California solar data manual

Description: Factors that determined the data contents of the manual are presented. Estimates of errors in the data are provided, and the impact of these errors on solar design is discussed. The state is divided into 15 solar zones of roughly similar solar radiation conditions, which are illustrated along with page references to the most relevant solar and climate data. A guide to the data tables and graphs is provided, which are displayed under solar, climate, and sky charts. A guide is given to simplified… more

Impacts of the national energy programme on solar economics

Description: The National Energy Plan (NEP) sets as a goal the use of solar energy in two and a half million homes in 1985. A key provision of the NEP (as well as congressional alternatives) provides for the subsidization of solar equipment. The extent to which these subsidies (income tax credits) might offset the impact of continued energy-price control is examined. Regional prices and availability of conventional energy sources (oil, gas, and electricity) were compiled to obtain a current and consistent s… more

Economic measurement of environment damages

Description: The densities, energy consumption, and economic development of the increasing population exacerbate environmental degradation. Air and water pollution is a major environmental problem affecting life and health, outdoor recreation, household soiling, vegetation, materials, and production. The literature review indicated that numerous studies have assessed the physical and monetary damage to populations at risk from excessive concentrations of major air and water pollutants-sulfur dioxide, total … more

Economics of the attached solar greenhouse for home heating

Description: For several years, passive solar heating has been considered to be very attractive (economically and otherwise) for home heating in the U.S. Unfortunately passive systems are not as easily analyzed as active systems from an engineering and economic performance point of view. This problem is addressed, and an economic assessment of the solar greenhouse is given. Using simple heat balance analysis, a greenhouse performance model is developed for assessing heat available for home space conditionin… more

Assessment of solar options for small power systems applications. Volume IV. Comparative ranking of concepts

Description: A comparative analysis of solar thermal conversion concepts that are potentially suitable for development as small electric power systems (1 to 10 MWe) is presented. Cogeneration and total energy systems were beyond the scope of this study. Seven generic type of collectors, together with associated subsystems for electric power generation, were considered. The collectors can be classified into three categories: (1) two-axis tracking (with compound-curvature reflecting surfaces); (2) one-axis tr… more

Social values and solar energy policy: the policy maker and the advocate

Description: Solar energy policy makers and advocates have significantly different hierarchies (clusters) of values upon which they evaluate the adoption of solar technologies. Content analysis, which examines the frequency with which policy makers identify different types of values, indicates that they hold economic values to be of primary importance. Environmental, social, and national security values are also substantial elements of the policy makers' value clusters associated with solar energy. This fin… more

Solar heating and cooling of buildings: Phase I (non-residential). InterTechnology/Solar Corporation cost/benefit analysis report and supporting opinion survey, commercial buildings. National Solar Demonstration Program, executive summary

Description: A parametric study was performed to provide an estimate of the number of non-residential solar demonstration projects that will be required to start a commercial industry in solar equipment manufacturing, marketing, financing, and installation. An opinion survey was conducted among several experts in the field and results are shown. A techno-economic computer simulation of the solar industry was constructed. This simulation predicts the response of the marketplace to the ERDA program. The compu… more

Can the Sun replace uranium

Description: Two asymptotic worlds, one based on solar energy, the other based on nuclear energy, are compared. The total energy demand in each case is 2,000 quads. Although the Sun can in principal supply this energy, it probably will be very expensive. If the energy were supplied entirely by breeders, the nuclear energy system would pose formidable systems problems--particularly safety and proliferation. It is suggested that in view of these possible difficulties, all options must be kept open.

Price allocation guidelines January 1980: Low-cost solar array project

Description: The price allocation guidelines (PAG) are an integrated set of specific cost targets for several task areas within the Low-cost Solar Array (LSA) Project. PAG is a working tool of LSA Project management designed to provide consistent and meaningful guidelines for costs of polycrystalline silicon material, sheet, cells, encapsulants, and module manufacturing. It is expected that advanced photovoltaic concepts derived from industry and the research community can be developed so that it will be po… more

Commercialization survey for the Department of Energy's Solar Building Demonstration Program

Description: The National Solar Heating and Cooling Program for commercial buildings has been in place for approximately seven years. In the drive to create a viable solar heating and cooling industry in an unprecedented short period of time (5 years), mistakes have been made but many lessons have been learned. The biggest mistake was the belief that the time was ripe for a demonstration program instead of an applications test program. This has led to the following: forcing of the technology before it was f… more

Residential solar home resale analysis

Description: One of the determinants of the market acceptance of solar technologies in the residential housing sector is the value placed upon the solar property at the time of resale. The resale factor is shown to be an important economic parameter when net benefits of the solar design are considered over a typical ownership cycle rather than the life cycle of the system. Although a study of solar resale in Davis, Ca, indicates that those particular homes have been appreciating in value faster than nonsola… more

Solar envelope zoning: application to the city planning process. Los Angeles case study

Description: Solar envelope zoning represents a promising approach to solar access protection. A solar envelope defines the volume within which a building will not shade adjacent lots or buildings. Other solar access protection techniques, such as privately negotiated easements, continue to be tested and implemented but none offer the degree of comprehensiveness evident in this approach. Here, the City of Los Angeles, through the Mayor's Energy Office, the City Planning Department, and the City Attorney's O… more
