INEX simulations of the optical performance of the AFEL

Description: The AFEL (Advanced Free-Electron Laser) Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory is presently under construction. The project's goal is to produce a very high-brightness electron beam which will be generated by a photocathode injector and a 20 MeV rf-linac. Surprising patterns of CMOS susceptibility to ESD and implications on long-term reliability

Description: CMOS electrostatic discharge (ESD) failures in a product where, by design, the device input terminals are not accessible to ESD led to this study of device susceptibility and an analysis of the long-term reliability of devices in assemblies from that production line. Some surprising patterns of device susceptibility are established and it is shown that the probability of long-term failure in devices whose electrical characteristics have been degraded by electrostatic discharge is small.

Generation of coherent soft x-rays using a single-pass free-electron laser amplifier

Description: We consider a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier, driven by an rf-linac followed by a damping ring for reduced emittance, for use in generating coherent light in the soft x-ray region. The dependence of the optical gain on electron-beam quality, studied with the three-dimensional FEL simulation code FELEX, is given and related to the expected power of self-amplified spontaneous emission. Development of a low intensity current monitor system

Description: This report documents the development of a current transformer system used to measure pulsed ion beam currents with a wide dynamic intensity range (nA to mA, and factor of 10{sup 6}). Peak beam currents at the LAMPF accelerator typically range from 100 to nA to 40 mA with pulse widths varying from 30 to 1000 {mu}s. Condensation in a two-phase pool

Description: We consider the case of vapor condensation in a liquid pool, when the heat transfer is controlled by heat losses through the walls. The analysis is based on drift flux theory for phase separation in the pool, and determines the two-phase mixture height for the pool. Role of diagnostic testing in identifying and resolving dimensional-stability problems in electroplated laser mirrors

Description: The metal mirrors which are the subject of this discussion are to be used in the Antares inertial fusion laser system. Antares is a high-power (40 TW), high-energy (35 to 40 kJ), pulsed CO/sub 2/ laser system for the investigation of inertial confinement fusion. Development of potential uses for the residue from fluidized bed combustion processes. Quarterly technical progress report, June-August 1980

Description: The following conclusions are recorded: The road base mixes in which quartz silica was substituted for the pulverized coal fly ash gave compressive strengths similar to those using the pulverized coal fly ash. The compressive strengths of road base mixes using recently produced AFB residue were of the same order of magnitude as those obtained in 1977, although the data covers a broad range of test results. Factors affecting visual inspection of thin film network

Description: A study was made of various factors that affect the visual inspection of thin film networks. The effect of various types of reflected illumination, the effect of defect size or shape, the time required for inspection, and the inspection uniformity were evaluated. The use of polarized light is recommended for the visual inspection of thin film networks.

Description: Effects of substrate laser glass on the damage threshold and adhesion of dielectric films has been studied in order to improve the damage threshold. The study is divided into two parts: the first part dealing with four types of laser glass, LSG-91H silicate, LHG-8 phosphate, P-1 phosphate and LHG-10 fluorophosphate; the second part dealing with twenty-six glasses with systematically modified compositions in three glass systems, silicate, phosphate and fluorophosphate.

Description: Corrosion and erosion/corrosion testing of gas turbine materials in the effluent from a pressurized fluidized bed coal combustor continues under the Long Term Materials Test program. Efficient forward conversion in a Raman generator

Description: Stimulated Raman scattering of an XeCl laser at 308 nm in a high pressure H/sub 2/ cell shows anomalously high conversion into first Stokes (S1) when a pumping geometry with a Fresnel number near unity is used. Specifically a quantum efficiency of 88% is obtained into S1. Comparison with a plane-wave model indicates that a theory including diffraction and 4-wave mixing may be necessary to understand the anomalous holdoff of the second Stokes component. 10 references.

Examples of robots and teleoperators at the Savannah River Site

In recent years robots and mobile teleoperators have been used to reduce the radiation exposure of personnel at this site. Investigation of leaks in fiberglass-reinforced pressure vessels by direct observation of hollow fibers in glass cloth

Description: A simple method of visual observation of hollow fibers within fiberglass cloth has been developed. This visualization can aid in determining the contribution these fibers make toward leaks observed in fiberglass-reinforced epoxy resin pressure or vacuum vessels. The Fresh-Bunch' technique in FELs

Description: The 'Fresh Bunch' technique is being proposed as a method of increasing the gain and power of FEL amplifiers in which the length of the optical radiation pulse is shorter than the length of the electron bunch. In multi-stage FEL, electron beam energy spread is increased by the FEL interaction in the early stages. Ultrasonic inspection techniques for two weld closures proposed for RSSF waste storage casks

Description: One method being considered for interim storage of high-level radioactive waste materials is to place these materials in large sealed stainless steel canisters and subsequently store these canisters in a second sealed steel storage cask.
