An implementation of a medium resolution minefield model in the Joint Conflict Model

Description: An implementation of a new, flexible, and realistic representation of conventional minefields in the Joint Conflict Model (JCM) is presented. The model includes important aspects of minefield effects on battlefield entities and of breaching devices on minefields. The model is designed at ``medium resolution,`` that is, it is general enough to depict a wide variety of tactical situations accurately; however, it only represents tactically significant aspects of mine warfare, discarding or aggrega… more

Development of a Graphical User Interface to Visualize Surface Observations

Description: Thousands of worldwide observing stations provide meteorological information near the earth's surface as often as once each hour. This surface data may be plotted on geographical maps to provide the meteorologist useful information regarding weather patterns for a region of interest. This report describes the components and applications of a graphical user interface which have been developed to visualize surface observations at any global location and time of interest.

Parallel unconstrained minimization of potential energy in LAMMPS

Description: This report describes a new minimization capability added to LAMMPS V4.0. Minimization of potential energy is used to find molecular conformations that are close to structures found in nature. The new minimization algorithm uses LAMMPS subroutines for calculating energy and force vectors, and follows the LAMMPS partitioning scheme for distributing large data objects on multiprocessor machines. Since gradient-based algorithms cannot tolerate nonsmoothness, a new Coulomb style that smoothly cuts … more

Single identities for lattice theory and for weakly associative lattices

Description: We present a single identity for the variety of all lattices that is much simpler than those previously known to us. We also show that the variety of weakly associative lattices is one-based, and we present a generalized one-based theorem for subvarieties of weakly associative lattices that can be defined with absorption laws. The automated theorem-proving program OTTER was used in substantial way to obtain the results.

The characteristic analysis of a hybrid multifluid turbulent-mix model

Description: A thorough analysis of the characteristics of a multifluid turbulent mix model in the case of one-dimensional two phase flows is presented under various physical circumstances. It has been found that the new hybrid multifluid turbulent mix model has all real characteristics if either real or turbulent viscosity is present. When real viscosity vanishes, the model still has all real characteristics for zero relative motion between fluids. For nonzero relative motions between fluids, the model wil… more

Office of Inspector General audit of alternatives to testing at the Tonopah Test Range

Description: Since the 1950s, the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies have done weapons program testing at the Tonopah Test Range (Tonopah). Beginning the in 1990s, DOE`s testing at Tonopah declined dramatically. This decline was coincident with the signing of various international treaties, the end of the Cold War, and the movement of some types of tests to other ranges. As a result, Tonopah was left with some bomb and work-for-others testing. The objective of this audit was to determin… more

Audit of Department of Energy`s contractor liability insurance costs

Description: Fifty-four of DOE`s major contractors reported expending $44.3 million in liability insurance costs for the last 3 years of operation. Purpose of this audit was to evaluate how DOE implemented its policy to assume the risk of losses for its contractors rather than to insure them commercially. Contractors are required to use self-insurance if combined annual premiums for commercial insurance exceed $10,000. Review of 18 major contractors showed that DOE was not consistently following its policy … more

Naval air carriers, air traffic control, and commercial aviation are some of these kinds of organizations. How did they get that way? What kinds of people staff them? Can we become a high reliability organization? This workshop will look at these questions. When we are done, it will be up to you to determine whether we have … more
