System study of an MHD/gas turbine combined-cycle baseload power plant. HTGL report No. 134

Description: The MHD/gas turbine combined-cycle system has been designed specifically for applications where the availability of cooling water is very limited. The base case systems which were studied consisted of an MHD plant with a gas turbine bottoming plant, and required no cooling water. The gas turbine plant uses only air as its working fluid and receives its energy input from the MHD exhaust gases by means of metal tube heat exchangers. In addition to the base case systems, vapor cycle variation syst… more

Pyrite thermochemistry, ash agglomeration, and char fragmentation during pulverized coal combustion

Description: The objective of the present work is to introduce an experimental program that will eventually lead to time-resolved iron ash composition over the technological operating domain. The preceding literature survey suggests two important stipulations on any such experimental program. The first stipulation is that good control must be established over the operating conditions, to accurately quantify their effects. The other is that data must be obtained rapidly, to thoroughly cover the important ope… more

Optical properties of flyash

Description: The chemical composition and size distribution of representative flyashes are being measured by appropriate microanalytical techniques to provide information required. Measurements of the infrared optical constants (i.e., the complex refractive index m = n - ik) of synthetic slags are being made as a function of wavelength and temperature for controlled compositions. Particular attention will be given to the contribution of the Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} content and its valence state. The data is being … more

Optical properties of flyash

Description: During the past quarter we have successfully measured the near normal reflectance of synthetic slags SA00, SA01, and SA05 at 1600[degree]C. The expected similarity of the measurements for slags SA00 and SA01 (which have nearly the same composition) reinforces our conclusion that the experiment is repeatable, although more data will certainly be taken to ensure this. The Kramers-Kronig relations have been applied to the reflectance data to obtain n in the wavelength range 1--13 [mu]m and k in th… more

Optical properties of flyash

Description: The purpose of this task is to validate the whole approach adopted in this program. Specifically, this bench-scale experiment is intended to compare the measured optical/radiative properties of a dispersion of well characterized ash with those calculated on the basis of the known size/composition distribution using the correlation formulae relating the composition and complex refractive index resulting from measurements on bulk samples of synthetic slag. Considerable thought has been given to t… more

Combustion of volatile matter during the initial stages of coal combustion

Description: Both the secondary pyrolysis and combustion of the volatiles from a bituminous coal will be studied. Devolatilization and secondary pyrolysis experiments will be conducted in a novel flow reactor in which secondary pyrolysis of the volatiles occurs after devolatilization is complete. This allows unambiguous measurements of the yields from both processes. Measurements will be made for reactor temperatures from 1500 to 1700 K, and a nominal residence time of 200 msec. These conditions are typical… more

High magnetic field MHD generator program. Final report, July 1, 1976-December 31, 1979

Description: A theoretical and experimental program was undertaken to investigate MHD channel phenomena which are important at high magnetic fields. The areas studied were inhomogeneity effects, boundary layers, Hall field breakdown and electrode configuration and current concentrations. In addition, a program was undertaken to study steady-state combustion disk and linear channels in an existing 6 Tesla magnet of small dimensions. The structure of the inhomogeneities in the Stanford M-2 was characterized a… more

Char particle fragmentation and its effect on unburned carbon during pulverized coal combustion. Quarterly report, October 1, 1993--December 31, 1993

Description: The information reported is for the period October I to December 31, 1993. During this quarter, activities were undertaken in Task 2. Oxygen concentrations were measured in the post-flame region of the entrained flow reactor. The sampling probe was used for the hot gas tests to sample the gas stream. Samples were injected into a gas chromatograph to determine the oxygen concentration. Results agreed with thermoequilibrium calculations that yield equilibrium compositions based on the stoichiomet… more

Optical properties of flyash

Description: In this research program, we have adopted the approach that by measuring fundamental properties (i.e, the complex refractive index, m) of the fly ash which participates in the radiation transfer, we can use well established theoretical principles (Mie theory) to compute the radiative properties of dispersions of fly ash as found in coal combustors. With this approach one can, understand the underlying principles that affect the radiative properties of an ash dispersion and more confidently pred… more

Pyrite thermochemistry, ash agglomeration, and char fragmentation during pulverized coal combustion. Quarterly report, March 15, 1988--June 15, 1988

Description: The primary topics in this program are the size distribution of particulates from pulverized coal firing and the thermochemical transformations of pyrite at typical p. f. firing conditions. In the laboratory, both of these aspects involve representative sampling of particulates from a high temperature combustor, as well as synthetic model fuels with specified pore structure and pyrite loadings. During the period March 15, 1988 through June 15, 1988 we continued to develop the components for rep… more
