SOLERAS - Solar Controlled Environment Agriculture Project. Final report, Volume 7. Science Applications, Incorporated field test facility preliminary design

Description: This report contains the preliminary design of an SCEAS Engineering Test Facility (ETF). The ETF is a 3600 m/sup 2/ fluid roof greenhouse with an inflated plastic film roof to maintain a clean environment for the fluid roof and to protect the inner glazing from hail and other small missiles. The objective of the design was the faithful scaling of the commercial facility to ensure that the ETF results could be extrapolated to a commercial facility of any size. Therefore, all major features, incl… more

SOLERAS - Solar Controlled Environment Agriculture Project. Final report, Volume 5. Science Applications, Incorporated system requirements definition

Description: This report sets forth the system requirements for a Solar Controlled-Environment Agriculture System (SCEAS) Project. In the report a conceptual baseline system description for an engineering test facility is given. This baseline system employs a fluid roof/roof filter in combination with a large storage tank and a ground water heat exchanger in order to provide cooling and heating as needed. Desalination is accomplished by pretreatment followed by reverse osmosis. Energy is provided by means o… more

Preparation of a computer-compatible data base on an operating total energy system. Final report. [Indian Creek Village, Overland Park, Johnson Co. , Kansas]

Description: This report documents the development of a computerized data base on the long-term performance of the Indian Creek Total Energy System, and it is intended to be a user's manual for the data base and the accompanying energy-balance computer program. The data base may be used as a standard of comparison for the performance predicted by energy-system-simulation software. The TES became operational in 1972 to meet the projected electrical, space conditioning, and domestic hot water needs for t… more

SOLERAS - Solar Controlled Environment Agriculture Project. Final report, Volume 1. Project summary

Description: A summary of the Solar Controlled Environment Agriculture Project is presented. The design of the greenhouses include transparent double pane glass roof with channels for fluid between the panes, inner pane tinted and double pane extruded acrylic aluminized mylar shade and diffuser. Solar energy technologies provide power for water desalination, for pumping irrigation water, and for cooling and heating the controlled environment space so that crops can grow in arid lands. The project is a joint… more

Economic and engineering analysis of a selected full-scale trommel screen operation

Description: The trommel screen located at the Baltimore County municipal solid waste processing plant operated by Teledyne National was evaluated for a 1-year period. This trommel is used to remove noncombustibles from refuse derived fuel (RDF) and thereby reduce ash content and increase heating value of the RDF. The trommel is 8 m in length, 3.7 m in diameter, has 32-mm holes, and can be operated at 6 to 12 rpm. Economic operating and maintenance data were collected for the period November 1980 through Oc… more

Continuation of systems study of fuels from grasses and grains: Phase 2 and Phase 3. Final report

Description: Results are presented of an investigation of biomass-derived fuels from grasses and grains. A region-by-region analysis of biomass production, with both the present (near-term) and the future (mid-term) being considered is presented. The overall approach for analysis of the near-term involved least cost analysis of production, transportation, and energy conversion. The mid-term analyses were structured around the assumed implementation of modified crop production systems in which land was more … more

Investigation of mechanisms of ash deposit formation from low-rank coal combustion: Final report

Description: This project was undertaken to determine the chemical behavior of alkali metal and other species implicated in the ash fouling which can occur during the combustion of low rank coals. The coal combustion was studied in unaugmented premixed pulverized coal flames. Vapor species were measured by molecular beam mass spectrometry. Temperatures were also measured, and time-resolved coal/ash particulate samples were collected and analyzed. A major part of the research on this project was devoted to: … more

Evaluation of H/sub 2/S control technology for geothermal energy sources

Description: This study was conducted to identify processes that are most applicable for control of H/sub 2/S from geothermal sources. Both vapor-dominated and liquid-dominated sources were considered within the electric power generation category. The source characteristics, H/sub 2/S control requirements, and applicable technologies are discussed for the two geothermal sources. An evaluation of the applicable control technology indicates that there are three major approaches for H/sub 2/S removal. These ar… more
