Description: In this project we intend to study a novel process concept, i.e, the use of ceramic membranes reactors in upgrading of coal derived liquids. Membrane reactors have been used in a number of catalytic reaction processes in order to overcome the limitations on conversion imposed by thermodynamic equilibrium. Tar sand extraction by steam stimulation and steam drive: measurement of physical properties

Description: The measurement of the following thermophysical properties of Utah tar sands is in progress: thermal conductivity, specific heat relative permeability, and viscosity (of the recovered bitumen). During the report period (October 1, 1978 to November 1, 1979), experimental procedures have been developed and a basic data set has been measured. Additionally, standard core analysis has been performed for four drill sites in the Asphalt Ridge, Utah area.

Asphalt Emulsion Radon Barrier Systems for Uranium Mill Tailings: An Overview of the Technology

Description: Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), under contract to the US Department of Energy (DOE) Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project (UMTRAP) office, has developed an asphalt emulsion cover system to reduce the release of radon from uranium mill tailings. Vaporization, dispersion, and radiant fluxes from LPG spills. Final technical report

Description: Both burning and non-burning spills of LPG (primarily propane) were studied. Vaporization rates for propane spills on soil, concrete, insulating concrete, asphalt, sod, wood, and polymer foams were measured. Thermal conductivity, heat transfer coefficients, and steady state vaporization rates were determined. An sup 15 N NMR method for the characterization of organic sulfur in coal and coal products via iminosulfurane formation

Description: The indirect of organic sulfur by {sup 15}N NMR spectroscopy in the solid state is feasible by facile reactions providing the iminosulfurane structures. Analysis of Reverse Combustion in Tar Sands: A One-Dimensional Model

Description: This paper describes a one-dimensional numerical model which simulates oil recovery from tar sands by reverse combustion. The method of lines is used to solve the nonlinear differential equations describing the flow. The effects of volumetric air flux on the peak temperature, flame velocity, and oil recovery efficiency are reported. The results are compared to the results of relevant experimental studies.

GC/MS characterization of condensable tars in the output stream of a stirred fixed-bed gasifier

Description: The output stream of the stirred fixed-bed gasifier at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center was sampled for total entrained material. A major portion of the entrained material, in addition to particles, is condensable tar that is subsequently removed from the process gas by wet scrubbing. Effects of process severity on physiochemical properties of preasphaltenes

Description: This paper describes the physical character and reactions of preasphaltenes made from a bituminous coal.
