COMP: a BASIC language nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program

Description: COMP is an interactive nonlinear least squares routine written in BASIC language and used to obtain estimates of parameters in nonlinear functions and to approximate their associated statistical errors. The program uses the linearizing (or Taylor Series) expansion of partial derivatives outlined in Draper and Smith, (1966, pp. 267 to 270). Therefore, partial derivatives must be supplied (as well as the function) by the user for any new models not currently contained in the programs. When a line… more

Simulation of hanging file experiments with CALOR89

Description: This note presents the comparison of CALOR89 simulation with the hanging file'' test measurements conducted at Fermilab during the period of Sep 91--Jan 92. The purpose of this study is to benchmark CALOR89 code against the experimental data to enhance its reliability and predictive power. Seven hanging file configurations were simulated. The measured values of e/{pi} ratio (the ratio of electron to pion signal at the same energy), hadronic and electromagnetic resolutions were compared with the… more

Coarse-node computations with an adaptive node structure

Description: The analysis with COMMIX of liquid metal reactor (LMR) intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) transients that are characterized by low flows, and especially imbalanced low flows, shows that if a coarse-node structure is used the predicted temperatures are significantly different than those given by a fine-node structure. If a fine-node structure is used, for problems that involve a large part of the plant, the computation time becomes excessive. This paper presents an improved version of an adaptive… more

A one-and-a-quarter-dimensional transport code for field-reversed configuration studies: A user's guide for CFRX

Description: A one-and-a-quarter-dimensional transport code, which includes radial as well as some two-dimensional effects for field-reversed configurations, is described. The set of transport equations is transformed to a set of new independent and dependent variables and is solved as a coupled initial-boundary value problem. The code simulation includes both the closed and open field regions. The axial effects incorporated include global axial force balance, axial losses in the open field region, and flux… more

CHILES 2: a finite element computer program that calculates the intensities of linear elastic singularities in isotropic and orthotropic materials

Description: CHILES 2 is a finite-element computer program that calculates the strength of singularities in linear elastic bodies. A generalized quadrilateral finite element that includes a singular point at a corner node is incorporated in the code. The displacement formulation is used and interelement compatibility is maintained so that monotone convergence is preserved. Plane stress, plane strain, and axisymmetric conditions are treated. Isotropic and orthotropic crack tip singularity problems are solved… more

Natural convection phenomena in a nuclear power plant during a postulated TMLB' accident

Description: After the TMI (Three Mile Island) accident, there has been significant interest in analyzing and understanding the phenomena that may occur in a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) accident which may lead to partial or total core meltdown and degradation. Natural convection is one of the important phenomena. In the present paper the results of two numerical simulations of (1) four-loop PWR and (2) three-loop PWR are presented. The simulations were performed with the COMMIX(2) computer code. Our ana… more

Manual for COMSYN: A orbit integration code for the study of beam dynamics in compact synchrotrons

Description: COMSYN is a numerical integration code which is written for the study and design of the compact synchrotrons. An improved 4th-order Runge-Kutta method is used in COMSYN to integrate the exact equations of motion in a rectangular coordinate system. The magnetic field components of the dipole B{sub x}, B{sub y} and B{sub z} can be obtained from either measurement or directly computed data (MAGNUS, TOSCA). A spline interpolation method is then used to get the field value at the particle position. … more

Experimental results of direct containment heating by high-pressure melt ejection into the Surtsey vessel: The DCH-3 and DCH-4 tests

Description: Two experiments, DCH-3 and DCH-4, were performed at the Surtsey test facility to investigate phenomena associated with a high-pressure melt ejection (HPME) reactor accident sequence resulting in direct containment heating (DCH). These experiments were performed using the same experimental apparatus with identical initial conditions, except that the Surtsey test vessel contained air in DCH-3 and argon in DCH-4. Inerting the vessel with argon eliminated chemical reactions between metallic debris … more

Actinide production in /sup 136/Xe bombardments of /sup 249/Cf

Description: The production cross sections for the actinide products from /sup 136/Xe bombardments of /sup 249/Cf at energies 1.02, 1.09, and 1.16 times the Coulomb barrier were determined. Fractions of the individual actinide elements were chemically separated from recoil catcher foils. The production cross sections of the actinide products were determined by measuring the radiations emitted from the nuclides within the chemical fractions. The chemical separation techniques used in this work are described … more

Computational determination of ballistic limits for a simple Whipple bumper shield

Description: A series of numerical simulations has been performed using the multi-dimensional hydrodynamics code CTH to computationally determine a ballistic limit for a Whipple bumper shield. The ballistic limit is generally characterized as a critical diameter such that particle diameters greater than the ballistic limit will generate debris clouds that will penetrate the rear wall and particle diameters less than the ballistic limit will not. The particular shield design used for these analyses is define… more
