (SO{sub x}), on two coal fired utility boilers in Illinois. The units selected are representative of pre-NSPS design practices: tangential and cyclone fired. The specific objectives are to demonstrate reductions of 60 percent in NO{sub x} and 50 percent in SO{sub x} emissions, by a combination of two developed technologies,… more

Microstructural characterization of Ag-sheathed Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O and Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting tapes by analytical electron microscopy

Description: The microstructures of Tl(1223) and Pb-doped Bi(2223) silver tapes produced by the powder-in-tube (PM) method have been examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The Tl tapes annealed below the melting point exhibited fine grains and a high density of pores while tapes subjected to partial melting prior to solid state annealing were fully dense with large grains. However, these tapes also showed an increase i… more

Hydrothermal reactions of fly ash. [Quarterly] report, April 1, 1993--June 31, 1993

Description: Reactions which occur when fly ash is treated under hydrothermal conditions are being investigated, in order to determine the nature of the phases that form, assess the stabilities of these phases in the ambient environment and, finally, assess whether these phases are capable of sequestering hazardous species. Another reason for undertaken this proposed study is that, depending on the composition of the ash and the presence of selected additives, it may be possible under hydrothermal condition… more

Melt processing of the Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 2]CaCu[sub 2]O[sub y] superconductor in oxygen and argon atmospheres

Description: Solidification and subsequent annealing of Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 2]CaCu[sub 2]O[sub y] (2212) in oxygen and argon atmospheres were investigated in order to identify alternative processing routes for controlling microstructures and superconducting properties. In addition to 2212, several other phases formed on cooling in O[sub 2] and did not disappear upon subsequent annealing. Crystallization in Ar resulted in a divorced eutetic structure of Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 3-x]Ca[sub x]O[sub y] and Cu[sub 2]O/CuO. T… more

Materials compatibility during the chlorination of molten CaCl/sub 2/. CaO salts. [CaCl/sub 2/. CaO salt]

Description: As part of our effort to develop a semicontinuous PuO/sub 2/ reduction process, we are investigating promising materials for containing a 900/sup 0/C molten CaCl/sub 2/ . CaO chlorination reaction. We want the material to contain this reaction and to be reusable. We tested candidate materials in a simulated salt (no plutonium) using anhydrous HCl as the chlorinating agent. Data are presented on the performance of 36 metals and alloys, 9 ceramics, and 3 coatings.
