Diversity and richness of benthic insects in three cold desert spring-streams

Description: The authors examined species diversity and richness in three cold desert spring-streams, and showed that species diversity was similar and species richness was lower than in similar-size streams from other and or semi-arid regions. Species diversity in the spring-streams increased with increasing stream size and substratum diversity, but declined as distance increased from the nearest large source. However, this latter relationship is difficult to quantify because the nearest large source was t… more

Multiple measurement of the coupling between benthic carbon fluxes and bioturbation activity during the ``spring bloom``. Progress report 1992

Description: In accordance with the research plan outlined in our original proposal, we began monitoring indicators of plankton production (Chl-a, cell counts) in surface waters of Long Island Sound from the Port Jefferson / Bridgeport Ferry on Dec. 3, 1992. In contrast to past years no dramatic bloom has occurred to date although a significant pattern of increasing chl-a began during the first week of April. We anticipate that the bloom wig be complete by mid to late April. This has been a particularly col… more

Population Dynamics of Macrobenthos in a Regulated Stream 1970-71 and 1978

Description: Stability of the macrobenthic community in a regulated section of the Brazos River, Texas, was evaluated. Physicochemical data and information on spatial distribution of macrobenthos were collected. Populations of two invertebrate species, Isonychia sicca and Neoperla clymene, had been greatly reduced since 1970-71 and I. sicca had been practically eliminated from this section of the Brazos. Three other insect populations, Choroterpes mexicanus, Cheumatopsche campyla and Cheumatopsyche lasia, h… more

Benthic plant communities in acidic Lake Colden, New York: Sphagnum and the algal mat

Description: Lake Colden, in the central Adirondack Mountains of New York State is botanically similar to acidified lakes in Sweden. Acidification of some Swedish lakes has been associated with an expansion of Sphagnum, primarily in shallow, sheltered littoral areas but also to depths of 18m. During a brief botanical survey on 24-25 July 1979, we observed a dense meadow of Sphagnum pylaesii around much of the shoreline of Lake Colden. Plant community composition was determined by a visual estimate of cover … more

Estimation of effects from oil on intertidal populations: experimental perturbations versus natural variation

Description: Two experimental approaches to the investigation of effects of oil on intertidal population processes were evaluated in terms of effort required to quantitatively estimate effects of specific magnitudes. One approach used trays of oil-contaminated sediment placed in the low intertidal zone and subsequently treated in laboratory tanks. Three polychaete and two bivalve species were evaluated. It is concluded that quantitative studies would be feasible using the sediment tray approach but that the… more

Final Report: Risk assessment for produced water discharges to Louisiana open bays

Description: Potential human health and environmental impacts from discharges of produced water to the Gulf of Mexico are of concern to regulators at the State and Federal levels, the public, environmental interest groups and industry. Current and proposed regulations require a zero discharge limit for coastal facilities, based primarily on studies in low energy, poorly flushed environments. However, produced water discharges in coastal Louisiana include a number of open bay sites, where potential human hea… more

Effects of oil on a tundra pond. Final report

Description: A three year study of two spills in tundra ponds at Barrow showed that oil has a highly specific impact on the benthos. Instead of a toxic effect on the entire community, as occurred with the crustacean zooplankton, certain insect species inhabiting the vegetated margins of the ponds were eliminated. Physical entrapment by the floating oil slick or the film coating stems of emergent sedges and grasses appeared to cause this mortality, and species specific behaviors may be responsible for the ob… more

Limnological aspects of acid precipitation

Description: Lakes and streams in parts of Norway, Sweden, Canada, and the United States are being severely impacted by acidic precipitation. Scientists meeting at Sagamore, New York, agreed that this is the most serious limnological problem today. The factor responsible for determining the sensitivity of surface waters to acidification is alkalinity derived by weathering of soils and bedrock in the watershed. Acidification, defined as a reduction in alkalinity, can be quantified if preacidification alkalin… more

In situ monitoring of the effects of water quality on benthic detrital decomposition

Description: Detrital decomposition is an important marine benthic process which contributes to the fertility of seas, particularly in estuarian and coastal waters. The process involves a complex community of microorganisms and small animals which interact with each other in a manner similar to that which occurs in forest litter and in composts. Plastic chambers for measuring decomposition rates of Spartina alterniflora were placed on the bottom of the sea at four sites in the northeast: Towd Point, Southam… more

Laboratory and field studies on the long-term effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on benthic marine invertebrates

Description: Present and future activities associated with petroleum necessitate research on the potential impacts of oil in the Pacific Northwest marine environment. While the results of recent studies on the fate and effects of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) in the marine environment have strengthened our understanding of some aspects of oil pollution, we are not yet to the point at which an accurate prediction of the effects of acute or chronic oil inputs can be made. In order to more clearly define the po… more
