Toxicological benchmarks for screening of potential contaminants of concern for effects on aquatic biota on the Oak Ridge Reservation, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Description: This report presents potential screening benchmarks for protection of aquatic life from contaminants in water. Because there is no guidance for screening benchmarks, a set of alternative benchmarks is presented here. The alternative benchmarks are based on different conceptual approaches to estimating concentrations causing significant effects. For the upper screening benchmark, they are the acute National Ambient Water Quality Criterion (NAWQC) and the acute pesticide advisory value (a concent… more

Metal toxicity evaluation of Savannah River Plant saltstone comparison of EP and TCLP test results

Description: Saltstone is the waste treatment and disposal concept for low-level defense waste at the Savannah River Plant. The waste is a sodium salt solution which has about 230 ..mu..CiL in addition to the hazardous characteristics of corrosivity and metal toxicity (Cr/sup +6/ > 100 ppM). Two EPA test procedures are routinely used at SRP to evaluate metal toxicity of wastes and wasteforms. 1) the Extraction Procedure (EP); and 2) the Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP). The EP test is … more

Biosynthesis of metal-binding polypeptides and their precursors in response to cadmium in Datura innoxia

Description: Metal-tolerant Datura innoxia cells synthesize large amounts of a class of metal-binding polypeptides, poly({gamma}-glutamylcysteinyl) glycines (({gamma}-EC){sub n}G, n=2-5), when exposed to Cd. These polypeptides have a high affinity for Cd (2) and certain other metal ions and are thought to play a role in metal tolerance in higher plants. ({gamma}-EC){sub n}G is biosynthetically derived from glutathione. Therefore, the response of Datura cells to Cd must include an increase in production of g… more

They represent a wide variety of lesions including benign and malignant tumors arising from many tissues. The large surface area, 60 to 90 m{sup 2} in man, represented by the respiratory epithelium and associated thoracic structures are ideal targets for carcinogens carried by inspired air. The topic of discussion in this report is the epidemiology, etiology, and mechanisms of spontan… more

Differeniation of Aroclors in environmental samples using negative ion chemical ionization (NICI) mass spectrometry

Description: Environmental samples suspected of containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and analyzed by EPA Method 8080 frequently contain non-PCB components, such as phthalates, PAH's, or organochlorine pesticides. The presence of these interferences can often obscure the GC/ECD patterns and cause problems in differentiating the Aroclor types by visual inspection. Since Method 8080 requires the identification of Aroclor types in order to trace the sources of PCB occurrences, NICI detection was used to p… more

Estimation of aerial deposition and foliar uptake of xenobiotics: Assessment of current models

Description: This report reviews existing mathematical and/or computer simulation models that estimate xenobiotic deposition to and transport through (both curricular and stomatal) vegetative surfaces. The report evaluates the potential for coupling the best of those models to the existing Uptake, Translocation, Accumulation, and Biodegradation model to be used for future xenobiotic exposure assessments. Here xenobiotic compounds are defined as airborne contaminants, both organic and gaseous pollutants, tha… more
