Experimental particle physics at the University of Pittsburgh

Description: During the past year Task A completed the HELIOS single and pair electron analyses and found no anomalous production or multiplicity dependence. The HELIOS electron-muon pair analysis continued in its search for lepton physics beyond the expected charm yields. Data taking began at the CMD2 detector at Novosibirsk. Measurements of the U. V. reflectivity and photomultiplier tests for the first Cerenkov counter to be used in the E865 experiment at BNL were carried out, along with the development o… more

Silicon drift chamber studies for the RHIC STAR experiment

Description: The two-hit resolution of a silicon drift chamber is measured using a pulsed Nd:Yag laser and a time digitizer readout. The data is analyzed by forming the covariance matrix in time samples, and transforming to a matrix in amplitude and time variation of each of the two hits. The resolution of the two-hit separation is found to be better than 25 microns with a drift field of 530 V/cm and a separation of more than 500 microns, with the resolution increasing to 50 microns as the separation nears … more

Studies of relativistic heavy ion collisions at the AGS (Experiment 814)

Description: During the past year, the Pittsburgh group has continued to work with the E814 collaboration in carrying out AGS Experiment 814. We present here a brief history of the experiment, followed by a detailed report of the analysis work being pursued at the University of Pittsburgh. As originally proposed, Experiment 814 is a study of both extreme peripheral collisions and the transition from peripheral to central collisions in relativistic heavy ion-nucleus interactions. We are studying relativistic… more

Preliminary Results from the CMD-2 Detector

Description: A new general-purpose detector CMD-2 (calorimetric magnetic detector has started experiments at the upgraded e[sup [plus]]e[sup [minus]] collider VEPP-2M (collider for electron-positron beams) at Novosibirsk. During early runs an integrated luminosity of about 400 inverse nanobarns has been collected in the center of mass energy range 400[endash]1030 MeV.

Experimental particle physics at the University of Pittsburgh. [Dept. of Physics and Astronomy]

Description: During the past year on Task A, the HELIOS work drew to a close with first results from the electron-muon pair studies (no anomalous sources are seen, and the final results and uncertainties are being set). First data from CMD2 will allow improvement of some phi branching ratios, including some improved limits on forbidden decays. The engineering run for E865 is scheduled for June and July of 1993. The principal efforts of Task B, the Fermilab program, have been the completion of the analysis o… more

Experimental particle physics at the University of Pittsburgh. Progress report, 1 November 1993--31 October 1994

Description: Task A involves the study of kaon decays. The overall physics focus of the current work is rare and semi-rare decays of the {phi} and the short-lived kaon, with an emphasis on those aspects needed in preparation for the proposed {Phi}-factory measurements of CPT violation. Another aspect of the rare kaon decay work is E865 at BNL, a search for K{sup +} yields {pi}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}e{sup {minus}}, a lepton number violating process. Pittsburgh`s E865 responsibilities are the design and constructi… more

The physics of pattern formation at liquid interfaces. Progress report, June 1, 1991--May 31, 1992

Description: During the past year we have submitted six papers for publication, three related to the dynamics of macroscopic interfaces, and ultimately all related to solidification, and three related to the internal structure of disorderly materials, with possible applications to the processing of composite materials. In addition to completing all these projects during the past year, we have begun two new projects, one on pattern formation and one on aggregation within a composite system. A brief descripti… more

Development of a data base on radon in US homes and applications. Final technical report

Description: This research led to the development of the compilation of data on radon in homes which is included in this document. This research also contributed to the development of two papers analyzing the results. These are a case control study test and tests of the liner no-threshold theory for lung cancer induced by exposure to radon in residential buildings.

Studies of relativistic heavy ion collisions at the AGS (E814/E877). Annual progress report, 1 May 1992--30 April 1993

Description: Efforts have continued in the area of peripheral and central collisions of relativistic heavy ions. In the area of peripheral collisions, the analysis of the 1n and 2p decay channels has been completed. In the area of central collisions, the first measurement of the E{sub T} distributions in Au + Au collisions, through the use of the participant calorimeter, was completed, and the results were compared with those obtained in collisions with Si projectiles. In addition, a thorough study of two-p… more

Silicon drift chamber studies for possible use at RHIC. Final report, March 1, 1989--April 30, 1993

Description: This is the final report for the DOE project ``Silicon Drift-Chamber studies for Possible use at RHIC`` carried out at the University of Pittsburgh by T. J. Humanic. This study was carried out during the period March 1989--April 1993 under DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-89ER40503. The termination of this grant was caused by the movement of the principal investigator from the University of Pittsburgh to Ohio State University, where this work is continuing under a different grant. During this period we in… more

Experimental particle physics at the University of Pittsburgh. Progress report, November 1, 1995--October 31, 1996

Description: This report covers the progress on two different tasks, Task A and Task B. Task A focuses on rare and semi-rare decays of {phi} and of the short-lived kaon with emphasis on those aspects needed in preparation for the proposed {Phi}-Factory measurements of CPT violation and {epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon} from the CP-violating decays of the K{sub L}K{sub S} final state. The second aspect of the kaon decay work is participation in the so-called rare kaon decay experiments, E865, at BNL. The major goal… more
